1. Introduction
The Cikananga Wildlife Center volunteer and internship program is open for everyone: Local and international students, travelers, and other individuals interested to experience and study Indonesian wildlife. The programs bring valuable support to the Center and provide the participants with an opportunity to experience the rescue and conservation of Indonesian wildlife. Participation is possible all year round based on acceptance. We do have limited capacity at the center so we sometimes have to reject applications.
In this guide we give you some backgrounds on the volunteer program at the Cikananga Wildlife Center. There is information about daily practicalities, pricing, preparation, your arrival and contact information. If you have questions after reading, please contact us.
1.1 Cikananga Wildlife Center
Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center (CWRC) or Pusat Penyelamatan Satwa Cikananga (PPSC) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization for the conservation of Indonesian wildlife. It includes, among other projects:
· Wildlife Rescue Center (CWRC/PPSC) · Conservation Breeding Center (CCBC) · Sustainability Farming Program (PPBC) · Wildlife Learning Center
Cikananga Wildlife Center was established in 2001. Since then it has been dedicating its efforts to the welfare and conservation of Indonesian wildlife and habitats. It provides facilities and man-power to rehabilitate confiscated wild animals and, where possible, reintroduce them back to their natural habitat. The center also provides a permanent sanctuary for animals that cannot be released back to the wild. There are about 500 animals ranging from crocodiles to hornbills and leopards to primates such as orangutans and gibbons. Mostly the animals have come from the miserable illegal wildlife trade or have lost their habitat due to deforestation. Most animals are endangered and often arrive at CWRC in a heavily neglected state in desperate need of medical care.
CWRC aims to assist the government in rescuing and conserving Indonesian wildlife and teaching the public about the correct care of animals. In these activities CWRC accommodates, rehabilitates and cares for confiscated animals, preparing them for a life beyond the illegal wildlife trade.
CCBC has the goal of breeding Critically Endangered Indonesian endemic species on the brink of extinction. The ultimate aim is to release individuals back into available safe habitats in their geographic range, this unfortunately is our long-term goal; with the rate of habitat destruction in Indonesia growing the captive population and creating satellite populations is recognized by CCBC to be just as important.

Beginning in 2020, the Cikananga Wildlife Centre is developing a sustainability Farming program focused on food production. The farm is a diversified organic operation, growing an assortment of vegetables and fruits, with produce provided to the animals of Cikananga. Additionally, the farm operation allows us to recycle all of the center’s organic waste, producing compost which we use to improve our soils. Moreover, in 2021 Cikananga started an agroforestry program by planting roughly 1,000 coffee shrubs. Once established, Cikananga’s sustainability program will be used as a model, to help local farmers transition to regenerative agriculture practices and promote habitat restoration.
1.2 Core Partners
The partners recognized here currently contribute large financial assistance to Cikananga Foundation and/or work very closely with the foundation on numerous programs. A complete list of sponsors can be found at https://www.cikanangawildlifecenter.com/sponsors/.
Badan Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA) is the Indonesian Government Forestry Department and has sponsored Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center since 2001. CWRC works closely with BKSDA assisting with confiscations, releases and conflict situations.
Chester Zoo has supported Cikananga Conservation Breeding Center and Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center financially and with technical assistance since 2011.
Mandai Nature has supported Cikananga Wildlife Center and Cikananga Conservation Breeding Center financially and with technical support since 2014 until present.
Tierpark Hellabrunn has supported Cikananga Conservation Breeding Center and Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center financially and with technical assistance since 2024.
Wanicare Foundation has sponsored Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center since 2009 until present and is key source of funding and technical assistance. Wanicare Foundation is the initial founder of the volunteer program at Cikananga.

· Cikananga Center also has an organic farm that produces healthy food for the animals.
· Volunteers will get the chance to help on the farm, either assigned to help the farm team or, when needed, as part of a group teamwork session. There is the ability to schedule extra farm time upon request.
· It is also possible to work full time on the farm for volunteers or interns interested in learning more about tropical organic food production and soil restoration. Please let us know if you are interested in helping the farm team as a farm volunteer/intern and we can arrange your stay to focus on this.

