SkyLIGHTS Vitria Flat Roof Window
Safety
Take the necessary and required safety precautions, such as safety nets and lifelines when installing from the outside, safety goggles, gloves, hard hat, etc. Do not step on the glass.
Falling from height
- When using ladders to go on the roof:
- Ladder in good condition?
- Set up correctly at an angle of 75°?
- Secured below and on top against moving?
- Don’t take heavy material with you on the ladder (3-point contact rule)! If possible, use a crane to lift the material.
- Do not lift material over the roof edge; use a crane to put the material on the roof.
- Roof zone: make sure the part of the roof where the skylight/barrel vault will be installed is safe enough, e.g. secure the edge (support system in the roof gutter that supports against the outer wall of the building, with suitable A B C category depending on the roof pitch) or use a scaffold so no one can fall off the roof. If the roof is not safe enough, always use a harness with lifeline (adapted to the fall height), attached to a suitable attachment point.
- Make sure the roof is stable and does not have dangerous openings or insufficient secure parts (e.g. corrugated sheets, …). Take the necessary measures if this is not the case: strengthen, use suitable safety nets below the danger zones, …
- Before making the roof opening for the skylight/barrel vault: make sure there are safety netsconform to the current legislation. The nets must be attached firmly and sufficiently to the building.
- When using an aerial work platform: always wear and secure your harness (mandatory)! Leaving the cage is forbidden.
- Never walk backwards on a roof, always walk forwards.
- Make sure there’s enough light in the working zone.
Low-hanging obstacles and falling loads
- Forbidden to walk under or within a radius of 1 m of a hanging or lifted load.
- Demarcate the danger zone below the skylight/barrel vault, in the building as well as on the outside near the outer walls (in case material slides off the roof). If the zone is demarcated, people cannot be hit by any falling loads. It’s prohibited to enter these danger zones during construction.
Crushing hazard
- All working tools are in good condition, provided with a valid CE label and all necessary safety regulations. These cannot be removed.
- People who use these working tools are educated for this purpose. Protections are always present on all working tools. They are in good condition and need to be set correctly.
Tripping/falling
- Safety is key and it begins with order and tidiness. Clean everything immediately, leave nothing lying around.
- Trash needs to be sorted.
- Be cautious with electric cables (danger of tripping/falling). Never walk backwards!
- Make sure there’s enough light in the working zone.
Sharp objects
- Make sure your fingers/hands are not pinched and watch out for cuts while handling skylights or barrel vaults.
- Be careful where you put your hands during the installation.
- Wearing cut-resistant gloves is mandatory.
Ergonomics
- Always lift loads correctly: bend your knees, move your feet instead of forcing your spine, lift as close to your body as possible.
- Parts of more than 25 kg must be lifted with at least 2 persons.
Lifting equipment
- • Depending on the size and weight of the glass skylight, we recommend to use appropriate lifting equipment for transport and installation. This is important for general safety and to prevent any damage to the product.
Personal protective equipment
-
Work clothes, safety shoes and helmet are mandatory for everyone.
-
Lifeline and harness are mandatory if the edge is not secured enough or if there are no safety nets below the roof opening. They are also necessary when using an aerial working platform.
-
Use gloves when handling skylight or barrel vault parts.
Safety instructions for the user
Provide these instructions to the end user or owner of the flat roof window.
Attention:
- Read these safety instructions carefully before use.
- Familiarise yourself with the controls and proper use of the product. Do not operate the product unless you understand the potential hazards.
- Keep the safety instructions for future reference. Also provide them to any new user of the product.
Using the openable flat roof window:
- Prevent damage and always close your flat roof window in strong wind, rain, hail or snow. Your Vitria flat roof window is not equipped with a rain or wind sensor and will therefore not close automatically.
Crushing hazard:
- Crushing hazard! Keep hands or other parts of the body away from the opening part!
- Keep nearby people or animals at a safe distance.
- Do not allow children to use the product.
- Never put your hands or other body parts through the opening part without first switching off the operating voltage.
Glass: avoiding thermal fracture
- Your Vitria flat roof window is equipped with well-insulating glazing with a laminated inner pane for maximum safety.
- Well-insulated glazing is subject to thermal fractures. A thermal fracture is a crack in the window that occurs spontaneously due to temperature differences in the surface of the glass and is not a product defect.
- Guidelines for avoiding thermal fractures:
- Place insect screens, blinds or curtains at a sufficient distance from the glazing
- Do not place heaters too close to the glazing
- Do not place large objects inside, close to the glazing
Repair:
- Should the product nevertheless become defective despite careful manufacturing and testing methods, repairs should be carried out by qualified installers.
- If the product is to be taken out of service for servicing, inspection or replacement of accessories, first switch off the operating voltage (applicable to electrically opening systems).

Tips for maintenance
- Regular cleaning of the glass flat roof windows is always necessary.
- Check the mounting and silicone seams annually.
- Remove stains caused by tar only with turpentine and rinse thoroughly with water.
- Clean with water and non-aggressive soap (no abrasives), always rinse with copious amounts of water.
- Clean the PVC curb or PVC adapter frame with PVC cleaner.
Transport and handling on site
Het Vitria vlak platdakvenster / opengaande uitvoering is reeds volledig voorgemonteerd op de opstand. Het product wordt op een houten pallet getransporteerd.
