medela SNS Supplemental Nursing System

Product Information

The Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) is a feeding device designed to administer supplemental nutrition to babies while they are being fed at the breast. It is intended for use by caregivers who want to supplement their babies’ breastfeeding with additional nutrients. The SNS consists of a container, tubing, and an attachment device for the breast.

The SNS is not a substitute for breastfeeding. It is important to continue breastfeeding as often as possible to establish and maintain milk supply. The SNS should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional or lactation consultant.

Important Safety Information

It is important to follow all safety guidelines when using the SNS:

  • Do not leave infants unattended while using the SNS.
  • Do not force or pressure the baby to feed with the SNS.
  • Proper cleaning and sanitizing of all parts is necessary to avoid bacterial growth.
  • Do not use the SNS if it is damaged or if any parts are missing.

Important safety information

For your child’s safety and health – WARNING!

  • Always use this product with adult supervision.

  • Always check food temperature before feeding.

  • Inspect before each use. Throw away at the first signs of damage or weakness.

  • Keep components not in use out of the reach of children to avoid risk of suffocation and strangulation.

  • Never attach to cords, ribbons, laces or loose parts of clothing. The child can be strangled.

  • Use Medela original accessories.

  • Do not modify any parts of the SNS .

  • This is a single-user product. Use by more than one user without adequate cleaning may present a health risk and should be avoided.

  • Clean prior to first use.

  • Never use a device, components or parts if dirt, mould or other contamination is visible.

  • Take apart and wash all parts that come in contact with the breast and breast milk immediately after use to avoid drying up of milk residues and clogging of the tube or bacteria growth.

  • Store the clean parts in a clean place. It is important that all residual moisture dries.
Do not store parts in an airtight container/bag.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before use.

  • Do not warm breastmilk or infant formula in a microwave oven as this may cause uneven heating and could scald the infant.
    Note

  • Plastic component parts become brittle when frozen and may become damaged if mishandled, e. g. dropped, knocked over, or over-tightened. Take appropriate care in handling components.

  • Do not use the breastmilk or infant formula if components become damaged.

How to use

  • Be advised that a breastfeeding specialist or healthcare professional can provide advice if you are unsure on how to use the SNS.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before use.

Assembling the SNS

  • See picture 1 for component details.
  • Fill the container with the required amount of breastmilk or infant formula.
  • Attach the clip (1-G) to the ring (1-F). Place the assembled ring and clip around the base of the container (1-E).
  • Place the valve (1-D) on the end of the Twistlok lid (1-C). Screw the assembled Twistlok lid onto the container.
  • Thread the Twistlok tube (1-B) through the clamp (1-A) and press the tube into the clamp so that milk cannot flow (see picture 2).
  • Screw the assembled tube and clamp onto the Twistlok lid.

Positioning the SNS and feeding

  • Once the SNS is completely assembled and the clamp is engaged so that milk cannot flow, invert the SNS and clip it securely and comfortably to a bra strap or top.
  • To position the tube, first attach the baby to the breast (see picture 3). Once the baby has a good latch (created vacuum), gently insert the tube about ½ – ¾ inch (1.5 – 2cm) into the top corner of the baby’s mouth to ensure its stable placement (see picture 4).
  • Release the clamp to let the milk flow.

To change the flow of milk

  • The height of the system can be raised to increase flow and lowered to slow the flow.

Info

  • If either mother or baby are finding it difficult to use the device with feeding, release the baby from the breast and try again. At first it may be necessary to try this several times. Please note, the baby should never be forced or feel pressured to feed with the SNS. If the baby is becoming upset try again at the next feed. For some babies it may take a couple of attempts before this becomes an easy way to feed together.
  • Fixation tape may also be used to help position the tube if necessary. Once the SNS has been assembled and clipped to a bra strap or shirt, tape the end of the tube to the breast with it protruding past the nipple by about ¼ inch (0.5cm) at either the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position. Attach the baby to the breast as you would normally.
