HEATING PRIORITY
PROVIDES POOL PUMP HARMONY
A step-by-step guide to configuring a variable speed pump to run efficiently with a pool heat pump.
VS2 Heating Priority Provides Pool Pump Harmony
NEW TECHNOLOGIES BRING NEW EFFICIENCIES.
But they must work in harmony…
We will explain why and how.
Why choose a variable-speed pump (VS pump) ?
The filtration pump allows water to circulate through the pool’s filter.
The more often and regularly this happens, the better the water quality will
be.
The variable-speed pump operates continuously for long periods at a low flow
rate. Adjusting its speed according to the pool’s needs in terms of
temperature, filtration, and usage. It results in:
+ Improved water quality
+ Silent operation
+ Energy consumption reduced by approximately 70%
Why choose a heat pump ?
The heat pump allows your clients to enjoy their pools for longer periods,
more frequently, while controlling its temperature…all while consuming minimal
energy.
Indeed, it extracts heat from the outdoor air transfers it to the pool water
circulating through its systems… thanks to the filtration pump.
When the temperature drops (or rises), the heat pump needs to communicate with
the filtration pump to request a water flow.
The 2 systems are therefore linked to each other…
This instruction is simple for a single-speed pump, typically either on or
off.
It becomes more complex with a variable-speed pump that is always running.
Clever but not complicated.
How? Ensure that the heat pump sets the tone through heating priority
Controlling a variable-speed pump from a heat pump requires a setting called
“heating priority”. It is a simple connection that allows the heat pump to
receive the necessary water flow from the variable-speed pump while ensuring
that the variable-speed pump operates efficiently in the background when
heating is not activated.
This requires wiring the heat pump and the variable-speed pump together. A
relay is installed that allows the heat pump to regulate the variable-speed
pump and ensure that the pool will be heated.
So, before we begin
Make sure to provide a « dry contact”: normally open relay or contactor with a
230V AC coil.
RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR ELECTROCUTION.
This connection must be installed by a licensed or certified electrician or a
qualified service professional in accordance with the National Electrical Code
and all applicable local codes and ordinances. Improper installation will
create an electrical hazard which could result in death or serious injury to
users, installers, or others due to electrical shock, and may also cause
damage to property. Always disconnect power to the pumps at the circuit
breaker before commencing work. Failure to do so could result in death or
serious injury to service people, pool users or others due to electric shock
and/or property damage. Read all manuals for both devices before attempting
the connection.
HEATING PRIORITY, A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE.
-
Turn off the power to the VS pool pump and pool heat pump.
-
Add the ‘dry contact’ (normally open relay or connector, with a 230V AC coil) to the main electrical box.
-
Electrical connections. Connect the coil of the dry contact (A1 and A2) to the P1 and P2 terminals of the heat pump. See Figure 1.
-
Connect the ‘V-Out’ from the VS pump’s digital inputs to the ‘common’ terminal.
Connect the Speed 1 (or other) to the “N/O” (normally open) terminal of the dry contact.
Depending on VS pump model see Figure 2 (IntelliFlo3) or Figure 3 (VS2 pumps) Note : for Pentair VS2 pumps, the communication cable P/N R356324Z is required (optional). -
Turn the power back on to the heat pump and the VS pool pump.
-
For users of Pentair VS2 pumps, simply set Speed 1 to the desired speed, referring to user manual if needed.
For users of the IntelliFlo3 VSF pump, together with the Pentair Home App, enter the Home App, go to ‘Advanced Settings’ and select ‘External Control Programs’ and select the desired speed. See Figure 4 -
Next, set the heat pump to the desired temperature to Heating Priority mode, referring to heat pump manual if required.
-
With Heating Priority activated:
• When heating is required, the heat pump will force the Pentair VS pump to run to maintain the pool water temperature, even though it may be outside its filtration hours. The Speed 1 program will override any scheduled programs, automation or manual input.
• When heating is not required, the Pentair VS pump will run as per its programmed schedule. The Pentair VS pump will now run at Speed 1 whenever the heat pump turns on.

Optimize the efficiency of a smart & sustainable pool with **the
Pentair Speedeo Connect**
The Pentair Speedeo Connect is the first step towards pool automation as well
as its equipment.
It provides :
+ Control of the variable-speed pump by adjusting filtration according to the
water temperature
+ Control of the heat pump by programming its remote activation
+ Control of other equipment, such as lighting
When connected, it allows real-time and remote monitoring of the water and air
temperature. It enables your clients to check whether all the equipment is
functioning correctly and if the cover is closed from their couch or
workplace…
Pool equipment automation allows for a more efficient use and improves their
durability.
