ASK Ann

WHEN 2 BECOME ONE,

Combining Household Finances

Whether you are moving in together or moving towards marriage, how do you transition and combine your separate finances?

There are many different

options when combining 2

Ann Merkley

different households. Each strategy has different pros and

cons along with challenges. Here

are some of the strategies to consider.

How or if you want to merge savings, bills, debt, etc.

There are several different strategies. Some couples decide to combine all their bank accounts together and pay bills from their joint account. Others keep totally separate accounts and split the bills evenly or proportionately according to income. I often suggest they keep their savings in a high yield savings account to get some growth on it.

Paying down debt is one of the first goals we look at. We put together an action plan on which debts to pay off first. Not all debt is equal, and we look at several factors.

How to put together a good budget

A good budget consists of several categories.
· Regular bills These are bills that occur each month such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, gas, etc. We usually set these up in an account that they can automate or bill pay as many of the bills as possible.

· Infrequent expenses These are often the annual expenses that catch people by surprise. Some examples are car registration, doctor/dental bills, vet bills, car repair, etc. We suggest setting up a separate account for these expenses so you have money set aside for them when they occur and don’t have to scramble. We add up all the projected annual expenses and then divide it by the number of paychecks. We then put that amount into a separate bank account that is designated only for these expenses.

· Emergency savings This fund is for any unexpected expenses up and above the infrequent expenses. Some examples would be a job loss, disability, large car expense, home or medical expenses. The amount held in this account varies by your comfort level. I suggest we aim for at least 6 months of salary. We automate this as well so that a portion of each paycheck is direct deposited directly into this savings account. This is often a good place to use the high yield savings account.

· Fun Money (Or I often call it the “cheesecake” fund) – It’s important to build fun into your life. I believe life is about making memories and we like to help our clients do that no matter how small their budget is. I compare it to being on a strict food diet….if you don’t allow yourself to have a small

portion of your favorite foods, you will eventually binge and fall off of the diet. The same thing applies to a good money budget.
When to purchase and how to prepare for purchasing a home
Preparing to buy a home is important. We focus on helping people increase their credit scores and pay down debt along with building their savings. We work very closely with bankers, mortgage brokers and realtors to set our clients up for success.
Different types of insurance
Building a good foundation of insurance is important to protect you and/or your loved ones from catastrophic life events and expenses. There are several important types of insurance you should look at.
· Property and Casualty Insurance Car, home, renters, and personal liability insurance. It’s important to have adequate coverage in case of accidents or lawsuits.
· Life Insurance – Life insurance is important to protect your loved ones from inheriting debt and allows them to continue their lives without any financial hardships.
· Disability Insurance Your largest asset is often your income. A 30 year old earning $60,000/year has a career earnings potential of over $2.1 million not including raises. It’s important to protect your earnings in case you are unable to work due to an accident or illness.
We enjoy coaching our clients who are starting out on their financial journey. Contact us for a complimentary consultation.

Summertime in Iowa! We all love strolling around Farmers’ Markets to savor the produce grown in our own fertile soil. Although Iowa has the finest farmland in the country, not all Iowans can afford the fresh fruit and vegetables grown here.
Waukee Area Christian Services Executive Director Melissa Stimple wipes tears from her eyes as she shares the story of a senior citizen who came to the Food Pantry. The woman chose a fresh tomato from the garden outside Westview Church.
“She said, `You don’t know how much that tomato means to

me.’ She had not had a garden fresh tomato in years and carefully made it last over several days. Another little boy was in awe picking fresh green beans at how soft they were. He had only seen green beans in a can.”
Master gardeners and volunteers grow chemical free produce to give to those who struggle to put food on the table. The need is growing, especially at a time when costs are sky high.
“The need is up 30 percent from last year. We’ve often seen growth around five percent, but this kind of growth from last year is our largest ever,” Stimple says.
Inside Westview Church, the Food Pantry helps provide a variety of meals. Clients step into a small grocery store to select a week’s worth of food. Shelves are stocked with soups, cereals and snacks as well as meats, cheeses and personal items.
Melissa Stimple has been here

