Firmware Update
Procedures
Overview of Update Steps
- Prepare a PC (Windows) or Mac (Macintosh) computer and setup your MIDI interface for data transmission.
- Download MIDI software (for Mac: SysEx Librarian, for Windows: SendSx) from the specified website and install it on your computer.
- Download the latest firmware from the Free The Toneʼs website.
- Connect the TRI AVATAR to the MIDI interface and send the firmware to the TRI AVATAR by using the installed MIDI software.
- After writing the data to the TRI AVATAR, press the MODE switch. This will cause the TRI AVATAR to reboot and complete the firmware update procedure. Note that user preset contents will not be erased by this firmware update.
Firmware Update Procedures
1.Confirmation of Firmware Version
- Turn on the power to the TRI AVATAR.
- Confirm light-up times of the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs above the SELECT footswitches.
- Turn off the power to the TRI AVATAR.
After powering on, the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs above the SELECT footswitches turn on and off from 1 to 4 in sequence. Then all of the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs will turn on and off. The current firmware version can be checked by counting the number of light-up times. If the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs do not illuminate, then the TRI AVATAR is running with the ver. 1.0 firmware. If it is running with the ver. 1.1 firmware, it will reboot after all of the 1‒4 LEDs illuminate once. The light- up times of the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs for each firmware version are shown on the firmware download page.
2. Preparation of Computer and MDI Interface
- Prepare a PC (Windows) or Mac (Macintosh) computer and a MIDI interface.
- Connect the computer and the MIDI interface.
- Download the MIDI interface driver and make data transmission ready.
At this phase the FLIGHT TIME and the MIDI interface are not connected.
Regarding setup procedures for your MIDI interface, please refer to its
operation manual.
(* Please use a stable data transmissionable MIDI / USB interface cable for
connecting a MIDI device to a PC.)
3. Download of the Latest Firmware for TRI AVATAR
From the Free The Toneʼs website
(http://www.freethetone.com/support/download.html), download the latest
firmware file for the TRI AVATAR (TA-1H_FIRMWARE_V.ZIP) and unzip it.
(Note that “” denotes the version number.)
Be sure to write down the name (ex: FIRMWARE) for the download destination
folder in which you save the file.
NOTE: When downloading the file, you may sometimes encounter a message says that downloading TA-1H_FIRMWARE_V**.ZIP can damage your computer. In such a case, ignore the message and proceed to downloading.
4. Download and Installation of MIDI Software
Mac users: go to page 3.
Windows users: go to page 7.
For Mac Computer
1. Preparation of MIDI Software
- Download the freeware “SysEx Librarian” from http://snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/ and save it in any folder.
- Unzip the downloaded ZIP file and install it.
- Start SysEx Librarian. The following screen will appear:
2. Configuration of SysEx Librarian
Select the MIDI interface to be used from the main windowʼs pull-down menu.
(e.g. : When using the YAMAHA UX16 interface, “Port 1” is displayed as shown
in the figure. The display differs depending on the interface, so please refer
to the interface manual.) The list of interfaces will not be shown if the MIDI
interface is not connected or the MIDI interface driver is not installed
correctly. In such a case, please check if the MIDI interface is connected
correctly and the driver has been installed.
When you select the interface to be used, the screen changes to the following one:
3. Selection of Update File
- Click the “+” (or “Add…” on some versions) button located near the left bottom corner of the main window.
- Select the latest TRI AVATAR firmware file youʼve downloaded.
After selecting the file, the following message appears. Click the “OK” button.
When the file is successfully read, its file name is listed as shown in the figure below. Click the file name to highlight. Now the file data in your Mac is ready to send.
4. Connecting TRI AVATAR and MIDI Interface
- Connect only the TRI AVATARʼs MIDI IN terminal to the MIDI interfacesʼ MIDI OUT terminal.
- Turn on the power to the TRI AVATAR while holding down both the MODE and EDIT switches.
The PRESET 1‒4 LEDs above the SELECT switches turn on and off in sequence and the PRESET MODE and MANUAL MODE LEDs above the MODE switch and the EDIT LED above the EDIT switch illuminate.
The TRI AVATAR is now ready to receive data.
5. Data Transmission
Click the “Play” button near the left top corner of the SysEx Librarianʼs main
screen.
As soon as the data transmission starts as shown below, the PRESET 1 LED on
the TRI AVATAR flashes.
The PRESET 1‒4 LEDs flash and illuminate steadily starting from the PRESET 1
LED. When all of the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs illuminate, then the data writing process
is completed.
CAUTION!
Even when the indication on the SysEx Librarian shows that the data transfer
is completed, the writing process on the TRI AVATAR is not completed until all
of the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs turn on. Never turn off the power to the TRI AVATAR
during the data transmission and writing process.
When all of the PRESET 1‒4 LEDs illuminate, press the MODE switch to reboot and to be ready for operation. This completes the firmware update procedure.
For Windows Computer
1. Preparation of MIDI Software
- Download the shareware “SendSx” from http://www.bome.com/products/sendsx and save it in any folder. You can use it free for a trial period.
- Unzip the downloaded ZIP file and install it to your computer.
- Start SendSx. The following screen will appear:
2. Configuration of SendSx
Select the MIDI interface to be used from the “MIDI Out” menu.
The list of interfaces will not be shown if the MIDI interface is not
connected or the MIDI interface driver is not installed correctly. In such a
case, please check if the MIDI interface is connected correctly and the driver
has been installed.
When you select the interface to be used, its name is shown in the lower half of the screen:
3. Selection of Update File
-
Select “Open” from the “File” menu.
-
In the file selection window, select the firmware file youʼve downloaded.
When the file is read successfully, a screen that looks like the following will appear. Now your computer is ready for data transmission.
4. Setting up Data Transmission Speed
-
Select “Settings…” from the “Options” menu.
-
When the Settings window is opened, adjust the slider so that Sending MIDI Speed is lower than 742 bytes/s and click the OK button. The PC is now ready to send data.
CAUTION!
If the data transmission speed is too fast, the TRI AVATAR will freeze during
the data writing process and the firmware update will fail. In such a case,
reboot the unit and lower the “Sending MIDI” Speed and try data transmission
again.
NOTE: User presets will not be lost even if the firmware update fails.
