Any serious incident that has occurred in rela-tion to the product, should be reported to the local contact, who reports to the manufacturer, and the competent authority of the country in which the user/patient is established.

Safety instructions

Lifting and transporting a client always involves risks. It is therefore important that you carefully read the user manual for both the lift and the sling. Make sure that the lift you are using is suitable for the intended use. As a caregiver, you are responsible for the client’s safety and you need to know whether the client is able to handle the lifting process. The sling must meet the client’s needs. If you are in any doubt, we recommend that you contact the distributer.

• Visually inspect the sling each time before use.
• Check that the correct sling is used for the client. The model, size and material must be appropriate to the client’s needs.
• Plan the transfer and lifting process so that it can be carried out as safely as possible.
• Before actually lifting the client, check that the sling is correctly attached to the hanger bar at the time when the clips are under tension.
• It is important that the clips are correctly attached: Apply the clip through the large hole (photo 1) and then pull it to the small hole. The dark grey parts automatically secure the clip attachment (photos 2 and 3). You can hear an audible click when the clip is secured.
• Check that the client is safely seated in the sling before you start lifting.
• Check that the lift is balanced while moving and raising/lowering the client.
• Never leave a client unattended while in the lift.
• Our slings are designed and tested for indoor use by one client at a time and can only be used for lifting one person. The lift is not a swing.
• The sling must not come into contact with sharp objects.

General description/Intended use

The Human Care Full Body Sling E-clip has been designed for lifting people who need full body support. The sling can also effectively be used when lifting a person from the floor due to the integrated headrest. The sling positions the client into a reclining position, reducing the pressure on the client’s legs. The Full Body Sling E-clip Soft has a padded head support. The Full Body Sling In-Situ E-clip has removable stiffen-ers in case the sling stays behind the client. By removing the stiffeners, the head support is flexible and can be folded away. The stiffeners need to be in place in their pockets during a transfer for an adequate head support. With its oval shape, the Columbus Sling pro-vides comfortable support to the head, torso, thighs and also the sitting area, allowing the client to feel safe and secure. This sling is ideally suitable for clients with limited body stability and/or different center of gravity due to, for example, an amputation or wearing a corset. The sling has a sewn-in seat, which means that the client sits on the sling and the leg straps are removed. This gives the client an optimal feeling of being cocooned, which can promote safety due to various factors. The slings are designed for a four-point suspension from a 4-point hanger bar and are available in 2 materials.

Polyester net – flexible and airy
A soft and thin material that breathes and dries quickly. It has light elastic properties and shapes itself to the client’s body. It is the most commonly used sling for short transfers. The

Soft air mesh
This material is a light-weight, cool, soft and breathable mesh fabric. It is made of a mois-ture-wicking fabric, that pulls moisture away from the skin through the fabric where it can evaporate

quickly. The material helps to control body tem-perature. Another advantage of this material is that is it anti-bacterial, which means that it is easier to maintain better hygiene. Furthermore, the material doesn’t smell, even with intensive use. The “two-way stretch” material hugs the body like a second skin. It is therefore particularly suitable for clients with sensitive skin. The material also absorbs involuntary movements, making it suitable for clients with muscle spasms. A sling made of this material can stay in place behind the client in a (modulated) chair or bed for a longer period of time.

Technical specifications

It is very important to use the correct size of sling for the client. So that our sizes can be identified, we use color codes for quick recognition. The color code can be found on the tag next to the sling’s label. This tag can also be used to store/hang up the sling.

The user weights are guidelines only. All models have SWL of 300 kg/660 lbs. Differences in meassurements may occur, tolerances ± 1 cm.

• Human Care is an ISO 13485:2016 certified Swedish medical device company. The Quality Management System is in complaince with US 21 CFR part 820.
  The sling has been tested in accordance with ISO 10535. The sling has a CE marking in accordance with the Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC and/or Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745). The CE mark label is at the sling mark label.

Attachment options
Our slings are designed in the knowledge that people are all different, with a variety of requirements, needs and wishes with regard to lifting. The mechanism and design of a sling must be such that it prevents human mistakes as much as possible. With this in mind, the universal safety clip has been developed. It is shown that many of the accidents that involve lifts are caused by incorrect attachment of the sling to the hanger bar or boom. The safety clip is an important addition because it greatly reduces the likelihood of errors. The clip is placed around the snap hooks of the hanger bar and closes with an audible ‘click’. It is a signal to the caregiver that the clip issecurely attached and cannot unexpectedly become loose. The clip has a built-in lock to pre-vent this from happening. Releasing the clip can be done very easily with one hand. The safety clip is universal and can be used on all types of lifts fitted with mushroom-shaped hooks with a diameter ranging between 6.8 and 8.2 mm.

• Slings with 4 safety clips can only be used with a 4-point hanger bar with snap hooks.

