Goldring 456EROHX Eroica Moving Coil Cartridge

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

  1. Mounting. To protect the stylus from damage during mounting, do not remove the stylus guard. Note: Mounting is simpler if connecting leads are attached before screwing cartridge into headshell. This cartridge has standard 12.7mm fixing centres. Screws are provided and these should be used to fasten the cartridge rigidly to the headshell. Do not overtighten these screws.
Mount the cartridge so that when it is seen from the front and the side its top surface is parallel to the record (see fig 1).
The use of a small mirror will help aligning the cartridge correctly. Place the mirror on the turntable and rest the stylus on it. Now make the necessary adjustments to the arm or headshell to ensure that the cartridge is parallel with the record surface and not tilted.

  2. Connections. The contact pins are colour coded according to the international standard colour code. Connect the four pickup leads to the corresponding pins on the cartridge (see fig 2).
Warning. Under no circumstances should the headshell leads be soldered direct to the contact pins on the cartridge. Heat applied to the contact pins will cause damage to the internal connections.

  3. Playing weight. The correct playing weight is 1.7g. Do not forget to remove the stylus guard before setting playing weight.

  4. Matching. The EROICA should be connected to the “magnetic pickup” input of the amplifier (normally 47kΩ). The EROICA has an output of 2.5 mV at 5 cm /sec which should adequately load most present day hi-fi amplifiers without needing a step up device. The EROCIA LX has an output of 0.5 mV at 5 cm/sec into a load of 100 Ω. If the amplifier has not got a moving coil input, a separate head amplifier will be required. A head amp with gain of approx10 (20 dB) should load most modern amplifiers (using the magnetic input)

Loading for the EROCIA LX is not critical but will affect output, i.e. changing from 100 to 10 Ω will reduce output by approx. 4 dB (0.3mV). The character of the sound may also change. Cartridge load should be 100 ohms and the total capacitance in parallel with this including arm lead and amplifier capacitance should not exceed 500 pF. If other values of load resistance and capacitance are used the response will depart from the published information but this may not affect one’s listening pleasure.

Stylus replacement. The EROICA has an integral stylus which cannot be replaced by the user. If your Stylus is worn or damaged, return the cartridge to your dealer. The entire unit will be replaced for the cost of a replacement stylus.

Stylus care. Dust and dirt on the stylus tip produces sound distortion and accelerates wear of both the record and stylus tip. The stylus must always be kept dust-free with the aid of a fine brush. The brush should be use with a forward motion from the base of the cantilever. Liquid stylus cleaners must be used sparingly if at all.
The cartridge is guaranteed against electrical mechanical faults for one year from the date of purchase. The Guarantee however does not include worn styli, and is invalidated if the instructions are not complied with or if any unauthorised modification, repair or alteration has been attempted.