Please note

· On arrival at CWRC we will ask you to read our handbook and watch an informational video which includes the rules that are in place during your time at CWRC. After this we will ask you to sign our volunteer contract which confirms you understand the rules. Please note that we reserve the right to ask you to leave CWRC if we feel it is appropriate.
· We have a strict no-physical contact policy with the animals in our care. · You are not allowed to enter any enclosures without the supervision of our staff.
2.2 Are there possibilities for an internship at CWRC?
Yes! Our current intern classifications are Work Placement Intern, Research Intern, Veterinary Intern and Farm Intern. We are an Aequor licensed learning institute and many students have been attending this program as part of their internship over the years. All interns assist with the activities in the center as well as their projects/school assignments.
If you are interested, please see the Cikananga Intern Guide and contact us for further information. We can discuss your project ideas if you have something in mind, or we can help you decide on a project as well.

2.5 What do I need to arrange for health, insurance and traveling advice?
We advise you to seek professional medical advice on vaccinations and medicine before traveling to CWRC. We strongly advise you to follow international vaccination advice for Indonesia and consider all vaccinations e.g. Japanese Encephalitis. You may be asked to wear a mask or other PPE in order to protect our vulnerable animals if you are showing symptoms of illness.
In order to work in any part of Cikananga, as a minimum requirement you must have the following.
· Be fully vaccinated for CoVID-19 · Be vaccinated for Hepatitis A, B; Tetanus; Rabies and Typhoid (make a timely
appointment, some vaccinations need a booster). · Take a Tuberculosis (TBC) test (Mantoux or Interferon Gold) or an X-ray of your lungs
to prove that you don’t have TBC. TBC can easily spread to animals – our animals are all tested and TBC free, we would like to keep them that way! · We ask that you send us a copy of your vaccination card and the result of the TBC test before your arrival. · Please bring your own medicine. In Indonesia medication is not always widely available as you might be used to at home e.g. Paracetemol and Ibuprofen. · Malaria is NOT present in the area around CWRC, Dengue fever however is present everywhere in Indonesia. It is a good idea to bring mosquito repellent and appropriate clothing to reduce the risk of this. · For Dutch Volunteers/Interns please check Vaccinatiecentrum.nl as they are completely informed and cheaper than for example the GGD.

It is important you ensure that you have appropriate health and travel insurance before traveling. CWRC will not be held liable for any accidents, injuries, illness or broken/stolen belongings before, during, or after your stay.

2.6 What do I need to know about Cikananga and Indonesia?
· Cikananga is a rural agricultural village of around 100 inhabitants and is located 800m above sea level in the foothills of West-Java. CWRC is located on the edge of the village, it is possible to walk around the local area but can be difficult to get to Sukabumi
· The climate is tropical with day temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. Indonesia has wet season and dry season but throughout the year the weather can be unpredictable and change.
· The evenings and nights are cold, getting as low as 15 degrees Celsius. · There is a small convenience store about a 30 minute walk downhill. The nearest ATM is
at another convenience store 2h walk away. Staff can drive you for a small price. · Spots for food or other shops closer to CWRC are basic. For more substantial shopping
you can submit your shopping list or join the food truck to Sukabumi. · There is English, Indonesian and Dutch speaking management on-site. Most of the
Indonesian staff have a basic proficiency of the English language. · There is 3G and 4G signal at most spots around Cikananga. The office building also has
wifi, however this is not consistent and priority must be given to those working/studying. · You can buy your own tourism SIM card at the airport or in Sukabumi. If you choose this
option we recommend the providers Indosat or Telkomsel. · If you are staying longer than 3 months in Indonesia and wish to use your phone you must
pay tax on the way in to the country so the IMEI number can be unlocked for use. For more information click in the following LINK : https://www.beacukai.go.id/register-imei.html
2.7 Where do I sleep, eat and wash?
· There are 2 (Male and Female) wooden long-house dormitories. · In each dormitory are private partitioned sleeping areas with a bed and cabinet. · Toilets and showers are Indonesian style squat toilets and cold showers from a bucket. · Our social area is a big wooden viewing deck overlooking the beautiful rice fields. · Local food (Indonesian/Sundanese) is cooked by women from the village and is served
for lunch and dinner. – Vegetarian and Vegan meals can be arranged as can other dietary requirements – Breakfast you have to arrange yourself. · We provide a laundry service and daily cleaning of the facilities.

