Measuring operation
Warning
- Never exceed the maximum permitted input values for current and voltage.
- Never grip the test prods outside of the grip area identified with tactile markings while taking a measurement.
Risk of electric shock
Only the two measuring cables required for the respective measuring
operation may be connected to the measuring device. For safety reasons, remove
all measuring cables from the measuring device that are not required.
Voltage measurement „V“
Warning: Before measuring the voltage, always make sure that the measuring device is not set to the measuring range for current or resistance.
- To measure DC voltages proceed as follows:
- Switch on the “EM393B” by turning the switch to the largest measuring range (300 V=, DC).
- Plug the measuring cables into the measuring sockets according to the colour coding.
- Connect the two test prods to the object to be measured (battery, circuit, etc.).
- The red test prod corresponds to the positive pole, the black test prod to the negative pole.
- The respective polarity of the measured value together with the actual measured value is shown on the display.
- Depending on the result, you can now adjust the measuring range by turning the switch.
- If you measure the DC voltage and a minus sign “-” is shown in front of the measured value, the measured voltage is negative (or the measuring cables are reversed).
- After completing the measuring process, remove the measuring cables from the object to be measured and switch off the “EM393B” (rotary switch in “OFF” position).
- To measure AC voltages (V ~), proceed as follows:
- Put the “EM393B” into operation as described for the measuring of DC voltage and select the largest measuring range (300 V~, AC).
- To measure AC voltages (V ~), proceed as follows:
- Put the “EM393B” into operation as described for the measuring of DC voltage and select the largest measuring range (300 V~, AC).
- After completing the measuring process, remove the measuring cables from the object to be measured and switch off the “EM393B” (rotary switch in “OFF” position).
Current measurement „A“
Warning
- The maximum permissible voltage must not exceed 300 V.
- Measurements above 200 mA may only be carried out for a maximum of 10 seconds and with a subsequent break of at least 15 minutes between measurements.
- To measure direct currents , proceed as follows:
- Plug the red measuring cable into the 10 A measuring socket (blue, for currents >200 mA) or into the red measuring socket (for currents <200 mA). Plug the black measuring cable into the COM measuring socket.
- Select the largest measuring range, i.e., 200 mA for low direct currents; for larger currents, set the selection switch to 10 A.
- Connect the two test prods in series to the object to be measured (battery, circuit, etc.); the respective polarity of the measured value together with the actual measured value is shown on the display.
- Depending on the result, you can now adjust the measuring range by turning the switch (in this case: direct current less than 20 mA).
- After completing the measuring process, remove the measuring cables from the object to be measured and switch off the “EM393B” (rotary switch in “OFF” position).
Warning
- Never measure currents in excess of 10 A in the 10 A range, as this can result in damage to the “EM393B”. Also, never measure currents in excess of 200 mA in the mA range, as this would trip the internal microfuse.
- Alternating currents cannot be measured with the “EM393B”!
Resistance measurement „Ω“
Warning: Always make sure that all circuitry components, circuits and parts to be measured as well as other objects to be measured are disconnected from the power supply and discharged.
To measure the resistance “Ω”, proceed as follows:
- Switch on the “EM393B” by turning the switch to the largest measuring range (2 M).
- Plug the measuring cables into the measuring sockets according to the colour coding.
- Check the measuring cables for continuity by connecting the two test prods to one another. This must result in a resistance of about 0.5 ohm (inherent resistance of the measuring cables).
- Then connect both test prods to the object to be measured. Unless the object has a high\ resistance or is discontinuous, the measured value appears on the display. Wait until the display has stabilised.
- Depending on the result, you can now adjust the measuring range by turning the switch.
- After completing the measuring process, remove the measuring cables from the object to be measured and switch off the “EM393B” (rotary switch in “OFF” position).
Diode test and continuity check
Warning: Always make sure that all circuitry components, circuits and parts to be measured as well as other objects to be measured are disconnected from the power supply and discharged.
Switch on the “EM393B” by turning the switch to the diode symbol.
- Plug the measuring cables into the measuring sockets according to the colour coding.
- Check the measuring cables for continuity by connecting the two test prods to one another. This must result in a value of about 0, and a humming tone must be audible. A measured value of about < 50 ohm is recognized as representing continuity and a continuous tone is emitted.
- Connect both test prods to the object to be measured.
- After completing the measuring process, remove the measuring cables from the object to be measured and switch off the “EM393B” (rotary switch in “OFF” position).
Test signal TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic)
- Function check for transistor control (logic control in digital technology).
- Output as 0 (no current) or 1 (current).
Replacing the fuse
The multimeter is protected by two fuses (F1 250mA/300V fast, Ø 5x20mm and F2 10A/300V, fast, Ø 5x20mm). To replace it, proceed as follows:
- Disconnect the measuring device from live components and pull off the measuring cables.
- Unscrew both screws at the back of the housing.
- Remove the rear part of the housing.
- Lift the fuse from its socket with tweezers or a screwdriver.
- Insert a new fuse with the same specifications into the socket.
- Avoid touching the printed circuit board or any parts attached to it, as this may cause damage.
- Close the cover and firmly tighten the screws of the housing.
Cleaning
Before cleaning the device, it is essential that you observe the following safety instructions:
When opening covers or removing parts (unless these can be opened or removed by hand), live parts may be exposed. Before carrying out any cleaning or repair work, the connected cables must be disconnected from the measuring device and all objects to be measured. Switch off the “EM393B”. Do not use carbon-containing cleaning agents, benzines, alcohols or the like for cleaning. These substances have a damaging effect on the surface of the measuring device. Moreover, the vapours are hazardous to health and explosive. Do not use any tools with sharp edges, screwdrivers, metal brushes or the like for cleaning. To clean the device or the display and the measuring cables, use a clean, lint-free, antistatic and slightly moist cleaning cloth.
