INTENDED USE OF ELECTRICAL SHREDDER

This product is intended for outdoor use only, and must not be used inside a building under any circumstances. The Electrical shredder ESH2-40.4 is designated with a maximum power input of 2500W(P40).
This product is intended for reducing biodegradable, garden organic waste materials to smaller pieces, such as leaves and small branches, and used in a stationary position by an operator standing on the ground.
This product is not intended for shredding pieces of metal, rocks, bottles, cans, etc. or soft waste such as kitchen rubbish.
This product is for private light domestic use only in small spaces; it is not suitable for commercial applications or for larger open spaces and should not be used for any purpose other than described. Following these instructions allow to optimize the lifetime of the product.
After unwrapping the packing, make sure that the product is complete with its accessories (if any). If the product is damaged or has any defect, please do not use it and bring back it to your dealer. If you give this tool to another people, please give him also this instruction manual.
Please note that our equipment has not been designed for use in commercial, trade or industrial applications. Our warranty will be voided if the machine is used in commercial, trade or industrial businesses or for equivalent purposes. This product has been designed to be used over a period of 5 years (Expected lifetime).

GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS

The term «power tool» in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool. Do not operate the product near glass enclosures, automobiles, trucks, window wells, drop-offs, etc. Without properly adjusting the aim of the discharge.
Do not force or overload the product. It will perform better and safer when it is used at the rate that it was designed to work at.
If the product is already assembled, please make sure that all screws are tightly fixed before using it. If the product requires that you assemble it, please make sure upon opening the package that all the elements needed for setting up the product have been provided. If the product is damaged or has defects, do not use it and take it back to the nearest store.

WORK AREA SAFETY WARNINGS

• Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
• Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
• Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY WARNINGS

• Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
• Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
• Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
• Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
• When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
• The machine should be supplied via a residual current device (RCD) with a tripping current of not more than 30 mA. Use of an rcd reduces the risk of electric shock.
• Before use check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or aging. If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY. Do not use the machine if the cord is damaged or worn.

PERSONAL SAFETY WARNINGS

• Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
• Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye and ear protection while operating the machine. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
• Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure  the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
• Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.

POWER TOOL USE AND CARE

• Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed..
• Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
• Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
• Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
• Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
• Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
• Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. In accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
• Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations

SHREDDER SAFETY WARNINGS : TRAINING

• Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the controls and the correct use of the machine.
• Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the machine. Local regulations can restrict the age of the operator.
• Keep in mind, that the operator or user is responsible for accidents or hazards occurring to other people or their property.

SHREDDER SAFETY WARNINGS : PREPARATION

• Obtain ear protection and safety glasses. Wear them at all times while operating the machine.
• While operating the machine always wear  substantial footwear and long trousers. Do not operate the machine when barefoot or wearing open sandals. Avoid wearing clothing that is loose fitting or that has hanging cords or ties.
• Operate the machine in a recommended position and only on a firm, level surface.
• Do not operate the machine on a paved or gravel surface where ejected material could cause injury.
• Before using, always visually inspect to see, that the shredding means, shredding means bolts and other fasteners are secure, the housing is undamaged and that guards and screens are in place. Replace worn or damaged components in sets to preserve balance. Replace damaged or unreadable labels.
• Before use check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or aging. If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY. Do not use the machine if the cord is damaged or worn.
• Never operate the machine while people, especially children, or pets are nearby.

SHREDDER SAFETY WARNINGS : OPERATION

• Before starting the machine, make certain that the feeding chamber is empty.

• Keep your face and body away from the feed intake opening.

• Do not allow hands or any other part of the body or clothing inside the feeding chamber, discharge chute, or near any moving part.

• Keep proper balance and footing at all times. Do not overreach. Never stand at a higher level than the base of the machine when feeding material into it.

• Always stand clear of the discharge zone when operating this machine.

• When feeding material into the machine be extremely careful that pieces of metal, rocks, bottles, cans or other foreign objects are not included.

• If the cutting mechanism strikes any foreign objects or if the machine should start making any unusual noise or vibration, immediately shut off the power source and allow the machine to stop. Disconnect the machine from the supply and take the following steps before restarting and operating the machine:

  • inspect for damage;
  • replace or repair any damaged parts;
  • check for and tighten any loose parts.

