General safety instructions
These safety instructions are essential for using and servicing your Grin. They must therefore be followed strictly when using the equipment.

Caution!
Visually inspect the equipment before use to ensure that the blade, the mounting bolts and the mowing unit are not worn or damaged. Replace any damaged or worn components and make sure everything is still balanced.

Caution!
Before mowing, remove any stones, wood, glass and/or other foreign objects, which could damage the blade and/or injure the user, from the lawn.

Use

  • Wear high-resistant shoes. NEVER mow the grass barefoot or wearing sandals or other open shoes: the blade rotates at high speed and could lift and project foreign objects (e.g. stones, branches, etc.).
  • Always wear long trousers and suitable clothing to protect your legs.

Caution!

Never switch your Grin on:

  • If you are not in the correct operating position, behind the handlebar, or with the handlebar not properly fixed. Only like this can you move the equipment safely and maintain the correct distance from the blades.
  • If the Grin is tilted upright, in an unstable position and/or the blade is not free to rotate.
  • If the Grin shows visible signs of damage and/or the safety devices are defective or missing.
  • If there are people or animals within a range of about 5 m.
  • If the light conditions do not allow it to be used safely.

Caution!

  • Only push or pull your Grin with the handlebar at mowing speed. Be careful not to trip when pulling the equipment. Walk, do not run, when mowing. Use the utmost caution when changing direction or pulling the lawn mower towards you.
  • For greater safety, mow longitudinally across slopes. DO NOT use your Grin on slopes greater than 20° (30° only for SPM model). Always make sure the lawn mower is steadily supported and use extreme care when changing direction on slopes.
  • In the event of lengthy use of the lawn mower, the transmitted vibrations to the operator could create circulation problems in the fingers. Immediately stop using the lawn mower if you get a tingling sensation in your fingers.
  • If the blade jams, remove the obstruction ONLY with the engine off.
  • Never transport the machine with the engine running!

Caution!

  • Store Grin indoors, only after the engine has cooled down.
  • Keep the engine air intake clean and free from obstructions.
  • In the event of a malfunction or before cleaning, always wait until the engine has cooled down.

Caution!
ALWAYS and IMMEDIATELY switch the engine off:

  • When you’re less concentrated or you are distracted by other people, animals, objects or events.
  • When the blade rotates irregularly (e.g. vibrations, abnormal movements and/or noises), after an interruption or blockage.
  • When the engine or any other part of the lawn mower sounds abnormal
  • When the safety provisions do not work properly.

It is advisable to use the lawn mower as stipulated by the council regulations (usually from Monday to Saturday from 7:00 am to 12:00pm and from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm). Enquire about other restrictions related to professional use.

Additional instructions for HM/PM/SPM models:

Caution!

  • In the event of petrol spills, do not try to start the engine, but carefully clean the lawn mower and move it away from the area where the spill occurred, and avoid creating any sources of ignition until the air is clear of petrol vapours.
  • To reduce the risk of fire, keep the engine, exhaust and the petrol storage area clear from grass, leaves or excessive grease.

Caution!

  • After refuelling, always make sure the petrol tank cap is closed properly.
  • Never start your Grin indoors or standing in front of the exhaust pipe; combustion in the engine releases carbon monoxide, which is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas.

Caution!
Replace defective exhausts.

All models with an internal combustion engine, produce acoustic pressure in the operator’s ear exceeding 80 dBA and therefore the use of sound protectors (earphones or plugs) is recommended.

Additional instructions for BM models:

Caution!

  • Never start the equipment in the rain or in a humid environment.
  • When the machine is switched off, always remove the battery before handling.

Note:
Model BM46-82V also has a safety key inside the battery compartment (Fig.1_W). The machine will not start without this key. Always remove the key if the machine is left unattended, if it has stopped due to problems, or for any kind of maintenance.

Additional instructions for EM models:

Caution!

