Product Usage Instructions

Installation of Pedals on the Bike

  1. Apply a light coating of assembly paste to the pedal threads.
  2. For the right pedal, screw it in clockwise, and for the left pedal, screw it in counterclockwise.
  3. Use the specified tools to tighten the pedals securely.

Cleat Mounting

  1. Grease the fastening screws slightly before mounting the cleats.
  2. Ensure the cleat is mounted in the correct direction with the arrow pointing in the direction of travel.
  3. Tighten the cleats to 8-10 Nm.
  4. Adjust the cleat position after a test ride to find the optimal position.

Using Shoes and Pedals
Refer to Figure 4 for proper shoe and pedal alignment.

FAQ

Q: What should I do if my pedals have a rough bearing run?

A: If your pedals have a rough bearing run, they may need servicing. Refer to maintenance instructions for further details.

Q: How should I adjust the position of the cleats?
A: After mounting the cleats, take a test ride and then adjust the position as needed to find the most comfortable and efficient position.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • read these instructions carefully before using this product. If the instructions are not followed, the following can occur:
    • The shoe comes off the pedal without any action on the part of the rider.
    • The shoe is difficult for the rider to release from the pedal. Both can lead to accidents and injuries.
  • Do not use the pedals in any other way than described in these instructions. Incorrect implementation when servicing the pedals can lead to serious injuries.
  • Always ensure that the pedal axles are firmly attached to the crank arms each time you ride.
  • Loose, worn, or damaged parts can lead to injuries.
  • If the pedals are to be used on public roads, appropriate reflectors must be fitted to the bike.
  • Contact a specialist or the manufacturer (contact form on www.tatze-bike.com) if the following instructions leave any questions unanswered.

WARRANTY

  • this product is warranted under normal use against defects in workmanship and materials to the original purchaser for one year from the date of purchase.
  • The user assumes the risk of personal injury, product damage, or other damage when TATZE pedals are used in stunt or acrobatic jumps or similar activities.
  • This warranty does not apply to incidental or consequential damages, such as personal injury or other damages related to improper handling, imitation, misuse, damage, alteration, normal wear and tear, improper assembly, or maintenance.
  • If a defective product is returned for warranty purposes, the claimant must provide proof of purchase and a written description of the damage.
  • Other than this express limited warranty, no other warranties are implied.

Maintenance

  • pedals must be serviced if:
    • The rotation of the pedal generates noise.
    •  The pedal has a rough bearing run (e.g. if it is turned by hand).
    •  There is significant bearing play.
  • The bearings should be cleaned and relubricated at least once every twelve months or at least once every six months if they are mainly used in wet conditions – see Figure 2.
  • Damaged bearings must be replaced.
  • Replace pedals with damaged axles, pedal bodies, or bindings, or replace the components with original TATZE spare parts.
  • Damaged or badly worn PINS must be replaced.
  • Replace worn cleats, especially if their function is impaired or they are badly worn. A comprehensive range of spare parts can be found at www.tatzebike.com.

INSTALLING the pedal on the bike

The right pedal is screwed in clockwise and the left pedal is counter- clockwise.

  • Lightly lubricate the axle mounts with assembly paste.
  • Place the axle on the thread of the crank and tighten it from the other side with an 8 mm Allen key and a tightening torque of 33 Nm.

COMPONENTS

  1. pedal body
  2. pedal axle
  3. binding
  4. PINS

TOOLS REQUIRED

  1. Pedal assembly: Allen key 8mm
  2. PINS: Allen key 2mm or Torx TX8
  3. End cap: Allen key 6mm
  4. Hexagon nut axle: socket spanner (nut) 10mm

CARRYING OUT PEDAL SERVICE

  1. unscrew the end cap (1)
ATTENTION : Left pedal right-hand thread, right pedal left-hand thread.

  2. turn axle (7) against hexagon nut (2)
ATTENTION: Left pedal right-hand thread, right pedal left-hand thread.

  3. pull the axle (7) out of the pedal body

  4. remove the seals (6)

  5. clean all parts thoroughly

  6. apply grease to the socket (8)

  7. place the seals (6) on the axle (7)

  8. slowly push the axle into the pedal body with a slight turning motion

  9. turn axle (7) with 8 Nm against hexagon nut (2)
ATTENTION: Left pedal right-hand thread, right pedal left-hand thread (do not forget to insert washer (3)!)

  10. screw in the end cap (1) with 8 Nmfinal check: The axle must be smooth and firmly connected tothe pedal body!

CLEAT ASSEMBLY

The cleats are identical and can be used for the right or left pedal. The arrow on the cleat must be mounted in the direction of riding.

  1. Grease the fastening screws (2) a little.
  2. Use a 4mm Allen key (1) and place the screws (2), the plate (3), and cleat (4) loosely on the shoe.
  3. The center line of the cleat should be above the imaginary line of the ball of the foot.
  4.  First, fit the cleat exactly in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the shoe.
  5. Tighten the cleats with 8-10 Nm.
  6. Adapt the position of the cleat after a test ride if necessary to find the optimum position.

PIN-settings

1. the PINS should be removed if it is too difficult to click the shoe in and/or out. Use a TORX TX8 pit or a 2mm Allen key and slowly turn the glued-in PINS anti-clockwise.
2. if necessary, the PINS can be unscrewed further by 1mm in an anti- clockwise direction to extend them and thus enhance the contact pressure on the shoe. Make sure that this does not interfere with clicking in and out.

USE OF SHOE AND PEDAL

The screw for adjusting the release hardness is located at the rear part of the click mechanism. To adjust, use a 3 mm Allen key as follows:

  • Enhance the tension clockwise (+) for a tighter connection but more difficult to click in and out.
  • Reduce the tension anti-clockwise (-) for a less tight connection, but easier to click in and out.
  • Connect the shoe to the pedal by placing the cleat in the front part of the click mechanism and pushing the shoe down.
  • By turning the heel outwards (away from the bike), the connection can be released. Unclicking works best if the shoe is moved outwards with a little momentum and without pressure on the pedal. Turning the shoe slowly with pressure on the pedal makes it more difficult to unclip. The connection is also released by turning the heel inwards if necessary (only for emergencies).
  • If you have never used clipless pedals before or are still unsure, take your time to get used to the function. Make sure that the release hardness is at the lowest setting and that the spring has some residual tension. Sit on the bike and place one foot firmly on the ground. Practice clipping in and out first when stationary and then in a traffic-free zone until you are confident using the clipless mechanism. As even very similar clipless pedal systems can behave differently when clipping in and out, test each new pedal to adjust to the function before using the pedal in road traffic or off-road.
  • If you lose your balance, you may not be able to release the shoe from the pedal quickly enough. If you can foresee any uncertainty, release the connection to the pedal early to avoid this.
  • If the heel swings to the side when pedaling, e.g. in the pedaling stroke, the cleat can be released unintentionally. This situation can lead to a fall and subsequent injuries. This can be counteracted by adjusting the release hardness appropriately. Test each change to the release hardness on a flat area free of traffic.
  • Use the cleat supplied with the pedal. If other cleats are used, there can be no guarantee of safe operation.

IMPORTANT! The binding tension should be the same for both pedals to achieve an even effect when clicking in and out. The spring must have a minimum tension so that the binding rocker has no play. If the spring tension is very low, a strong pull of the shoe backward can cause a release.