• Do not allow processed material to build up in the discharge zone; this may prevent proper discharge and can result in kickback of material through the feed intake opening.

• If the machine becomes clogged, shut-off the power source and disconnect the machine from supply before cleaning debris.

• Never operate the machine with defective guards or shields, or without safety devices, for example debris collector in place.
  NOTE If a debris collector is not used the text of the example may be deleted.

• Keep the power source clean of debris and other accumulations to prevent damage to the power source or possible fire.

• Do not transport this machine while the power source is running.
  Stop the machine, and remove plug from the socket. Make sure that all moving parts have come to a complete stop

  • whenever you leave the machine,
  • before clearing blockages or unclogging chute,
  • before checking, cleaning or working on the machine.

• Do not tilt the machine while the power source is running.

SHREDDER SAFETY WARNINGS : MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

• When the machine is stopped for servicing, inspection, or storage, or to change an accessory, shut off the power source, disconnect the machine from the supply and make sure that all moving parts are come to a complete stop. Allow the machine to cool before making any inspections, adjustments, etc. Maintain the machine with care and keep it clean.
• Store the machine in a dry place out of the  reach of children.
• Always allow the machine to cool before storing.
• When servicing the shredding means be aware that, even though the power source is switched off due to the interlock feature of the guard, the shredding means can still be moved.
• Replace worn or damaged parts for safety. Use only genuine replacement parts and accessorises.
• Never attempt to override the interlocked feature of the guard.

ADDITIONNAL SHREDDER SAFETY WARNINGS

• WARNING: In some countries regulations define at what time of the day and on what special days products are allowed to be used and what restrictions apply! Ask your community for detailed information and observe the regulations in order to preserve a peaceful neighbourhood and avoid committing administrative offences!
  Only operate the product at reasonable hours  not early in the morning, late at night or on weekends/public holidays when people might be disturbed. Inform yourself about local restrictions.

• Longer material standing out from the shredder could lash out when being pulled in by the blades. Keep a safe distance.

• Dust from some paints, coatings and materials may cause irritation or allergic reactions. Dust from wood like oak, beech, MDF and others are carcinogenic. Materials containing asbestos must only be worked or treated by qualified specialist operators.

• Maintain labels and nameplates on the appliance. These carry important safety information. If unreadable or missing, contact the point of purchase for a replacement.

VIBRATION AND NOISE REDUCTION

To reduce the impact of noise and vibration emission, limit the operating time, use low-vibration and low-noise operating modes, and wear personal protective equipment. Take the following points into account to minimize the vibration and noise exposure risks:

1. Only use the product as intended by its design and these instructions.
2. Ensure that the product is in good condition and well maintained.
3. Use correct attachments for the product and ensure they are in good condition.
4. Keep tight grip on the handles/grip surface.
5. Maintain this product in accordance with these instructions and keep it well lubricated (where appropriate).
6. Plan your work schedule to spread any high vibration tool use across a longer period of time.

RESIDUAL RISKS

Even if you are operating this product in accordance with all the safety requirements, potential risks of injury and damage remain. The following dangers can arise in connection with the structure and design of this product:

•  Health defects resulting from vibration emission if the product is being used over long  periods of time or not adequately managed and properly maintained.

• Injuries and damage to property due to broken cutting attachments or the sudden impact of hidden objects during use.

• Danger of injury and property damage caused by flying objects.

• Prolonged use of this product exposes the operator to vibrations and may produce
  ‘whitefinger’ disease. In order to reduce the risk, please wear gloves and keep your hands warm. If any of the ‘whitefinger’ symptoms appear, seek medical advice immediately.

• ‘Whitefinger’ symptoms include: numbness, loss of feeling, tingling, pricking, pain, loss of strength, changes in skin colour or condition. These symptoms normally appear in the fingers, hands or wrists. The risk increases at low temperatures.

SERVICE

Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or its service agent in order to avoid a hazard.
If the carbon brushes need to be replaced, have this done by a qualified repair person (always replace the two brushes at the same time).

Unboxing instructions :

• Wear gloves when unboxing.

