ASK Ann

Retirement is a Beginning

Preparing for retirement is not entirely financial

How do you know you are psychologically ready to retire?

  • As a start, ask yourself four questions.

One, is your work meaningful?

If it is emotionally and psychologically fulfilling, if it gives you a strong sense of purpose and identity, then there may be a voice inside your head telling you not to retire yet. You may want to listen to it.

It can be tempting to see retirement as a “finish line”: no more long workdays, long commutes, or stressful deadlines. But it is really a starting line: the start of a new phase of life. Ideally, you cross the “finish line” knowing what comes next, what will be important to you in the future.

Two, do you value work or leisure more at this point in your life?

If the answer is leisure, score one for retirement. If the answer is work, maybe you need a new job or a new way of working rather than an exit from your company or your profession. An old saying says that retirement feels like “six Saturdays and a Sunday.” Fantastic, right? It is, as long you don’t miss Monday through Friday. Some people really enjoy their careers; you may be one of them.

Three, where do your friends come from?

If very little of your social life involves the people you work with, then score another point for retirement. If your friends are mainly your coworkers, those friendships may be tested if you retire. Creating a financial strategy for retirement is important. But there are also other important factors, including your physical health, your mental health, your relationships with family and friends, your travels and adventures, and your outlets to express your creativity. Building a life away from work can be a plus.

Four, what do you think your retirement will be like?

If you think it will be spectacularly different from your current life, ask yourself if your expectations are realistic. If after further consideration they seem unrealistic, you may want to keep working for a while until you are in a better financial position to try and realize them or until your expectations shift.

Creating a financial strategy for retirement is important. But there are also other important factors

WOW-Connect-DSM-Changing-Careers-To-Make-a-Difference-
fig-9

Ideally, you retire when you are financially, emotionally, and psychologically ready. Why you are retiring is as important as when you choose to retire. When you are motivated to retire, you see retirement as a beginning rather than an end. *

CHANGING CAREERS TO MAKE A Difference

” WE ENVISION PEOPLE ABLE TO LIVE BY THEIR OWN CHOICES WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT.”
-PROGRESS INDUSTRIES

By Cynthia Fodor

After a long career of crunching numbers for a big corporation, Sandy Ham decided it was time to do something different with her life. Something more personally meaningful.
“I felt there was something more I wanted to do than corporate functions and chasing the dollar. The corporate world is tough. I was looking for more personal reward in my second career,” Ham said.

Ham had built a career with Maytag and continued on with Whirlpool as a finance executive, working most recently to try to keep the Amana manufacturing plant viable. After 31 years, she retired but was not ready to put her feet up just yet. Ham was still eager to use her talents to make a difference in a whole new way. She stepped into a new role running a non- profit.

For eight years, Ham has been the CEO of Progress Industries, focused on helping people with intellectual disabilities in Jasper, Polk and Poweshiek Counties. She left the appliance industry for one that helps people realize their potential. “Because the “Industries” in our agency name can be a bit deceptive, someone once asked, ‘What do you make?’ We make people’s lives better. That’s what we make,” she explains.

It was not as if she left a tough corporate job for an easy one. Now Ham oversees layers of people, including a staff of 200, along with 300 clients they support. Add on 20 residential group homes, a fleet of 53 vehicles and all the logistics of 24/7 staffing. Progress Industries also supports people with disabilities in their jobs and helps them navigate the community.

“We help them get to their D’s appointments and the grocery store so they can do their own cooking. We help them manage their money.”
Progress Industries focuses on three primary areas with the goal of providing people with disabilities new opportunities for growth.

RESIDENTIAL LIVING SERVICES

  • Provide affordable accessible housing.
  • Services offer 24-hour support in four-to-five-person homes.
  • Services in 3, 8-person, Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF’s)

DAY ACTIVITY PROGRAMS

  • Community programs develop life skills to enhance intellectual, physical and emotional health.

EMPLOYMENT

  • Job coaching to obtain and maintain a meaningful place in the workforce.

“The goal is helping them be successful in helping themselves,” she says. “We do WITH them, not FOR them. Everyone deserves happiness, joy and pride in their lives,” Ham said.
One notable success story, as Ham shares, involves an individual with various challenges upon coming to P.I. Now in his late twenties, he holds a position at Hy-Vee. He is a different person today because of P.I., the programs we provide and the staff who dedicate themselves to helping others realize their greatest potential. He walks around with pride,” Ham said. A number of companies like Culver’s, McDonald’s and Hy-vee have opened their hearts to train workers along with the support staff at P.I.

While families can sometimes be overwhelmed when caring for a loved one with disabilities, P.I. is a valuable resource, and our staff/team becomes an extension of their family. The direct support professionals, like home health care aides, daily go in and address the individual needs of each person they support. Ham says there can be a high risk of burn-out but a high reward as well. She realizes the toll it takes on her staff and values each employee. “I try when I see our employees to let them know how much I appreciate them,” Ham says.