from the beginning. She helped plant the seed to start a food pantry at the church 19 years ago. Since then, the idea to serve others has blossomed like a field of sunflowers.
“We asked how can we serve our neighbors? And so food is one of the immediate ways we can make sure our neighbors are nourished so we decided we should start a food pantry.”
It’s not just about putting a plate on the table. WACS also offers a clothing closet for kids from Kindergarten through high school. A school supply drive is underway right now to serve 500 children.
Stimple explains, “We want to make sure they are equipped to learn. Having new underwear, socks and backpacks, there’s just something about feeling good and dressed to succeed when you get to school.”
For those families who can’t afford a visit to the Doctor’s office, free medical care is provided as well. Part of the church has been transformed

into a clinic where anyone can get help, no questions asked. A team of volunteer doctors and nurses are on hand every Monday evening in the exam rooms.
“The goal is help those who are uninsured or under-insured who put off seeing a doctor because it costs too much,” Stimple adds.
For nearly 20 years, Stimple has pushed to provide resources throughout Dallas County, from workers at the Tyson Plant in Perry to new refugees finding a home here as well as those who have hit a bump in the road.
“It could be your neighbor. You don’t know what’s going on behind someone else’s door. A divorce, medical issue, job loss. One major incident in life can set you back,” she says.
After working as a one-man band for ten years, Stimple

now oversees a staff of six and an army of volunteers working to feed, clothe and promote wellness in their community. Her degree is in computers but her calling is to serve people.
“I always believed we are called to serve,” she says. “When you are helping other people, it fills you up more than anything. Everybody has a story and every story is different. I believe we should always err on the side of compassion and grace.”
“Find something you’re good at, cast a vision and get people on board. What do you find joy in doing? Build on those strengths. You are called to serve in some way.”

health care Insurance Choices

Mid Year 2024

As an independent agent for decades, I have attempted to provide

the support that you would

want and need as an individual

Debra L. Sears

or a business owner attending to the needs and wants of your

employees. During the summer

months, I take extra time to share some basics that may save you

money. Toward the end of the year, we can discuss your plan

selections for the following year.

Below are four ways to reduce costs and maximize health insurance benefits. I am using Wellmark for this article. But, as I have mentioned, I am an independent agent and have many companies for you to choose from. Many of the other carriers have these same tools. Please call me if you want help.

1. REGISTER OR LOG IN TO MYWELLMARK
Have you registered for myWellmark? When you log in to Wellmark.com/MemberLogin, you will find tools and tips to help you manage your healthcare spending. This landing page will have personalized health information right at your fingertips. This location is particularly nice if you are on vacation and are away from your local area.
Search for Health Care Providers or Facilities – myWellmark helps you search out and find in-network providers near your location. This tool lets you compare the providers and review the patient ratings and comments. You would be able to leave your feedback as well.
You can estimate the cost of care for procedures and services before seeing a provider. If you are on an HDHP (High Deductible Health Plan), you pay 100% of the cost upfront, making this tool better than any coupon you could find! You can also track and organize your family’s medical expenses. That enables you to see the health services that you have used and how close you are to meeting your deductible and out-of-pocket maximums. Keeping track will help you choose the plan right for your family’s needs when it’s time to enroll next year.
2. TRY DOCTOR ON DEMAND
Virtual visits with Doctor On Demand are low or no-cost for some Wellmark members. You will be able to check for benefit information regarding virtual visit details. This option is beneficial to families with two careers and children. Time is a precious commodity and is limited. If I can save you time and money, I smile.
With Doctor On Demand, you have 24/7 access to top-rated doctors from your home. They are accessible from a smartphone,