INSTALLATION

Assemble the product stand : illustration 2.1 to 2.3
Connect the wheels (1O) and the axle (5) to the stand assembly of the machine (4).
Screw the asseembly stand to the product and put the collection bag up the hooks at the bottom of the main body (7).

PREPARATION

FIRST USE

Pay particular attention using the machine for the first time : focus and dedicate all your attention to this first use. Make the first trial on a free space with no obstacle and no surrounding element.

OPERATION

CAUTION! VERY LONG PLANTS THAT PROTRUDE FROM THE EDGE OF THE SHREDDER MAY SWING OUT SUDDENLY WHEN CAUGHT BY THE BLADES. THE EDGE OF THE SHREDDER MAY SWING OUT ABRUPTLY AS THEY ARE CAUGHT BY THE BLADES. KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE.

After having the extension cord secured, connect it to a power source. To start the electric shredder, right-turn the locking knob (1) and slide up the ON/OFF switch (2). To stop the unit, slide down the ON/OFF switch.

TRANSPORTATION

Transporting the machine may require that you meet certain requirements specific to your country. Please make sure to respect them by contacting the authorities of your country, in order to respect them all.
Let the machine cool for 2 hours outside before transport it. Ensure temperature during transportation will never be out of temperature range given on chapter storage. Protect the product from any heavy impact or strong vibrations which may occur during transportation in vehicles. Secure the product to prevent it from slipping or falling over.

WINTERING & STORAGE

STORE THE MACHINE

Let the machine cool for 2 hours outside before storing it. Be sure to secure the unit while transporting (remove the blade). Examine the unit thoroughly for worn, loose or damaged parts. Clean the product before storing.
Only store the machine in a clean, dry, ventilated place with a temperature range of 4°C to 24°C. Cover it in order to provide added protection. Do not expose the product to sunlight. Make sure the product is always protected from cold and humidity. We recommend using the original package for storage or covering the product with a suitable cloth or enclosure to protect it against dust.

MAINTENANCE

CLEANING

WARNING ! DO NOT HANDLE CUTTING PARTS WITHOUT GLOVES AS THEY ARE SHARP AND CAN BECOME HOT AFTER USE, POTENTIALLY CAUSING PERSONAL INJURY.

Cleaning the product : illustration 5.1
Let the machine cool for 2 hours outside before cleaning it. Take the blade out of the blade latch.
Keep all safety devices, air vents, and motor housing free of debris and dirt. Wipe down the equipment with a cloth. It is highly suggested that you clean the device after every use. Do not use cleaning agents, as these can attack the plastic and weaken the structural integrity of the product.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

REPLACEMENT

When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage. If you shall replace the cutting blade, make sure that the following characteristics are the same : same shape, same length, same thickness, same weight, same material.
The following part of this product may be replaced by the consumer.

WARRANTY

STERWINS WARRANTY

STERWINS products are designed according to the highest quality standards for products intended for the consumer market. This sale warranty covers a period of 5 years as of the date of purchase of the product. This warranty covers all defects in materials and workmanship: missing parts and elements, and damage occurring under normal use circumstances. Repair and replacement of parts do not lead to an extension of the initial warranty period. You must be able to provide proof of the purchase for this product and the date of purchase. Warranty coverage is limited to the value of this product.

WARRANTY EXCLUSIONS

This warranty does not cover problems nor incidents resulting from incorrect use of the product. The following items are not covered by warranty :

• The tool have been used incorrectly
• Damage occurring upon transporting or setting up this product
• Repairs and/or change of parts carried out by a third party
• Damage caused by external factors or foreign objects such as sand or stones
• Damage resulting from non-compliance with the safety and usage instructions
• The tool have been disassembled or opened
• The tool have been in a wet environment (dew, rain, submerged in water…)
• The tool has been used for professional purpose
• The tool has been exposed to a temperature out of the range specified in chapter “storage”

The product must be used under normal usage circumstances, and for non- professional purposes. Therefore, excluded from this warranty are products used by gardening companies, local authorities, as well as companies offering paid rentals or free loaning of equipment.
In the event of a problem or defect, you should first always consult your Sterwins dealer. In most cases, the Sterwins dealer will be able to solve the problem or correct the defect. Keep your invoice or your receipt: these documents will be requested upon processing any claims.