Melissa Butler had worked under four different CEO’s in her public relations role at P.I. Ham is her first female CEO. Butler says Ham has a way of seeing things in people and taking a chance on them. “Immediately she invested in me. She has given me every opportunity to elevate. She truly values me and my role within the agency.”

“I’m pretty Type A. I’m pretty organized. My folks are empowered to do their jobs. I’m there to support them. We problem solve together. We brainstorm. I’m not a hands-on micromanager. I’m very thankful for the team I have and for the confidence our Board of Directors has in me.” Ham proves it’s never too late to take on a new challenge. She is much more than a numbers cruncher. In her second career as a CEO, she is a true leader on a mission supporting people to achieve a fulfilling life in our communities with dignity and respect. Sandy Ham is making progress helping Progress Industries make a difference.

“Everyday we are thinking out of the box. How do we support individuals in our services and how do we train our staff better? I rely on my team to bring all the solutions for providing services. We kick ideas around. We can all agree to disagree on some things but in the end, were all headed in the same direction.” *

SURPRISING TIPS I WISH I KNEW AS A First-time Home Buyer

Buying your first home is unquestionably one of the major life events that you will remember for your entire life. If it were a recipe, it would include equal parts excitement, nervousness and independence. For that reason, it’s incredibly important to do your research before you get started.

Check Out The Neighborhood

  • Purchasing a home is a decision that will affect your day-to-day life for years to come. Take your time to research different areas of town you’re interested in, then narrow it down to neighborhoods where you could see yourself.
  • Shop at a local store, grab a coffee, take a walk or drive through the neighborhood. Try to get a feel for the area and consider whether the amenities that are most important to you are available.

Make a Wish List

Buying your first home is a big step, so why not take a few minutes to dream? Sit down and write out a Wish List of features that you hope to find in your new home. It may include:

  • Updated kitchen
  • Home office/ flex space
  • Ample storage
  • Fireplace
  • Outdoor space

Mind Your Credit Score

On the journey to purchasing your first home, ensuring your credit score is in good standing is one of the most important tips to manage. When it comes to getting approved for a mortgage, a stronger credit score will earn you a lower mortgage rate.

Set a Budget

Hunting for your first home is a new and exciting experience and it’s very easy to get caught with stars in your eyes. Before you begin considering homes, take a realistic look at your earnings, your current expenses and what you can comfortably afford. While your mortgage payment will undoubtedly make up most of your expenses, it’s important to realize that the costs of homeownership don’t end there.

The ongoing costs of owning a home can include:

  • Homeowners insurance
  • Property taxes
  • Homeowner’s Association (HOA) or condo fees

Maintenance and or repairs

Your mortgage lender will factor insurance, taxes, and HOA fees in when determining how much mortgage to approve you for. They will  also assist you with finding available first-time buyer programs that you may qualify for.

Health Care Insurance Choices

HEALTHCARE AND HEALTHCARE INSURANCE = Peace of Mind

If we have our health, we have everything. It does come at a cost however. Genetics play a large role in all of us, but how we treat our bodies also impacts results. I cannot encourage you enough to take advantage of the preventative care that is available through the ACA. We maintain our vehicles and homes better than we take care of ourselves. Put yourself as #1 so that the rest of your world can thrive. The medical expenses are another consideration. All of what is covered under the ACA for preventative is FREE to you through your health insurance. There are various ways we can be insured and I will outline the most traditional.

SMALL AND LARGE GROUP EMPLOYERS

Employer-sponsored health insurance is the largest source of health coverage for non-elderly people, covering 60.4% of this population in March 2023. Not all workers have access, however; some workers are in jobs where the employer does not offer coverage (usually smaller employers) and some workers are not eligible for the coverage offered at their job. Additionally, some workers do not enroll in the coverage they are offered. With the recent surge of lay- offs, health insurance becomes an important household topic.

WOW-Connect-DSM-Changing-Careers-To-Make-a-Difference-
fig-18

INDIVIDUALS UNDER AGE 65

People under age 65 can seek health insurance through the Federal Marketplace. The rates are subsidized by the Federal government and do not have to be repaid. The calculations of the rates are determined by factors that I will ask you at the time of the quote. There will be many plans to choose from, allowing you to meet the needs of your personal health status and your budget. Dental insurance is also available as an option. The process is easy when you use an agent to navigate through the steps of enrollment and payment.

INDIVIDUALS OVER AGE 65

Anyone that is Medicare eligible through a disability or aging into Medicare has several opportunities. Traditionally, one would apply for Medicare Part B (Medical) three months before or three months after your birth month, giving you a seven month window of time. I recommend starting three months before your birth month and requesting an effective date of your birth month. This provides an easy timeline to seamlessly transition from your current coverage to Medicare. In that process and after you receive your Medicare ID number on the ID card; we can enroll you in a Medicare Supplement and a Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) appropriate for your current prescriptions.

