Congratulations on your new hörbert!
You now own a high-quality audio player made of wood, which is much more than
an MP3 player. Its simple operation makes it ideal for children and will
accompany them for a long time. Listening to hörbert is very versatile:
listening to content from the memory card, streaming via Bluetooth to up to
two headphones at the same time, streaming from the cell phone to hörbert as a
speaker, and listening to Internet radio via WLAN, record voice recordings
with the optional microphone. And the hit: all
sources that hörbert can play, it can also record and play back later via its
colorful buttons. Maximum flexibility according to the motto: hörbert – listen
as you like!

at service@hoerbert.com
The entire hörbert team wishes you much pleasure with your
hörbert!
hörbert briefly explained
hörbert is a player for everything your child likes to listen to. The
operation is optimally designed for children by the clear functions of the
various controls. The colorful buttons allow your child to easily remember
which music or audio plays are where. You will be amazed at how quickly your
child will safely navigate through their collection of music and stories.
hörbert’s content is stored on a memory card to which an adult uploads music
and audio plays via computer using the free hörbert software. The content can
be loaded from the computer or from audio CDs onto hörbert’s memory card.
The playing time depends strongly on which functions you use. Bluetooth and
WLAN require more power than playing from the memory card.
The included memory card holds with a size of 4 GB a repertoire of about 50
hours when using mp3 files. The hörbert software can store content on
hörbert’s memory
card in this space-saving format.
Inside hörbert there are no moving parts, so hörbert is less sensitive than
e.g. portable CD players.
The compact design means your child always has their entire music collection
at their fingertips.
Getting started
Insert memory card
Place hörbert in front of you with the colored keys facing down.
hörbert Bedienungsanleitung deutsch
To open hörbert, unscrew the backscrew completely counterclockwise. A suitable
tool for this is, for example, a coin. Now slide the back panel out downwards.
Make sure
that it does not slip out unintentionally. Remove the supplied memory card
from the glassine bag if you have ordered a memory card for it, or use your
own SDHC card between 4 and 512 GB and insert it into the SD card slot
provided inside hörbert. Inserting or changing memory cards may only be done
by an adult!
Insert or change batteries
Switch off hörbert before opening the rear panel! Batteries may only be
inserted or changed by an adult! Place hörbert in front of you with the
colored keys facing down.
To open hörbert, turn the back panel screw
counterclockwise all the way out. A suitable tool for this is e.g. a coin. Now
slide the back panel out downwards. Make sure that it does not slip out
unintentionally.
To remove the batteries, pull them vertically upwards out of the battery clips
(7). The batteries fit very tightly so that they cannot fall out during play.
Tip: As an aid, thread a string underneath a battery. This makes it easy to
pull it up without damaging the circuit board, the battery or the battery
clips. Now insert four AA
batteries (1.5 V) or, even better, rechargeable batteries (1.2 or 1.5 V) into
the battery clips. Make sure that the + and – poles are in the correct
position.
Tip: The batteries audibly click into place. Now push the back panel back in
and tighten the back panel screw clockwise. For the last turns, you can again
use a coin as an aid.
Safety note: Do not use batteries where the casing is damaged (e.g. scratched
open). This can lead to short circuits and damage to the batteries and the
device.
Always use four batteries of the same type from the same pack.
Switch on and off
Switch hörbert on by pressing the top of the rotary knob (1) once. hörbert
will continue to play from the last passage heard after a short
acknowledgement tone. Switch hörbert off again after use by pressing the
rotary knob (1) again. By default, hörbert does not switch off by itself, but
continuously repeats the tracks behind the last pressed
selection button. It is possible to set an automatic switch-off time (sleep
timer). See the SET functions from page 3.
Set volume
If you turn the rotary knob (1) counterclockwise, hörbert becomes quieter. If
you turn the rotary knob (1) clockwise, hörbert will play louder. When the
maximum volume is reached, hörbert no longer gets louder. hörbert offers an
additional volume limitation (Piano/Forte). See the SET functions starting on
page 3.