tablet, or computer. For your mental health, you can meet with a therapist or psychiatrist to fit your mental health needs into your schedule. The app you will want is DrOnDemand.com/ Wellmark. Even if your current plan does not cover virtual visits, they may still be more cost-efficient and time effective than a trip to the urgent care or the emergency room. The app is a very resourceful tool.
3. PRESCRIPTION DRUGS – SHOP AND COMPARE Access Wellmark.com/PrescriptionDrugs to review your prescription list. You can find information on mail-order pharmacy services that may save you time and dollars.
4. SIGN UP FOR THE BLUE NEWSLETTER Wellmark.com/BlueSubscribe will provide you with health plan tips and links to exclusive content. You can look at the Plan Smart section to learn how to avoid surprise medical bills. You will also see information about Medicare plans and retirement tips. Also, please call me if you need to secure health insurance after a job loss or change. I am happy to show you the options and premiums. Additionally, l can assist if you are aging off of your parent’s plan or aging into Medicare.

Post-Surgery Recovery & Restorative Yoga

When a patient has surgery, the recovery period can be long and challenging. In addition to plenty of rest and a healthy diet, it’s also important and helpful to keep your body and mind active in order to maintain circulation going and avoid depression that many patients suffer during post-surgery recovery.

Before starting any post-surgery recovery workout regimen

Lily Hou

a patient should consult with his/her doctor. Certain surgeries place physical limitations on what a patient can do.

Restorative yoga can be one of the best options for many patients who want to have a

very gentle start to explore therapeutic movements and gradual progress.

Restorative yoga is a gentle yoga practice that incorporates slow, supported movements and meditation to engage the parasympathetic nervous system and promote rest and restoration. Restorative yoga can be particularly beneficial for early recovery as they are slow and gentle, use props, and focus on relaxation.

Some very relaxing and simple poses include:

1: 5 – 5 – 8 Breathing either sitting or lying down. Take slow, deep and long breaths for 5 seconds to take in more oxygen, hold for 5 seconds and then slowly exhale both through the nose for 8 seconds. Repeat until you feel calmer with less busy eye movements and breathing no longer feels shallow.

2: Simple finger exercises or arm movements or movements with 2 – 5 pounds hand held weights incorporated with breathing. (If you have toe, foot, ankle, knee or hip surgeries).

3: (Reclined Bound Angle Pose) Hip opening pose lying in bed with bottom of the feet touching and releasing the bent knees to the sides for one minute for a few minutes with breathing techniques.

4: (Cat and Cow Pose) These two poses increase the flexibility of the neck, shoulder, chest, abdomen, spine and the hip. It helps deepen the breathing.

At restorative yoga classes diaphragmatic breathing and meditation are also practiced. It takes only 90 seconds of deep breathing to begin decreasing your heart rate and blood pressure and stimulating aspects of your nervous system, endocrine and

circulatory systems that promote relaxation and restorative. More importantly meditation can help the patient be more focused and mentally active and regain the confidence for a normal life.
The stick figures illustrate restorative poses to be incorporated into your post surgeries recovery routine based on your type of surgery.

INSPIRING Stories

My Alternative Cancer Treatment Journey

Two years ago, I had a hysterectomy. Afterward, they found that I had Stage 3 endometrial cancer. You

could have knocked me over with a feather.

The oncologist wanted to start six cycles of

BEFORE TREATMENT chemotherapy, with radiation five days a week,

Kari Elbert

for five weeks. Our son’s wedding was just two months away, so I asked if we could wait

until afterward. I was told an emphatic, No. I

immediately checked out mentally.

But then I thought of two friends, one who had healed her tumor holistically and another who was treating her colon cancer that way in Phoenix at Euromed Foundation. I called to talk to the doctor there, and he said to get there as soon as possible. I stopped to think about my choices. I usually see cardinals in my yard, but while I was debating, one came right to my front porch. I took it as a sign from my dear friends, Pam Dixon and Lori Bosley whom I lost after brutal battles with cancer to pursue this alternative treatment. Since, like most alternative treatments, insurance does not cover it, my husband Dave and I committed to investing in my health. The goal was to treat my cancer but help me still feel good. Another friend who treated her cancer holistically told me that God does not want us to be miserable while our body is healing. That was in the back of my mind the whole time.

