PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
“Metra Lock Driver 8” is used in different Metra Electronic Locking applications. It drives and monitors Metra Electronic Locks. Up to 8 locks can be connected to one Lock Driver 8.
“Metra Lock Driver 8” is not standalone product and must be connected via MEW serial connection to Controller. Up to 8 “Metra Lock Drivers 8” can be connected to single Controller. Therefore 64 Electronic Locks can be controlled by single Controller in Metra ELS System. Metra Lock Driver 8 also supports security features. In case of attempt of locker break-in “Metra Lock Driver 8” detects such event and initiates alarm message. It also detects cable disconnection from any locked Electronic Lock and activates different type of alarm.
Product main features are:
- Driver for 8 Electronic Locks.
- Up to 8 “Metra Lock Drivers 8” supported by single Controller.
- No external power supply, powered via MEW connection.
- Electronic Lock cable length max 4m.
- Alarm detection and activation in case of any Electronic Lock brake-in.
- Alarm activation in case if Electronic Lock cable is disconnected while locked.

*NOTE: Metra Easy Wiring (MEW) connectors 9 and 10 are internally parallel connected.
Metra Easy Wiring (MEW) connection
MEW Connection (3-pole cable) is used to connect MEW Modules to Controller. “Metra Lock Drivers 8” are connected to the MEW line with Cable 3 pole 0,25 mm2.
See also appropriate Controller’s Technical Manual for a specific wiring scheme(s). Further explanation is also in chapter 9 of this manual “Connecting Metra Lock Driver 8 to Controller
Connect the MEW cable to one of the 3 pole terminals marked “MEW”. For details see “Metra Easy Wiring (MEW) – Installation Manual.pdf”.
NOTE: Each “Metra Lock Driver 8” MEW Module has two 3-pole MEW connectors. You can use one for an incoming line and one for an outgoing line as shown on the photo. Both are internally interconnected. This way you can always easily connect to Controller and additional MEW Module.
ISP Loader
This connector is used by authorised Maintenance personnel only. It serves for firmware downloading.
CONNECTING METRA ELECTRONIC LOCKS
Up to 8 “Metra Electronic Locks” can be connected to “Metra Lock Driver 8”:
- Connect Electronic Locks using 6 pole flat cables.
- Maximum length of each cable is 4 meters.
- Cables from Electronic Locks with lower locker numbers must be connected to lower index connector. Locker number is increasing from left to right (blue arrow)!
- Mind ascending order when numerating lockers.
EXAMPLE: Most left connector (index 1) is locker with index “n”, most right connector (index 8) is locker with index “n + 7”.
For connecting Electronic locks use Flat cable 6 pole. Mind the orientation. Red side of flat cable place on pin1 of connector 6 pole.
When connecting cable to Electronic Lock mind the orientation of connector. The “nose” must be placed on upper side, as shown on picture.
The other side of Flat Cable 6 pole connect to Lock Driver 8. Mind coupling the “nose” and gap on connector.
MEW ADDRESS SETTING
# | description |
---|---|
1 | MEW Address DIP switch |
By changing the DIP Switch 1 pins position, different MEW Address can be set. To change between different pins positions, use a small flat headed screwdriver or similar object to push DIP switch pins to desired position.
ATTENTION
Each Metra MEW Module connected to the same Controller board must have different MEW Address setting.
Look up the code for desired MEW Address in the coding table. Set switches #1 through #4 to indicated positions, where:
- 0 indicates the corresponding switch is in OFF position (switch down)
- 1 indicates the corresponding switch is in ON position (switch up)
Coding table:
MEW Address coding rules for “Metra Lock Driver 8”:
- Each “Metra Lock Driver 8” connected to single Controller needs to have different MEW Address.
- Maximum 8 “Metra Lock Driver 8” modules can be connected to single Controller.
- Their MEW Address range must be set from 1 – 8.
- Always start with MEW Address 1 and connect to this Module from left to right Lockers with lowest Locker Numbers!
ATTENTION
MEW Address of the Device is obtained from DIP switch at power-up. DIP switches must be therefore properly set during physical installation, before Power ON!
POWER SUPPLY
The Device is powered via MEW 3-wire Connection from the Controller. There is no need for External Power Supply!
- Red wire … (+12 VDC)
- Blue wire … (GND)
Connect the MEW cable to one of the 3 pole terminals marked “MEW”. For details see “Metra Easy Wiring (MEW) – Installation Manual.pdf”.
SIGNALISATION LIGHTS
| description
---|---
1| MEW status
2| Electronic Lock motor operation
MEW status
Metra Easy Wire network (LIN) blue status LED 1 is:
- Blinking slowly in RUNNING pattern when operation is normal and Communication with Controller is established.
- Blinking rapidly when there is no MEW communication with Controller. Check the connecting 3 pole cable!
Electronic lock motor operation
Maximum 8 Electronic Locks are connected to “Metra Lock Driver 8”. When power is applied to any of the electronic lock connectors red LED 2 is ON. Normaly this light is off when no power is needed to Lock/Unlock any Electronic Lock.
CONNECTING “METRA LOCK DRIVERS 8” TO CONTROLLER
This chapter explains how to connect up to 8 “Metra Lock Drivers 8” to Controller as well as their MEW Address Setting. Up to 64 Metra Electronic Locks can be controlled by connecting 8 “Metra Lock Drivers 8” to Controller.
There are two basic topologies used when connecting MEW Modules to Controller:
- Concentrated
- Distributed
Concentrated Topology
“Metra Lock Drivers 8” are placed togather in the same compartment. Electronic Locks are then wired and connected also there at the same place. Total length of interconnecting MEW cable is limited to 10m. It uses:
3 x 0.25 mm interconnecting cable.
See Appendix 1 for detailed block scheme!
Distributed Topology
In case that “Metra Lock Drivers 8” need to be spaced up to 40m total length away use Distributed topology. It uses:
- “Adapter 3-pole”.
- 3 x 0.25 mm interconnecting cable between Adapter 3-pole and “Metra Lock Driver 8” max length 10m (blue, white, red)
- 3x 0,82 mm interconnecting cable between “Adapters 3-pole” maximum total Length 40m. (yellow, red, black.
See Appendix 2 for detailed block scheme!
MECHANICAL DETAILS AND MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
See also appropriate application manual for a specific wiring scheme(s).
Carefully chose the place to mount the device. Keep in mind maximal length of cables to the Electronic Locks (4 m). Lock Driver 8 must be accessible only to maintenance personnel.
Connect the MEW cable to the 3 pole terminals marked “MEW” and 6 pole flat cables to appropriate 6 pole connectors. For details see “Metra Easy Wiring – Installation Manual.pdf”.
NOTE: carefully fold the cable so that the output goes straight through the slot in cover.
Put the cover over electronics, to protect it against accidental short
circuit, humidity and dust.
Lock Driver 8 can be mounted on top of the lockers or into the locker. There
can be mounted on the inner locker wall or simply laid on the bottom. All
depends on available space and wiring configuration.
Because of different type of lockers, no mounting material is added. Generally double-sided adhesive tape or screws can be used.
If there is a possibility for the hanging cables to remove the cover or whole device, cables should be additionally fixed to protect against disassembling. For that purpose, different supporting utility can be used.