Navigation through the contents
The content on hörbert is organized in so-called “playlists”. Behind each of
nine colored buttons (2) is a playlist, e.g. a complete music CD or a radio
play.
To navigate through the music and radio plays on hörbert, press one of the
colored selection buttons (2). Now hörbert plays the first track of the
playlist that was stored behind this button.
The next time you press the same button, hörbert jumps to the second title of
the playlist that was stored behind this button, and so on. After the last
title hörbert jumps back to the first title of the playlist behind this key.
Fast forward and rewind
As long as the fast forward button (3) is pressed, hörbert plays fast forward.
You can listen along to find a specific part of a title. Pressing the skip
back button (4) takes you back to the beginning of the currently playing
title. If you then press the return key again twice in quick succession, you
go to the previous track in the playlist, and so on. This can be repeated
until you reach the first title of this playlist..
Handling of the memory card
The memory card is inserted in the card holder (9).
Above it, there is a printed card symbol that shows you the direction in which
the card must be pulled out of the card holder. The memory card has a recess
on its upper edge,
which you can use to pull it out with your thumbnail. Other cards can also be
pushed out with the thumb and light pressure from above on the visible card
surface.
Please handle the card and the card holder with care, these parts are very
delicate compared to the rest.
To insert the memory card, please also follow the printed card symbol above
the card holder (9). Place the card on the symbol and then carefully push it
down into the card
holder (9) until it can be seen a little in the slot of the card holder.
(Open and close hörbert as described under “Inserting or changing batteries”).
Maintenance and care
Wood is a natural product. As such, hörbert’s case may react to moisture by
swelling and warping. Although we counteract such problems by the stable
construction, you should always keep hörbert dry and not expose it to great
cold or heat.
Over time, the wooden case will darken. This is also a natural process over
which we, as the manufacturer, have no influence.
For cleaning, we recommend wiping hörbert with a dry or only very slightly
damp cloth. Do not use any cleaning agents for this purpose, as they can lead
to severe
discoloration or be absorbed by the wood and then slowly released into the
environment.
By design, hörbert has a saliva-proof and sweat-proof varnish that protects
the wood from contamination and moisture fluctuations.
Other than the occasional replacement of batteries and digital content,
hörbert requires no further care.
Nevertheless, it is recommended to check hörbert for damage from time to time
to avoid risking injury to children playing with it.
Most damages in the wood can be corrected with a very fine sandpaper, because
the material wood is very “goodnatured” in this respect.

SET-functions
The SET functions allow the following settings:
– Sleep Timer
– Bluetooth and pairing
– Volume limit piano / forte
– WiFi on / off
– Microphone on / off (if a microphone is built in)
– Reset to factory settings (Reset)
Activating the SET mode: The SET button is located inside hörbert at the
top edge of the PCB next to the hörbert logo.Open hörbert as already
described above under changing batteries or inserting memory card.
- Switch on hörbert.
- Press the SET button once. A green light next to the SET button will then light up continuously. Now the SET functions are activated according to the template on Fig. 1, the setting options are explained below.
- To cancel the changes made, turn hörbert off by pressing the knob.
- To save the performed changes, you have to leave the SET mode by pressing the SET button again. Hörbert will automatically start playing again after a few seconds.
Sleep Timer
Sleep Timer on/off:
The sleep timer switches hörbert off after a preset runtime.
This can signal to the child how time is passing, or it simply saves power if
hörbert has been left behind.
To activate the sleep timer, press the dark purple button in the first row on
the top left.
A single beep means: Sleep Timer is on. Hörbert will turn off after the
selected playing time.
A beep twice means: Sleep Timer is off. Hörbert will then not switch off timer
controlled.
Select a playing time: Red key: with each click on this key in SET mode,
the playing time is extended by 1 hour at a time. A short, highpitched signal
tone sounds for each hour to confirm this. You can increase the playing time
(up to 7 hours) until you hear two low beeps. They mean “zero” hours. It means
you start counting up again from 1 with the next high tone. Dark blue key:
Each time you click on this button in SET mode, the playing time is extended
by +10 minutes. A short, high-pitched signal tone sounds to confirm each time.
