Mounting Instructions

The Cannon® Digi-Troll IV 120KHZ Transducer enables the bottom following option to dect and follows bottom contour changes. The accuracy of your Digi- Troll IV is largely dependent on correctly installing the transducer on your boat. If not installed properly, your Digi-Toll IV unit will not give you the service of which it is capable.
The Digi-Troll IV functions by sending a series of sonar pulses from the transducer. Each pulse travels through the water until it hits the bottom terrain. The pulse then “bounces” back to the transducer where it is converted to an electrical signal and used to adjust the depth of the downrigger weight accordingly.
The face of the transducer must be in intimate contact with undisturbed water. Sonar signals cannot travel either through open air or through turbulent water. Air and/or turbulence will “blind” the sonar, causing it to lose bottom contact or otherwise cause poor operation of the bottom following feature. To ensure that the transducer is mounted properly, follow the suggestions in this manual.
Transom Mounts
The most common place to mount your transducer is on the transom. It may be helpful to drive your boat at a variety of speeds and observe where the water flows most smoothly off the transom. Smooth, clean water often flows from the center of the transom at the base of a step. The transducer is designed to mount slightly below the bottom of the boat. The metal brackets have a slot that allows you to make vertical adjustments to the mounting.
Performance Considerations
Various transducer mount methods depend on your
boat’s performance. If the bulk of your trolling is at 7 MPH or less, mounting the transducer in almost any loaction along the bottom of the boat is acceptable. It is not recommended that you use the bottom following option at speeds greater than 10 MPH. If you would like to use the bottom monitoring mode on your Digi-Troll IV at higher speeds, a mounting position low and toward the center of the transom is a must. Mounting suggestions for low and high-speed performance are given below.
Regardless of the operating speed, you prefer, always remember the face of the transducer should be mounted parallel with the water if at all possible.
In most cases, we recommend the transducer be centrally located with the nose between 1/8″ and 1/4″ below the hull. If the boat has only a slightly “v”ed hull (15 degrees or less), the transducer should be mounted parallel with the water. (See Figure 1, Option 2)
The deeper the transducer’s pointed end is below the hull and the more centrally located the transducer is, the better your unit will operate.
NOTE: If you have an aluminum boat avoid placing the transducer behind a row of rivets.
NOTE: Water turbulence is minimized when the transducer face is mounted below the bottom of your craft.

FIGURE 1 Option 1 Mounting – High-Speed Operation
In high-speed operation, drag and rooster tails can result from mounting the transducer too low. Also, water flowing to high-performance engines becomes more turbulent. Mounting the transducer as in Option 1 (See Figure 1) will minimize the turbulence and give better high-speed results.
CAUTION: Never drag a weight at high speeds. Use the monitor mode on the Digi-Troll IV if you wish.
Mounting Height
Lower

  • Better for aluminum boats with rivets in the hull
  • Better for high speeds

Option 2 Mounting – Low-Speed Operation
In low-speed operation, the transducer can be positioned to show what is directly under the boat. However, it may increase drag and possibly throw a rooster tail when you plane the boat. If you choose Option 2, make sure the angle of the boat’s hull stays within the lines marked on the template. (See Figure 2) It may be necessary to angle the transducer somewhat to stay within the dotted lines.
Higher

  • Less boat drag and no rooster tails
  • Less chance of transducer damage

How to Mount the Transducer

To mount the transducer:

  • Refer to Figure 3.
  • Use the template as a guide and drill four 9/64″” holes in the transom, 3/4″ deep
  • Loosely attach the two metal brackets with four #10 self-tapping screws provided.
  • Attach the transducer to the brackets with screws, washers, & nuts provided.
  • Adjust the brackets until the desired height is achieved and snug up the screws.
  • Determine the angle you want on the transducer face and tighten the bolts.
  • Finally, remove the screws in the hull one at a time and fill the holes with silicone before retightening. Each time one of the self-tapping screws is removed, the holes must be resealed.

Tools Needed:

  1. Phillips Head Screw Driver
  2. 9/32″ Wrench
  3. Drill with a 9/64″ bit
  4. Silicone sealant

WARNING: Failure to reseal the holes when you remove the screws from your hull can seriously damage your boat.
If You Have Problems
If the desired operational characteristics from your downrigger, try these suggestions:

  1. Loosen the 4 screws holding the transducer to the brackets and rotate the back of the transducer slightly down to a maximum of 5 degrees. Retighten the bolts and check again on the water.
  2. If step one doesn’t produce results, loosen the 4 screws in the transom and lower the transducer to 1/4″ below the hull. Retighten the screws and try again. If needed, the transducer can be lowered until the top is flush with the bottom of the hull.
  3. If good operation still has not been achieved, experiment by increasing and decreasing the angle of the transducer with respect to the bottom of the boat and by changing the distance the transducer is positioned below the bottom of the boat. Changes as small as one degree or 1/16″ can produce the desired results
