engelman DE-18-MI004-PTB018 Ultrasonic Flow Sensor Instruction Manual

Application and Function

This flow sensor is designed for the measurement of the consumed energy in a closed heating, cooling or heating / cooling system.

Contents of the Package

  • Flow sensor with connected measuring unit
  • Installation kit (depending on type)
  • Installation and Operating Instructions

General Information

  • Please read these instructions carefully before carrying out the installation
  • Seals must not be broken or damaged, otherwise the calibration validity will expire.
  • Valid standards for the application of flow sensors: EN 1434, parts 1 – 6; the Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU, Annexes I and MI-004; and the relevant calibration regulations of the country in which the meter is used.
  • For the selection, installation, commissioning, monitoring and maintenance of the device observe the standard EN 1434 part 6, as well as the calibration regulations PTB TR K8 + K9 for Germany (and any relevant national verification regulations in other countries).
  • National regulations for the consumption measurement of cooling must be observed.
  • The technical regulations for electrical installations must be observed.
  • This product fulfils the essential requirements of the European Council Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC Directive) 2014/30/EU.
  • Do not damage or remove the meter’s calibration-relevant security markings – otherwise the warranty and calibration period of the device will be void!
  • To achieve measurement stability of the meter it is necessary that the water quality meets the requirements of the AGFW-recommendation FW-510 and of the document VDI 2035 (Association of German Engineers).
  • The meter left the factory in conformance with all applicable safety regulations. All maintenance and repair work is to be carried out only by qualified and authorized technical personnel.
  • The installation point (flow / return) of the meter must be observed.
  • To clean the meter (only if necessary) use a slightly moist cloth.
  • To protect against damage and dirt the meter should only be removed from the packaging directly before installation.
  • If several meters are installed in one unit, care should be taken to ensure that all the meters have the same installation conditions as far as possible.
  • All specifications listed in the data sheet and the operating instructions for the meter must be adhered to. Further information can be obtained at www.engelmann.de.
  • The meter has a lithium-metal-battery. Do not open the batteries, do not bring the batteries into contact with water or expose them to temperatures above 80 °C. Do not charge them or short-circuit them.
  • Proximate sources of heat, such as electric welding, are prohibited to avoid damaging of the meter.
  • Replaced or defective parts must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

Mounting of the flow sensor

  • Calming section before the meter of 3 x DN must be observed.
  • Flush the pipes in accordance with recognized technical standards. Close all the shut-off valves.
  • Open the nearest drain on the shut-off valve to relieve pressure.
  • Drain the closed-off pipe section.
  • Loosen the screws on the flange of the old flow sensor.
  • Remove all old gaskets and clean the sealing surfaces. Insert new gaskets.
  • Position the flow sensor correctly, taking into account the direction of flow (arrow on the side of the flow sensor).
  • Tighten the screws on the flange.
  • Please observe the sequence when opening the shut-off valves:
    • First open the valve upstream of the meter slowly
    • Only then open the valve downstream of the meter
  • Note: Failure to observe the opening sequence can lead to water hammers, which can damage the meter.

Installation in vertical direction

  • Meters that are installed vertically must be installed with the water flow upwards. If the water flow is downwards, the pipework may not be completely filled, and the measurement accuracy may be affected.

Installation in U-shaped pipework

  • If the meter is installed in a U-shaped pipe, the meter must be installed at the lowest point. Otherwise, air can accumulate in the meter, which affects the measurement accuracy.

Connection of the pulse cable

  • The output pulse value of the flow sensor to be connected must be identical to the input pulse value of the calculator. Observe the technical data of the flow sensor and compare it with the information on the nameplate of the calculator.