  • Make sure the mains voltage and frequency comply with the data on the rating plate.
  • Plug the equipment into a socket with an FI differential switch with a ≤ 30mA residual current device.
  • Avoid physical contact with parts afixed to the ground (e.g. metal fences, poles, etc.)
  • Only use approved H05VV-F or H05RN-F extension cords with a maximum length of 75 m that are suitable for outdoor use. They must have a minimum section of 1.5 mm². Before use, completely unroll the cable and make sure the insulation is not damaged.
  • Only use the extension cord strain relief provision on the equipment.
  • Keep the extension cord away from the blade and place it so that it cannot get entangled. The extension cord must remain behind the operator of the lawn mower.
  • Never pull the extension cord to unplug it. Keep the cord away from oil and sharp objects.
  • Always unplug the cord if there are signs of damage to the lawn mower or to the power cord. If an extension cord is damaged, it must always be replaced, not patched up.
  • Never start the equipment in the rain or in a humid environment.
  • Always unplug the power cord when switching the machine off.

Storage
Storage is also an important part of keeping your Grin in the best possible condition.

Temporary storage
Up to 4 weeks is considered as temporary storage.

  • For combustion engine models (HM/PM/SPM), the fuel can be left in the tank.
  • Let the engine cool down outdoors before storing the Grin.
  • Clean the equipment before putting it away to prevent caking of grass residue, which is pesky to remove.
  • Shelter the lawn mower.

Note:
Store the batteries as indicated in the engine’s manual (BM46-82V and Instart models).

Caution!
Do not store the lawn mower in sunlight or at home because petrol vapours may leak out.

Long-term storage
For long periods, for example during the winter.

  • For combustion engine models (HM/PM/SPM), completely empty the fuel tank outdoors and store the petrol in a suitable container.
  • Follow the maintenance instructions below and in the engine’s user manual:
    1. Unscrew the spark plug (Fig.1_T).
    2. Spray anti-rust protection or anti-rust lubricant into the cylinder: pull the starter halfway out to move the piston and uniformly distribute the protection.
    3. Screw the spark plug back in.
    4. Lubricate the worn metal parts with a thin layer of grease or treat them with protective oil.
    5. Lightly grease the blade.
    6. Shelter the lawn mower from humidity and cover it to protect it from dust.

For the BM and EM models, follow the above operations from point IV.

Note:
To correctly store the batteries, carefully read the information provided in the engine’s manual (BM46-82V and Instart models).

Disposal
Observe the environmental requirements, rules and regulations on waste disposal and recycling.

  • Plastic: Separate based on recycling processes.
  • Metal: Scrap metal.
  • Electrical cables: Electrical scrap or non-ferrous scrap metal.
  • Used oil: Deliver to the petrol stations.

Caution!
Pay attention when disposing of batteries:

  • Never set fire or incinerate used or discarded batteries as they could explode. Burning batteries releases toxic materials and fumes.

It is likely that there is a small residual electrical charge in used or discarded batteries, so they should be handled with caution. Dispose of batteries in compliance with federal, state and local laws.

Note:
To correctly dispose of the batteries, carefully read the information given in the engine’s manual (BM46-82V and Instart models).

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance is very important to keep your Grin in good condition and to maintain its performance.

Clean the lawn mower after every use:

  • remove any residues by hand
  • clean the mowing deck with water and a brush

Carefully follow the maintenance operations as indicated in the table at the end of this chapter.

Caution!
Wait until the engine has cooled down before performing any kind of operation.

Caution!
Perform maintenance ALWAYS and ONLY with the engine off and the spark plug/battery disconnected, depending on the model. Be careful with the blade as it is very sharp.

Do not clean using high-pressure devices or water jets!
Manually remove mowing residues exclusively with a brush.

For maintenance operations that require the machine to be tilted upright:

  1. Place the lawn mower on a flat stable surface.
  2. Put the height adjustment lever on position 4. Move the lever as explained in chapter “4.2 Adjusting the mowing height”.
  3. Unlock the handlebar release levers (Fig.1_C).

  5. Tilt the lawnmower upwards onto its rear wheels (Fig.9.2)

GRIN-EM37-Electric-Lawnmower-fig- \(9\)

Note:
Models with combustion engines that are NOT equipped with a Mow’N’Stow engine (see technical data sheet) can be tilted upright for the shortest time possible. Always check the petrol level before lifting the lawn mower. For these models, the tank must not be completely full when the lawn mower is tilted to prevent any petrol leaks. When the maintenance has been completed, wait for a few minutes before starting the machine.

Models equipped with a Mow’N’Stow engine, battery-powered ones and electrical ones can be tilted upright for long periods without a problem.

Caution!
For safety reasons it is strictly forbidden to modificate and/or temporarily repair and/or tune-up your GRIN. Worn or damaged parts must be replaced immediately. ONLY use original spare parts.