Employers can positon themselves in the competition of hiring quality employees by offering benefits. We are your go to. We can assist you with a menu of offerings and if all are proportionate to your budget and industry, you can have most everything a new hire would be attracted to. The hiring process comes with a price tag so you want to get it right before you start searching for talent. After a new hire starts with your company, you go through a training process, possibly a probationary timeline and hopefully on to full time permanent placement. If not you start the process over, which takes time and dollars.

If you have been laid off or need insurance counseling for any reason, we are here to assist. We offer health, dental, vision, hearing, short term and long term disability, long term care, life insurance of various types , IRAs (both Roth and traditional) and 401(k) rollovers. If you have needs please consider us for a free consultation.

Refining Habits for Better Health

Recently, a close friend surprised me by admitting she’s never had a primary doctor. Despite nearing 60, she relies on walk-in clinics, including for her high cholesterol medication. However, the stress of this situation weighs heavily on her, and she fears her condition worsening. Recognizing the need for change, she’s finally seeking a primary doctor. This situation made me realize that altering certain habits can significantly improve our mental well-being

PROCRASTINATION

My friend’s procrastination regarding finding a primary doctor is no longer sustainable. Prompt action is crucial, as primary doctors play a vital role in preventive care and mental health support. After some encouragement, she’s found a doctor who meets her needs.

DAILY SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE

Many of us experience mood dips on cloudy days. However, just 15 minutes of daily sunlight exposure can alleviate joint pain, headaches, and anxiety, while also enhancing sleep and bone health. Dr. Andrew Huberman of Stanford University recommends embracing morning sunlight.

PROPER BREATHING

Poor posture can lead to various physical and emotional issues, including reduced lung capacity and increased fatigue and anxiety. Simple breathing exercises, such as steady inhalation, holding, and slow exhalation, can alleviate these symptoms and improve overall well-being.

NOT ENOUGH DAILY PHYSICAL MOVEMENTS

Our bodies thrive on movements, yet modern lifestyles often involve prolonged sitting. This sedentary behavior contributes to numerous health problems, from heart issues to joint pain. Prioritizing daily physical activity, whether through walking, dancing, or other forms of exercise, is essential for long- term health.

BAD EATING HABITS

Fast eating, mindless consumption, and a reliance on processed foods contribute to various health issues, including cognitive decline. Opting for fiber-rich carbohydrates, lean protein, and mindful eating practices can mitigate these risks and promote longevity.
I’d love to hear about the positive habits you’ve embraced for better health!

My Alternative Cancer Treatment Journey

Seven months ago, I had a hysterectomy. Afterward, they found that I had Stage 3 endometrial cancer. You could have knocked me over with a feather. The oncologist wanted to start six cycles of chemotherapy, with radiation five days a week, for five weeks. Our son’s wedding was just two months away, so I asked if we could wait until afterward. I was told an emphatic, No. I immediately checked out mentally.

But then I thought of two friends, one who had healed her tumor holistically and another who was treating her colon cancer that way in Phoenix at Euromed Foundation. I called to talk to the doctor there, and he said to get there as soon as possible. I stopped to think about my choices. I usually see cardinals in my yard, but while I was debating, one came right to my front porch. I took it as a sign from my dear friends, Pam Dixon and Lori Bosley – whom I lost after brutal battles with cancer – to pursue this alternative treatment. Since, like most alternative treatments, insurance does not cover it, my husband Dave and Icommitted to investing in my health. The goal was to treat my cancer but help me still feel good. Another friend who treated her cancer holistically told me that God does not want us to be miserable while our body is healing. That was in the back of my mind the whole time.

At Euromed, they used insulin potentiation therapy (IPT). It is a low dose of chemotherapy that pairs with insulin. The goal is to directly impact cancer cells without damaging your immune system. I stayed in Phoenix for five weeks, doing two IPT treatments a week and two detoxifying treatments a week. I did have side effects – a couple of blood clots in my arms, and my ankles swelled – but that was less than I might have experienced with traditional treatments. It helped lessen the stress that my cousin allowed Dave and me to stay with her while there, which meant I could have my sweet dog with me. I can never thank her enough.

Gratefully, all my family and friends supported me as well – I could feel the love and the prayers.
Two months later, I enjoyed our son’s wedding in Wisconsin and felt fabulous the whole time. No one could believe I had had ten treatments.

Afterward, I sought help at another clinic in Downers Grove, Illinois, closer to home. Nourish Healthcare offers the same IPT treatment. My tumor was no longer showing up on scans, so the doctor wanted me to do blood and tissue analysis to identify my cancer mutation.

When the results came back, I did not understand them, so my husband and I scheduled a Zoom call with my new holistic oncologist. While waiting, I needed a distraction and turned on the Kelly Clarkson Show. She was belting out The Warrior by Scandal. I took that as a positive sign, and I still cannot get it out of my head! Sure enough, the doctor told us that the test proved that the treatments had worked – there were no longer cancer cells in my body! After that fantastic news, my husband and I are committed to sharing my story with as many people as possible. I am so thankful WOW Magazine can be my vessel.