You can increase the playing time (up to 50 minutes) until you hear two low-
pitched beeps. They mean “zero” minutes. This means that you start counting up
again at 10 minutes with the next high-pitched tone.
Volume limit piano/forte
With the light blue button you can limit the volume to piano.
A single, high signal tone means: forte (i.e. no additional volume
limitation).
Two low signal tones mean: piano
In the “piano” setting, hörbert can no longer be turned up to its full volume
using the volume knob, but is limited to a lower volume. In the forte setting,
hörbert can be turned up to its full, but still child-safe volume.
WiFi on/off
With the orange button, you can set whether hörbert is allowed to connect to a
WLAN.
A single, high-pitched signal tone means: on.
Two low-pitched signal tones mean: off.
Important notes:
You can listen to Internet radio or podcasts with hörbert via WLAN if you have
previously stored their URL address in playlists with the hörbert software.
See our operating
instructions for the hörbert software at:
https://www.hoerbert.com/anleitungen/hoerbert.
After editing the memory card with the hörbert software, insert it back into
the hörbert and read in the WLAN data using a key combination. To do this,
press the SET button inside the hörbert when it is switched on and then hold
down the orange button (WiFi) for approx. 7 seconds until you hear a
confirmation tone. Then you can release the button again and press the SET
button inside hörbert again to save. hörbert now knows the WLAN access data
and has deleted them from the memory card again.
Mic on/off
The dark green key can be used to either activate or deactivate the microphone
(8) on a hörbert with a built-in microphone (8) (optional accessory!). A
single, high-pitched signal tone means: on. Using a certain key combination
you can now start and play back recordings with the microphone. See also the
section Recording functions on page 5.
Two low-pitched signal tones mean: off. No microphone recordings are then
possible.
Bluetooth – functions in SET mode
Bluetooth on/off: The light green button can be used to turn the Bluetooth
functions on or off.
A single, high-pitched signal tone means: on Two low beeps mean: off Pairing
on/off: The yellow button allows you to set whether hörbert can pair with new
devices (transmitters or receivers) in Bluetooth mode (pairing on), or whether
it should only pair with devices that were previously paired with it (pairing
off).
A single, high, beep means: on Two low-pitched beeps mean: off Unpair:
Clicking the dove blue button will sound a single beep. Hörbert then deletes
all previous pairings and “forgets” all paired devices. All desired devices
must then be paired again.
Use hörbert as a Bluetooth speaker
Connecting with an external player, e.g. cell phone, tablet or notebook.
In order to connect hörbert to a new external player, Bluetooth and pairing
must first be activated in SET mode. See the SET functions section in this
manual. If you want to
make recordings of the Bluetooth streams, you also need to specify where the
recordings should be saved using the hörbert software. You can find more
information about this in the instructions for the hörbert software at
https://www.hoerbert.com/manuals/hoerbert.
Then you’re ready to stream:
- To set hörbert to Bluetooth speaker mode, press the rotary knob (1) twice in quick succession.
- hörbert emits three ascending beeps as confirmation.
- Inside hörbert the LED will now blink for about 60 seconds. This is how long you have to pair hörbert with another device.
- hörbert will appear on your cell phone in the list of Bluetooth devices in the area with the name “hörbert” and its so-called MAC address, so that you can distinguish between several hörberts.
- After pairing hörbert is connected to the cell phone as a Bluetooth speaker.
- All media content from the cell phone (no calls) will now be played through hörbert’s speaker.
- The cell phone also controls hörbert’s volume and hörbert controls the volume of the cell phone. In doing so hörbert’s volume limits are taken into account. To stop Bluetooth streaming stop the playback on the cell phone.
- To stop the Bluetooth speaker mode, turn off hörbert by pressing the knob once, or disconnect the cell phone.
- hörbert will then wait another 30 seconds for a connection with a player or will switch off after this time.
