Care + Maintenance
OF CONCRETE SURFACES
When properly cared for, our concrete pieces can last a lifetime. In the years to come, your concrete piece will further develop its unique character as it progresses through its natural patina. Our concrete surfaces require minimal upkeep, however, we recommend you take a few simple steps to preserve the life of your piece.
Concrete is a naturally porous material. To prevent our pieces from becoming scratched and stained, we apply multiple layers of high-quality sealant.
To avoid damage to the protective layer of sealant, please ensure you do the following:
01
Clean your concrete surface with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive, light solvent or water-based solution.
The layers of sealant on your surface can be damaged by harsh chemical based and citrus based cleaning products. A mild detergent or water based solution are viable options. You can use a high-pressure hose to clean pieces that are placed outdoors.
02
Do not cut items or place hot items directly on your surface.
Concrete is heat resistant, however, extreme temperatures have the potential to damage your concrete surface. As a rule of thumb, we recommend using a trivet or heatproof mat as a barrier between your concrete surface and hot cookware.
03
Do not leave food, liquids and oils on your concrete surface for a long period of time.
Just like other surfaces, such as timber or stone, spills that are left for an extended period of time will stain the sealant on your surface. To minimise the chances of staining, we suggest wiping down your surface after use and any spills. For outdoor surfaces, it’s best to minimise the length of time that flowers, leaves and animal droppings are left before removing them.
04
Resealing your concrete surface.
Down the track you might want to consider re sealing your concrete surface. The timing of re sealing is dependent upon the frequency and intensity of use. As a general rule of thumb, most residential surfaces require an assessment for resealing every 5-7 years. Concrete surfaces in commercial spaces are generally used more frequently and intensely and may require an assessment more often. When the time comes to reseal, feel free to get in touch. We will be happy to assist you with the resealing of your concrete piece.
05
Temporary Water Retention
Your concrete surfaces may experience ‘temporary water retention.’ If a spill of water or condensation from a glass sits on the concrete for a period of time, a small amount of the water might be absorbed into the concrete. This will make the concrete appear slightly darker in that area. We refer to this as ‘shadowing’. Not to worry, this isn’t a stain. As the water dries out any ‘shadowing’ from the water will disappeared.
No cleaning products are required to lift the moisture, simply wipe away any excess water and leave the concrete to dry out. Please note this is specific to water spills. To clean up other liquids follow the instructions in Tips #1 and #3.
