Exterior Wood Door Care & Maintenance Instructions

Once installed and adjusted according to the TruStile Wood Entry Door General Installation Instructions, the primary care that your natural wood entry system will require is topcoat or paint coat maintenance, especially on the exterior facing side of the unit.

For stained entry systems, the topcoat is critical to protecting the finish and the underlying wood components.

If it is properly maintained, it will help prevent damage to the underlying wood components and avoid more costly stripping and re-finishing of your entry system.

For painted entry systems, it is important to re-paint the product before the original paint finish wears down.

Please follow the finish maintenance instructions below to maintain your warranty coverage and ensure you maximize the life of your natural wood door.

Stained Entry System Finish Maintenance Instructions:

Maintaining the topcoat on your stained wood entry system is essential for long-term performance and continued warranty coverage:

  • Inspect entry system at least once a year for any signs of topcoat degradation or fading. Entry systems with significant exposure may require more frequent inspection and maintenance.
  • Apply a compatible topcoat refresh or re-conditioner product as needed to maintain topcoat protection.
    • For TruStile factory finished doors, a compatible topcoat refresh kit can be ordered through TruStile customer service.
  • If topcoat is regularly reconditioned and maintained, sanding and stripping the finish off the entry system will not be necessary during its lifetime.
  • If topcoat is not maintained and degrades to the point of causing the finish to break down, then a full sanding and re-finishing may become necessary. Some signs of finish break down are severe fading, chalking, flaking or cracking of the finish. If these conditions are visible, a careful sand down to the raw veneer surface will be necessary. Be sure not to over sand through veneer surface during sanding. Once sanding is completed, re-finish entry system according to the TruStile Wood Entry System Finishing Instructions.

Painted Entry System Finish Maintenance Instructions:

  • The painted finish on your entry system should be inspected annually and re-painted to your desired specification after the first signs of any blistering, peeling, or cracking in the finish.