Pairing hörbert with Bluetooth headphones
In order to connect hörbert to a receiver, e.g. Bluetooth headphones,
Bluetooth and pairing must first be activated via the SET mode on hörbert. See
the SET functions
section in this manual. After that you are ready to go:
-
Turn on hörbert by pressing the knob (1) once.
-
The LED inside hörbert will now flash for 60 seconds with a double flash every second. You have that long to pair hörbert with headphones. If hörbert flashes only
once per second, pairing is not turned on and hörbert will not accept new devices then. (See SET mode) -
Turn on the first headphone and put the headphone in pairing mode. Some headphones will do this on their own.
-
Hörbert and headphones will pair and sound will now be output through the headphones.
-
After that, the LED inside hörbert will blink again for 30 seconds and hörbert will search for a second headphone to pair with.
-
If you want to pair a second headphone, turn on this headphone as well during this 30 second phase.
-
Hörbert and the second headphone will now connect and the sound will also be output through the second headphone.
-
Only when both headphones are switched off again, hörbert will play the sound through its built-in speaker.
Recording functions
Unlocking the recording function
To prevent a memory card from getting completely messed up by one’s own
recordings, an adult must enable one or more playlists for storing a recording
in advance via
the hörbert software. Recordings can then only be made in the playlists
defined in this way. Otherwise, hörbert will emit two long, low-pitched error
beeps if you try to save a
recording on a playlist that has not been enabled.
Allowing recordings on certain playlists
- download the latest hörbert software from our service page under Software Downloads and Recording Questions: https://www.hoerbert.com/service/
- start the hörbert software after successful installation and read in the memory card.
- The exact procedure for setting playlists for recordings can be found in the instructions for the hörbert software at https://www.hoerbert.com/manuals/hoerbert.
Stop a recording
To stop recording from the microphone, Bluetooth stream or Internet radio,
press the black button. The recording ends, is saved behind the title that was
playing before the recording and is also played automatically after approx. 10
seconds.
Discarding a recording
To discard the recording and not save it, stop the recording by pressing the
rotary knob (1).
Playback of a microphone recording
In the case of a microphone recording, this is also played back immediately a
few seconds after recording. It lands directly after the file in which you
started the recording.
Afterwards, you can always call it up again from this playlist. With the help
of the hörbert software, you can also move the recording to another location.
See the
instructions for the hörbert software at
https://hoerbert.com/manuals/hoerbert.
Playback of Internet radio recordings
Recordings from the Internet radio always end up at the end of the playlist in
which the URL of the Internet radio station is entered and can be accessed and
played back
from there with the corresponding coloured hörbert button for this playlist.
With the help of the hörbert software, you can also move the recording to
another location. See
the instructions for the hörbert software at https://hoerbert.com/manuals/hoerbert.
Playback of recordings from Bluetooth streams
Recordings from Bluetooth streams always end up at the end of the playlist
that was previously released for Bluetooth recordings. They can then be
accessed and played back from there. With the help of the hörbert software,
you can also move the recording to another location. See the instructions for
the hörbert software at
https://hoerbert.com/manuals/hoerbert.
Problem solving
There is nothing to hear?
Please check the following:
-
Is hörbert switched on?
-
Is the volume set too low?
-
Is the volume of the external player set too low during Bluetooth streaming?
-
Do the headphones have their own volume control that is set too low?
-
Is the memory card seated correctly?
-
Are batteries inserted?
-
Are all batteries inserted the right way around?
-
Are the batteries full?
-
Are all battery clips touching the metal ends of the batteries? If not: Please bend them together slightly.
This correction might be necessary after a very strong blow or fall. -
Does the memory card contain data? This can be checked with the Explorer (Windows) or the Finder (Mac OS X). The files on the card can also be played on the computer as a test. Alternatively: reload the memory card with the hörbert software.
-
Is the memory card formatted? The memory card must be formatted with a FAT32 file system.
-
Was the hörbert software used to record content? Simply copying any files to the memory card is not sufficient.
-
hörbert has sound problems or does not play ? Insert four new batteries or better still charged rechargeable batteries.
