Preparing For Your Exam
Five days prior to your procedure:
- STOP your medications that have blood thinning effects. Examples: Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Celebrex, and arthritis medications. Tylenol and Aspirin are okay. (If you are on Coumadin, Plavix, Xarelto or any other anticoagulant/antiplatelet medication you must contact your Primary Care Physician for instructions.)
- Diabetics: If you are diabetic and take insulin, call your Primary Care Physician for instructions. Please check your blood sugar/glucose before leaving your home.
One day before your procedure:
- NO FOOD all day! Drink only CLEAR LIQUIDS (see below) starting when you wake up in the morning, throughout the entire day and up until 2 hours before your scheduled admit time. The more clear liquids you drink, the better the prep solution will work and the better you will feel. Below is a list of clear liquids that you may have. Please note that no red dye is allowed (no red Jell-O, red drinks, etc.). Please limit all dark beverages such as tea, soda, coffee, etc. to 2 cups daily.
Examples of Clear Liquids (NO RED DYE)
Soda | Juice | Sports drinks | Other Options |
---|---|---|---|
All Sodas | Apple | Gatorade | Coffee/Tea (limit 2) Water |
Root Beer (limit 2) | Cranberry | Powerade | Crystal Light Popsicle |
Sprite/7UP | Grape | All Sport | Jell-O |
Coke/Pepsi (limit 2) | White Grape | Propel | Broth/Bouillon |
Day before your procedure at 5:00 PM:
- At 12:00 noon take both tablets with water.
- At 1:00 PM, mix together the solutions. Tear open one flavor pack of your choice and pour into the HalfLytely bottle. Discard unused packs and add drinking water to the top line on the bottle. Cap bottle and shake to dissolve the powder. The solution then may be refrigerated.
- Bowel movements usually occur within 1-6 hours. After a bowel movement occurs, begin to drink the solution. If no bowel movement after 6 hours, begin to drink the solution.
- Drink 1 glass every 10 minutes. It is better to drink each glass quickly (may use a straw). Be sure to drink only about half of the solution. This should take approximately 45 minutes.
- Drink plenty of clear liquids thereafter. Again, the more you drink, the better the prep works and the better you will feel.
If your prep is not working by 9:00 PM or if you are vomiting, please
call physician at402-441-5600
Day of your procedure:
- 3-4 hours prior to your admission time, take the other half of the solution.
- Even if your prep results are already clear/yellow, you WILL still need to take the morning prep!!
- After completion of your second prep your stools should look clear/yellow (urine like) and you should be able to see through the liquid to the bottom of the toilet.
- Continue to drink clear liquids until two hours prior to your scheduled admit time, then nothing more to drink.
You may:
1. Take your morning heart, blood pressure or seizure medication with sips of water.
2. Brush your teeth and gargle in the morning.
3. Do NOT smoke, chew tobacco, chew gum or suck on hard candy!
Due to your sedation, we require all patients be accompanied by a
responsible adult, who will drive you home and stay with you for at least 24
hours. This person will receive information necessary for your care.
Please read the back of this instruction sheet for additional information
regarding bowel prep instructions.
Please Note:
- Your bowel prep prescription is sent to your pharmacy the day your procedure is scheduled. You may pick up your prescription at any time. If it has been several weeks to months since the prescription was called in, the pharmacy might have placed the prescription back “on the shelf”. Please call your pharmacy and request that the prescription be “pulled”. If you have any concerns please call us at 402-441-5600.
- If you have a history of chronic constipation please call Dr. Lee’s office (402-441-5600) so we may evaluate if additional bowel prep instructions/education is needed.
Bowel Prep Recommendations:
- Please follow only our instruction sheet.
- You may mix up the prep solution the morning prior to the procedure.
- Place the mixed solution in a glass that has a lid and a straw and place in the fridge.
- Before and after the prep solution is consumed (or if needed throughout drinking the solution) you may suck on a lemon slice to help alleviate the salty taste.
- Drinking tea, apple juice or another clear liquid after the solution is consumed, also helps alleviate the taste.
- Please continue to push the clear liquid diet after the prep is consumed. If you become nauseated, you may continue to drink clear liquids but may wish to drink slowly.
Pre-Op Information:
- If we have your email address, you will receive an invite for the Patient Portal for both Consultants in Gastroenterology (Dr. Lee’s office) and NSC. Accessing the patient portal allows you to have access to your medical records and allows you to complete your medical history for NSC. If you need help with your patient portal, please call 402.441.5600 for Dr. Lee’s office and 402.484.6600 for NSC.
- NSC will call you 1 to 2 days before your procedure:
- To tell you what time to arrive
- To review pre-operative instructions
- To clarify any questions they may have about your medical history
- To answer any questions you may have
ATTENTION: A pre-op history and physical is NOT required for your procedure. You may disregard this requirement in the communication(s) you receive from Nebraska Surgery Center, UNLESS you receive a phone call informing you otherwise.
Cancellation/ Rescheduling/ No Show Policy:
Unfortunately, due to an increase in missed appointments and last minute
cancellations, we have adopted a new “Cancellation/Rescheduling/No Show”
policy as outlined below:
We reserve the right to charge you a fee of $50.00 for any no show for a
scheduled procedure or for a cancellation/reschedule request that occurs less
than 72 hours prior to your procedure date. This fee is considered a non-
billable event by insurance so the fee is solely the patient’s responsibility
and must be paid in full prior to scheduling your next procedure or
appointment.
To avoid being charged this fee, if you need to cancel or reschedule you must
contact our office (402441-5600) at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled
procedure. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
Please check our website http://consultantsingastro.com for more information
and recommendations.
