NAG1 – AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION – INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION

NOTE:
If either the electro- hydraulic control unit or transmission is being reconditioned ( clutch /seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TCM Adaptation  Procedure using the scan tool (Refer to 08 – Electrical/8E – Electronic Control Module s/MODULE, Transmission Control – Standard Procedure).

  1. Check torque converter hub and hub drive flats for sharp edges burrs, scratches, or nicks. Polish the hub and flats with 320/400 grit paper and crocus cloth if necessary. Verify that the converter hub o-ring is properly installed and is free of any debris. The hub must be smooth to avoid damaging pump seal at installation.

  2. If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the manual shift lever and shift cable bracket, from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.

  3. Lubricate oil pump seal lip with transmission fluid .

  4. Align converter and oil pump.

  5. Carefully insert converter in oil pump. Then rotate converter back and forth until fully seated in pump gears.

  6. Check converter seating with a scale and straightedge (A). Surface of converter lugs should be at least 19 mm (3/4 in.) to rear of straightedge when converter is fully seated.

  7. Temporarily secure converter with C-clamp.

  8. Position transmission on jack and secure it with chains.

  9. Check condition of converter flexplate . Replace the plate if cracked, distorted or damaged. Also be sure transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.

  10. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the rear pocket of the engine’s crankshaft.

  11. Raise transmission and align the torque converter with the flex plate and transmission converter housing with the engine block.

  12. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower or tilt transmission to align the converter housing with engine block dowels

  13. Carefully work transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.

  14. Install two bolts (1) to attach the transmission to the engine.

  15. Install remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications) .

  16. Install the lower bolts holding the transmission and engine and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications) .

  17. Install transfer case , if equipped. NOTE: Inspect the fill tube grommet to determine if the grommet is new or used. If a new fill tube grommet is in the transmission , pierce the center of the grommet with a ballpoint pen, or similar instrument, to prepare the grommet for the fill tube installation. case

  18. Install transmission fill tube and bolt and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications) .

  19. Install rear support to transmission and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications) .

  20. Install the transmission crossmember (Refer to 13 – Frame and Bumpers/Frame/CROSSMEMBER, Installation)

  21. Remove safety stand or jack from under engine and transmission.

  22. . Install the flex plate bolts and tighten to the proper . (Torque Specifications)

  23. Install the starter motor . (Refer to 08 – Electrical/8F – Engine Systems/Starting/STARTER – Installation)

  24. Connect gearshift cable (1 ) to support bracket (2) and transmission manual lever (3) .

  25.  Adjust gearshift cable if necessary.

  26. Install all breather hoses.

  27. Install 13-pin plug connector (1). Turn bayonet lock of the adapter plug (2).

  28.  Install 13-pin plug connector heat shield (1) and bolts (2) and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications).GEARSTAR NAG1 Mopar Automatic Transmission - fig 5NOTE: line mounting clips are single use only and
Transmission cooler must be replaced when ever removed.

  29.  Connect cooler lines (1) into transmission and install new mounting clips

  30. Align and connect rear propeller shaft (Refer to 03 – Differential and Driveline/Propeller Shaft/SHAFT, Drive – Installation) .

  31. Align and install front propeller shaft, if equipped. . (Refer to 03 – Differential and Driveline/Propeller Shaft/SHAFT, Drive Installation)

  32. Install the catalytic converter (Refer to 11 – Exhaust System/CONVERTER, Catalytic – Installation) .

  33. Install any skid plates removed previously . (Refer to 13 – Frame and Bumpers/Under Body Protection/PLATE, Skid, Installation)

  34. Lower vehicle.

  35. Connect the negative battery cable.

  36. Fill transmission with Mopar® ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid +4 .
NOTE: If the transmission is being reconditioned (such as clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TCM Adaptation Procedure using a scan tool.