2.8 What kind of Legal requirements are there for traveling to Indonesia?
· It is your responsibility to check the latest requirements. · We can give general information and are happy to help if you have any queries, but we
are not experts on the requirements for every country. · A passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry is mandatory. · You do require a “visit visa” to be able to volunteer in Indonesia as a foreigner, the tourist
visa sadly does not allow foreigners to volunteer.
All Volunteers and Interns need a Visit Visa
· This Visa needs to be made before you travel, we recommend this process to be started 3 months before arrival in Indonesia.
· The E-Visa application will be done by our team in Indonesia. Please contact us for a list of documents we require to apply for applying for your visa.
· For the E-visa we will need you to transfer the application costs before we begin the process as per the rules of the Immigration Office.
· Although unlikely, once the process for the visa has begun your application could still be rejected following background checks by the Indonesian embassy with the embassy of your country. The costs are non-refundable.
· The Visit Visa initially permits your stay in Indonesia for 60 days. The costs for the visa is 150,-. It is possible to extend this Visa two times once you have arrived in Indonesia. Each extension gives 60 days, which means you can stay in Indonesia with this visa for a total of 180 days. Each extension will cost the same as the initial 150,-, which means a 120 day visa costs 300 and the 180 days visa costs 450,-.
· If this sounds confusing, do not worry! We can help you through this process.

2.9 What do I need to bring to Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center?
· Important: West Java is a very Muslim region, therefore, to respect local custom, we ask you to please wear clothes that cover your shoulders, chest and upper legs. This means no shorts, tank tops/crop tops, low cut tops or sleeveless tops. As we are located practically in the village, this applies to both working hours and after work hours as well.
· Lightweight work clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. · If you stay for a longer period, bring also clothes that are suitable for example a party
or a wedding. · Warmer clothes for in the evening. · A hat and sunscreen · Good Rainwear! It can rain very heavily during rainy season. · Towels, quick drying is recommended · Walking shoes with a good profile. · Wellingtons (rubber) boots and a good supply of socks. · Insoles are recommended but not required · Slippers or sandals · Working gloves are recommended for different types of work. · Mosquito net is not directly necessary, but many people like it so the choice is yours. · If you prefer, Anti-Mosquito lotion (DEET or alternatives) · Headlamp or torch with red light for observations of our Slow Loris in the evening. · Entertainment for your free time (books, games, laptop etc.) · An unlocked phone for use with an Indonesian SIM card, please refer to section 2.6. · Enough cash for the start of your stay. We advise you to change or withdraw money at
the airport, or change money to Indonesian Rupiah before travelling

3.1.5 Angkot Locally run minibuses in Indonesia that operating widely throughout the country. Angkots run accordingly to an exact route and passengers can stop the van anywhere along this route, the angkot is not required to stop at a bus stop or station. Conditions can be cramped and the driving style aggressive.
Only recommended for confident/experienced travelers.
3.1.6 Ojek A motorcycle taxi, this typically carries one passenger. There are two main companies (Go-jek and Grab) which have an application from which you can order online from your phone. This service is normally only available around the large cities. You cannot order one from Cikananga, but it is possible to get one to take you from Sukabumi to the center. However they often cancel if it is late afternoon/evening as the drive will take them out of the city as it’s getting dark.
There is also the traditional way, where you hail a taxi/motortaxi on the street rather than use the app. This is more complicated for foreigners due to the language barrier when negotiating price and destination.
Only recommended for confident/experienced travelers.
