Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair
Driveshaft Removal
Special Tools Required
- Ball joint remover, 28 mm 07MAC-SL00200
- Ball joint thread protector, 12 mm 07MF-SDM100

Loosen the wheel nuts slightly.

Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.

Remove the wheel nuts and front wheels.
-
Lift up the locking tab (A) on the spindle nut (B), then remove the nut.

Drain the transmission fluid. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer:
Manual transmission
Automatic transmission -
Remove the self-locking nut (A), 12 mm flange bolt (B), and 10 mm flange bolt (C), then remove the damper fork (D).

Remove the cotter pin (A) from the lower arm ball joint castle nut (B), and remove the nut.
NOTE:
To avoid damaging the ball joint, install the ball joint thread protector onto the threads of the ball joint.
Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover. -
Separate the ball joint from the lower arm (C) with the special tool.

Pull the knuckle outward, and remove the outboard joint from the front wheel hub using a plastic hammer.

Left driveshaft: Pry the inboard joint (A) from the differential case with a prybar. Right driveshaft: Drive the inboard joint (A) off of the intermediate shaft with a drift and hammer. Remove the driveshaft as an assembly. Do not pull on the driveshaft (B), because the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the driveshaft straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.