Depending on the dimensions and corresponding weight of the glass flat roof window, we recommend using suitable hoisting and/or lifting equipment, both during transport and installation. **Always place the glass window with pallet packaging on the roof.
**
Avoid heat accumulation and/or damage to the opening system! NEVER place the flat roof window directly on the roof membrane. Not even for a short while! Risk of deformation due to heat accumulation and/or damage to the opening system.
Please note: manual opening system protrudes at the bottom!
Place your flat roof window including packaging pallet on the roof. This way you avoid heat accumulation and damage to the opening system.
Skylight curb inclination
Recommended roof pitch:
The Vitria glass flat roof window is installed at a pitch of at least 4° to
25°. To prevent contamination of the outside of the glass and standing water,
we advise a pitch of 5°. The roof slope or the placement of the curb and/or
the adapter frame must ensure that these values are respected.
Fixing the curb onto the roof
The opening flat roof window is already equipped with a pre-assembled curb. For transport purposes, the curb is screwed onto wooden transport blocks. Remove the screws before placing the curb over the roof opening.
For optimal airtightness, we recommend also sealing the curb on the trimming structure to make it airtight. Screw the curb to the fixed roof structure through the indication line on the flange (wood screws 5.2×60). Start at 7.5 cm from the ends with a centre-distance of no more than 30 cm.
Installing the curb:
Always ensure that the daylight size remains the same over the entire length (and width)! A constant daylight size, the straightness of the profiles and the squareness of the corners are important to guarantee the correct functioning of the product and accessories.
Finish with roofing
The roofing should be pulled up sufficiently, so it rests against the top flange of the curb. For all types of roofing systems, we refer to the roofing manufacturer’s instructions.
PVC 20/00 EP(-S) curb:
OK: pull up roofing to under the flashing
PVC curb:
OK: pull roofing to under the flange
Wrong: pull roofing to over the flange
Polyester curb:
OK: pull roofing to under the flange
Wrong: pull roofing to over the flange
Metal curb:
OK: pull roofing to under the flange
Wrong: pull roofing to over the flange
Manual opening system (mounted)
If you have chosen a manual opening system, your Vitria flat roof window is already equipped with the mounted opening system. No further assembly or adjustment of the system is required.
Single spindle with eye
The manual opening system “single spindle with eye” contains a single mounted spindle, which can only be operated with a winding rod with hook.
Should it be necessary to disassemble the opening system for service purposes, follow the steps below. Disassemble the spindle by pulling the release pins outwards. No tools required.
Double spindle with eye
The manual opening system “double spindle with eye” contains 2 mounted spindles that are connected with a link rod.
If it is necessary to dismantle the opening system for service purposes, follow the steps below:
- Disassemble the spindle by pulling the release pin on the top bracket outwards.
- Remove the bolts at the bottom bracket with a wrench with a wrench width of 11 mm.
Electrics opening system – 230 V AC (mounted)
- If you have opted for an electric opening system, your Vitria flat roof window will be supplied with 1, 2 or 3 230 V chain actuators. The number of actuators is determined in advance and depends on the dimensions and weight of the flat roof window.
- In case your flat roof window is equipped with 1 actuator, the zero point of the limit has already been set correctly. If for some reason it is still necessary to reset the zero point, follow the procedure as described in point “Procedure for setting the zero point of the limit”.
- If your flat roof window is equipped with 2 or more actuators, these have already been synchronised and the zero point of the limit has already been set correctly. If for some reason it is still necessary to reset the zero point, follow the procedure as described in point “Procedure for setting the zero point of the limit”.
- An automatic fuse and bipolar control switch are not included and must be provided by the customer.
Electrical connections
- Before you start connecting the flat roof window, first read the general safety instructions at the beginning of this installation manual.
- Provide an automatic fuse in the circuit.
- Cables used must have a cross-section of at least 1 mm² and be suitable for the electrical load.
- DO NOT use switches that remain stable in either the open or closed position. The use of a bipolar switch with a stable OFF position is recommended.
- DO NOT use push buttons that allow both open and closed positions to be operated simultaneously.

Procedure for setting zero point of the limit
When your flat roof window with electric operation is delivered, the zero point of the limit is already set. This step therefore does not need to be carried out, unless in the following situations:
- If the window does not close properly
- If the chain does not slow down as it approaches the end point
- If a new actuator was installed
Before starting: make sure that the actuators are connected correctly. Consult the wiring diagrams for this.
- Press ‘open’ for a few seconds until the chain extends +/-2 cm and release the push button.
- Turn the knob on the side of the actuator to the “S” position. If multiple motors: set all motors to the “S” position.
- Press the ‘open’ or ‘close’ push button and keep pressing, the actuator(s) should not move. Keep pressing and place the rotary selector of the leftmost actuator on ‘4’ (= stroke 40 cm). The actuator(s) moves up and down briefly (1 sec) to confirm.
- elease the push button and wait for 2 seconds.
- Now press the ‘close’ push button and keep pressing until the actuator is completely closed.
- Release the push button and wait for 2 seconds.
- The zero point of the limit has now been set.
- Check: Open the window and check if the stroke corresponds to the desired stroke. If necessary: Move the rotary selector of the leftmost actuator to the desired stroke.
- heck: Close the window completely and check whether the chain brakes when the window is almost completely closed.
- If both checks are successful, your window is ready for use. If not: repeat the procedure.
