GAF 0894818 Tuscan Sunset Laminated Hip and Ridge Roof Shingles
STEP 1
Prepare starter course … To create a starter strip, cut off the 8″ (203 mm) exposed portion of the ridge cap shingle and use the remaining double- layer piece with self-seal stripe as the starter strip. Starting at the eaves for hips and opposite the prevailing wind for ridges, install the starter strip. Using two nails, one on each side, fasten the starter strip 1″ (25.4 mm) in from the edge in the double-layer portion of the starter strip. Do NOT nail in the self-seal stripe. (See Figure 1)
STEP 2
Install a full ridge cap shingle … Beginning with a full ridge cap
shingle, completely cover the starter strip. (See Figure 2) Use the tail
alignment guide
to help center the ridge cap shingle over the hip or ridge. Using two nails,
one on each side, fasten 9 1/4″ (235 mm) back from the exposed folded edge and
1″ (25.4 mm) in from the edge in the double layer portion of the ridge cap
shingle. Do NOT nail in the self-seal stripe. (See Figure 3)
STEP 3
Install subsequent ridge cap shingles… Align the exposed folded edge with the
exposure notches on the previously installed ridge cap shingle. Alignment to
these notches will help maintain the proper 8″ (203 mm) finished exposure.
Ensure the tail alignment guide is centered over the hip or ridge and fasten
ridge cap shingles into place following Step 2. Continue the installation in
the same manner maintaining an 8″ (203 mm) finished exposure.
(See Figure 4)
Note: Use only zinc-coated steel or aluminum, 10 – 12 gauge, barbed,
deformed, or smooth shank roofing nails with heads 3/8″ to 7/16″ (10 mm – 12
mm) in diameter. Nails should be long enough to penetrate at least 3/4″ (19
mm) into wood plank decks or just through plywood and OSB decks. Do NOT nail
in the self-seal stripe. Nails must be driven flush with the surface of the
shingle. Overdriving will damage the shingle. Raised nails may interfere with
the wind resistance of the shingles.
Special Application Section
For Cold Weather Application
- When applying ridge cap shingles in temperatures below 50°F (10°C), open the carton on the roof and allow shingles to warm before installation. Warmingthe ridge cap shingles will help them conform to the ridge profile for easier application. When self-sealing is delayed due to cold weather, apply quarter-sized dabs of an approved asphalt
plastic cement (must conform to ASTM D4586 Type I or Type II) between ridge cap pieces and press firmly to ensure good contact between pieces.
Note: Excessive application of asphalt plastic cement can cause blistering of ridge cap shingle.
For Maximum Wind Speed Coverage Under Limited Warranty
- Apply six 1″ (25.4 mm) beads of polyurethane roofing and flashing sealant (must conform to ASTM C920), approximately 2″ (13 mm) in diameter,fo the underside of each ridge cap shingle in the locations shown in Figure 5.
- Fasten with four nails, two nails on each side, placed 9 V” (235 mm) back from the exposed folded edge and 1″ (25.4 mm) and 2″ (51 mm) in from the edge in the double-layer portion of the ridge cap shingle (See Figure 6) Do NOT nail in the self-seal sfripe
Note: Excessive application of polyurethane roofing and flashing sealant can cause blistering of ridge Cap shingle.
For Rake Installation (optional):
Starting at the eaves, follow Steps 1-3 above. Pre-flex each ridge cap shingle
before fastening fo help it conform to the rake edge profile.
