Installing the Phono Preamp Expansion Module or Balanced Analog Input Expansion Module in your Emotiva RMC-1

  • NOTE
Any combination of one or two Phono Preamp Expansion Modules and or Balanced Analog Input Expansion Modules may be installed in Expansion Slot #1 and Expansion Slot #2. Expansion Slot #3 is reserved for other types of expansion modules.

  • NOTE
We suggest that you install the latest firmware on your RMC-1 before installing expansion modules. While failing to do so will not cause any damage, the expansion modules may not operate properly if your RMC-1 does not have current firmware installed.

  • NOTE
Once your new expansion modules are installed they will appear as new inputs in the Setup Menu on your RMC-1 and may be configured or renamed like your other inputs. You will NOT be required to perform a Factory Reset after installing the expansion modules and your other existing configuration settings will NOT be affected.

  • WARNING !
Both the circuitry inside your RMC-1 and your new expansion modules include static sensitive parts. Place the included antistatic wrist strap on your wrist, and connect the clip to a suitable ground point, before touching any parts inside your RMC-1, or unpacking and handling your new expansion modules.

HARDWARE UPDATE

NOTE: While either type of expansion module may be installed in either Expansion Slot #1 or Expansion Slot #2, if you are installing a single module we suggest using Expansion Slot #1, because it is easier to access.
NOTE: You may find it easier to access Expansion Slot #2 if you first remove the HDMI board above it. While this is not required, if you choose to do so you will find a link to the instructions for removing and replacing the HDMI board on the Expansion Module Product Page.
NOTE: You will need to access the top, sides, and back of your RMC-1 in order to install the expansion modules. We also STRONGLY SUGGEST you disconnect all inputs and outputs to allow easy access to the rear panel.

MODULE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

  • 1 Switch off the power to your RMC-1 using the rear panel power switch.

  • 2 Remove (8) Philips Head screws securing the top cover (3 on each side; 2 on the rear panel at the top edge).

Note: Several different sizes and types of screws are used in the RMC-1. When you remove the screws, be sure to keep track of which screws are removed from each location so you can replace the correct screws in their proper locations later.fig

  • 3. Remove the top cover by lifting up from the rear edge, then pulling the cover towards the rear of the unit to unhook the front edge of the cover from the notch in the front panel.fig

  • BEFORE PROCEEDING – PLEASE PUT ON THE ANTI-STATIC WRIST STRAP PROVIDED WITH YOUR UPGRADE KIT

    • Put the bracelet from the wrist strap on either wrist.
    • Attach the clip from the wrist strap to one of the metal support brackets shown below.
    • Keep wrist strap on while handling circuit boards or working inside the RMC-1.fig
  • 4. Carefully remove the four screws holding the Expansion Slot cover in place. The cover is secured to the INSIDE of the rear panel so you will have to “catch it” to prevent it from dropping inside the unit. Set aside the cover; the screws will be used to install the expansion module.fig

  • 5. Unpack the expansion module and its interconnect cable from its antistatic packing bag and inspect them for damage. (Notify Emotiva immediately if your module or cable shows signs of damage.)

  • 6. Connect one end of the cable to the connector on the rear of the expansion module (shown below). The two ends of the cable are the same and either end may be inserted into the connector. The connector itself is keyed to prevent you from inserting it into the board the wrong way. Be sure to fully insert the connector so that it snaps securely into place.fig

  • 7. Position the expansion module in the Expansion Slot. THE EXPANSION MODULE SHOULD BE POSITIONED ON THE INSIDE OF THE REAR PANEL OF THE RMC-1.fig

  • 8. While holding the expansion module in position, carefully insert one or two screws loosely to hold it in place, then insert the remaining screws loosely. Once all four screws are inserted gently tighten all four screws – BEING CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH ANY WIRES BETWEEN THE EXPANSION MODULE AND THE CHASSIS.fig

  • 9. Now that the expansion module has been attached to

the rear panel of the RMC-1 we need to attach the internal connecting cable. Connect the cable to the connector that is located closest to the expansion module you just installed. The connector itself is keyed to prevent you from inserting it the wrong way. Be sure to fully insert the connector so that it snaps securely into place. (You may attach the connecting cable before securing the module if you prefer.)

  • (This picture shows an expansion module installed in Expansion Slot #1 with the cable connected.)fig

  • IF THE EXPANSION MODULE YOU INSTALLED WAS A BALANCED ANALOG INPUT EXPANSION MODULE THEN THE HARDWARE INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.
Carefully check your work, disconnect your antistatic wrist strap, replace the top cover on your RMC-1, and use your new inputs.

  • IF THE EXPANSION MODULE YOU INSTALLED WAS A PHONO PREAMP EXPANSION MODULE THEN WE HAVE ONE MORE STEP TO DO.

  • 10. In addition to the signal cable each Phono Preamp Input Module has a separate ground connection which needs to be connected to a ground point on the power supply board. For each input module we want to use the ground point that is located closest to it.

  • 11. Loosen the ground screw, slide the spade on the end of the ground wire under it, and firmly tighten the screw. Make sure to position the wire so that it doesn’t interfere with any other connectors. IF YOU ARE CONNECTING THE GROUND WIRE FROM EXPANSION SLOT #1 BE SURE TO POSITION THE SPADE SO THAT IT DOES NOT DAMAGE THE SMALL CAPACITOR DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THE SCREW.

  • (This picture shows the ground connected for a Phono Preamp Expansion Module installed in Expansion Slot #1.)
NOTE THE TINY CHIP CAPACITOR AT THE TIP OF THE RED ARROW IN THE PICTURE. THE SPADE MAY GENTLY TOUCH THIS BUT MUST NOT SIT ON TOP OF IT.fig

  • THE HARDWARE INSTALLATION NOW IS COMPLETE.

    • Carefully check your work, disconnect your antistatic wrist strap, replace the top cover on your RMC-1, and use your new phono input.
    • REMEMBER TO SET THE SWITCH ON THE PHONO PREAMP MODULE TO THE APPROPRIATE CARTRIDGE TYPE (MM or MC). IF YOU HAVE A MOVING COIL CARTRIDGE YOU SHOULD ALSO SET THE LOAD IMPEDANCE CONFIGURATION SWITCHES TO THE VALUE SPECIFIED BY YOUR CARTRIDGE MANUFACTURER.
    • YOUR NEW INPUTS WILL NOW APPEAR ON THE LIST OF INPUTS ON THE SETUP MENU AND MAY BE SELECTED AND CONFIGURED JUST LIKE YOUR OTHER INPUTS. THE NAMES OF EACH NEW INPUT WILL VARY SLIGHTLY DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF EXPANSION MODULE AND THE EXPANSION SLOT IN WHICH IT IS INSTALLED. YOU MAY RENAME THEM IN THE SETUP MENU IF YOU WISH TO.