Hanger bars for Human Care lifts

Compatibility

Human Care Group interchangeable slings are suitable for all Human Care lifts and hanger bars. The products can also be used with prod-ucts from other suppliers, which are equipped with the same fastening method for attach-ing slings to a hanger bar and lift. Due to the wide range of products available worldwide, Human Care cannot be held responsible for any mistakes/defects that may result from incorrect use or use of different combinations of slings, hanger bars and lifts from other suppliers. The use of a combined system is at the adviser’s own risk and liability. In order to protect the safety of the client and caregiver, Human Care recommends the follow-ing minimum instructions are followed:

1. When using slings with lifts and hanger bars made by manufacturers other than Human Care, the combined system must be designed with the same sling connec-tion method for the hanger bar of mobile lifts and ceiling lifts, i.e. strap loop slings are used with a strap loop style hanger bar, clip slings are used with a clip style hanger bar.
2. The relevant patient lifts and slings must be CE marked in accordance with the Medical Devices Directive, MDD 93/42/EEC and MDR 2017/745 and comply with the standard requirements for patient lifts as set out in EN ISO 10535.
3. The caregiver must follow the instructions and recommendations set out in the manufacturer’s manuals with regard to the use, care, client, caregiver, cleaning and servicing of slings and lifts.
4. Different products on the assembled lift system: i.e. lift, sling, hanger bar, scales, and other accessories, may have a dif-ferent maximum safe working load. The lowest maximum working load of all the individual products and the system will always apply for the whole system. Always check the labels on all individual products in the system.
5. Individual risk assessment, including practi-cal testing of the system and validation of the specific combination used, is required to confirm that the size of the sling is correct for its intended use and compatible with the width and design of the hanger bar. The combined system must be documented by the competent prescriber. If you have any questions, please contact your local Human Care office or distributor.

Sling instructions

Lifting the client from a lying position, recommended for Columbus Sling E-clip

1. Turn the client on his/her side. Position the sling so that the center of the sling is aligned with the client’s back. Pay attention to the arrow symbol on the product label (middle, top and outside of the sling). The lower part of the sling must be positioned directly under the client’s coccyx. Turn the client on his/her back and pass the sling underneath. Turn the client on his/her back. If the bed is adjustable, it is a good idea to raise the head end of the bed so that the client ends up in a half-sitting position.
2. Pull the leg pieces of the sling between the client’s legs. Lower the lift’s hanger bar to the client’s abdomen. Attach the clips to the hanger bar. Attach the clips near the shoulders first, followed by the clips near the thighs.
3. Take a moment in this position and check that all clips are securely attached to the hanger bar. The dark grey parts are in the closed position so that the clips are secured.
4. Continue to lift the client. It may be necessary to lower the bed slightly. Lift the client’s legs slightly and turn him/her away from the bed. It is possible to put your arm around the client as you move him/her to create a greater sense of security. When using the 4-point spreader bar, the client can be moved into any position between a recumbent and sitting position. Using the electric 4-point spreader bar, place the client in a sitting position when he/she is above the chair or wheelchair or into a recumbent position if the client is above his/her bed.
5. Detaching the sling Only detach the clips when the client is fully placed on a solid surface such as a bed or wheelchair. Make sure the hanger bar cannot hit the client. Check that all connection points are loose before removing the sling.

Lifting the client from a seated position

1. Pull the sling behind the client’s back. Pay attention to the arrow symbol on the product label (middle, top and outside of the sling). The lower part of the sling must be positioned directly behind the client’s coccyx.
2. Bring the leg support of the lifting strap forward. Pull up the leg supports in between the client’s legs. Lower the hanger bar to the belly of the client. Attach the clips to the hanger bar. Attach the clips near the shoulders first, followed by the clips near the thighs.
3. Take a moment in this position and check that all clips are securely attached to the hanger bar. The dark grey parts of the clips are in the closed position so that the clips are secured.
4. Continue to lift the client. It is possible to put your arm around the client as you move him/her to create a greater sense of security. When using the 4-point spreader bar, the client can be moved into any position be-tween a recumbent and sitting position.
5. Detaching the sling Only detach the clips when the client is fully placed on a solid surface such as a bed or wheelchair. Make sure the hanger bar cannot hit the client. Check that all connection points are loose before removing the sling.

Troubleshooting

•      The lifting sling is not entirely suitable – the clips must be load bearing at the same time.

The client is not in balance when he/she is being lifted.| •      The instructions in the individual logbook have not been followed or a new assessment/adjustment must be carried out.
The sling is too small.| •      This can be very uncomfortable for the client. The sling could cut into the client’s skin and/or his/her back may not be supported sufficiently.

Note: It is important that the correct sling is used for each client and that individual tests are carried out to ensure that the sling meets the client’s needs and the transfer situation.

Maintenance instructions

Wear and tear
Check the sling for any signs of wear and tear. It is important to check the fabric, outer edges, seams, and E-clips before use. Damaged lifting equipment must not be used.

Cleaning
Human Care slings are intended for individual use. In order to prevent infections or transmission of bacteria, it is important to clean the slings properly. All lifting slings should be machine washed and dried as soon as possible. Slings must always be cleaned after being exposed to moisture. See the washing instructions on the sling’s label.

Periodic service
A periodic service must be carried out at least every six months. See Human Care’s periodic service checklist.

Product lifetime
The product´s expected lifetime 3 years or 150-180 times washing, if the product is used as intended and maintained according to the manufacturer´s instructions, depending on the intensity of use and maximum load applied during use. If the product label is no longer legible, the product should be discarded.

Recycling
Once the product has reached the end of its life, it should be disposed according to your coun-try’s rules, especially for the separate collection of electrical and electronic products. Correct disposal helps prevent negative consequences for the environment and human health.

Disinfection procedure
Human Care slings are intended to be used by one client at a time. In order to prevent possible transmission of infectious diseases, it is import-ant to clean the sling if it has become dirty or if it is used by another client.

• 25011C: The stiffeners should be removed during laundry. The stiffeners need to be placed back in the sling before performing a transfer with a client.