At Euromed, they used insulin potentiation therapy (IPT). It is a low dose of chemotherapy that pairs with insulin. The goal is to directly impact cancer cells without damaging your immune system. I stayed in Phoenix for five weeks, doing two IPT treatments a week and two detoxifying treatments a week. I did have side effects a couple of blood clots in my arms, and my ankles swelled but that was less than I

might have experienced with traditional treatments. It helped lessen the stress that my cousin allowed Dave and me to stay with her while there, which meant I could have my sweet dog with me. I can never thank her enough. Gratefully, all my family and friends supported me as well I could feel the love and the prayers.

Two months later, I enjoyed our son’s wedding in Wisconsin and felt fabulous the whole time. No one could believe I had had ten treatments.

Afterward, I sought help at another

clinic in Downers Grove, Illinois, closer

to home. Nourish Healthcare offers the

same IPT treatment. My tumor was no

longer showing up on scans, so the doctor

AFTER TREATMENT

wanted me to do blood and tissue analysis

to identify my cancer mutation. When

the results came back, I did not understand them, so my husband and I

scheduled a Zoom call with my new holistic oncologist. While waiting,

I needed a distraction and turned on the Kelly Clarkson Show. She was

belting out The Warrior by Scandal. I took that as a positive sign, and I

still cannot get it out of my head! Sure enough, the doctor told us that

the test proved that the treatments had worked there were no longer

cancer cells in my body! After that fantastic news, my husband and I are

committed to sharing my story with as many people as possible. I am so

thankful WOW Magazine can be my vessel.

HOME Health Care

Celebrating 20 Years of Compassionate Care:

THE STORY OF IOWA HOME CARE AND ITS VISIONARY FOUNDER

Kimberly Weber
As Iowa Home Care celebrates its 20th anniversary, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the incredible journey of its founder, Kimberly Weber, RN, MS, CHCE, and the profound impact her dedication has had on the community. This milestone is not just a testament to the resilience and excellence of Iowa Home Care but also a celebration of the other enterprises Weber has established to provide comprehensive care solutions: Angels in the Home, the American Institute of Caring, and TICCEO.
The Genesis of Iowa Home Care
Kimberly Weber founded Iowa Home Care in 2004 with a clear mission: to deliver high-quality home health care to residents across Iowa. What started as a small operation has grown into a substantial enterprise, providing essential health services to 36 counties with offices in West Des Moines, Marshalltown, Webster City, and Ottumwa. The company’s commitment to keeping clients out of hospitals and institutions by offering personalized care in the comfort of their own homes has been a cornerstone of its success.
Under Webers’s leadership, Iowa Home Care has thrived as an independently owned and operated entity, distinguishing itself through a client-centered service model. The company’s caregivers are known for going the extra mile to ensure comfort and satisfaction, offering unique touches like complimentary aromatherapy and soft tissue massage to enhance the client experience.
When asked about Iowa Home Care, Weber stated “I believe in the power of home. I believe people are their healthiest and happiest in their own homes. Home is a sacred place. One filled with comfort, emotions, memories, and a general feeling of safety and belonging. When someone is stripped away from this comfort, they often lose their will to thrive and heal. This is why we believe in home health care. Allowing someone to experience healing in their favorite place is a gift, it is my passion, and it’s why in 2004 I founded Iowa Home Care.”
Expanding the Vision: Angels in the Home
Building on the success of Iowa Home Care, Kimberly Weber founded Angels in the Home. Angels in the Home is private pay company that offers both medical and non-medical care and concierge service to our clients in the comfort of their homes throughout the state of Iowa. It is Angels in the Home’s intention to provide clients with customized care that is catered around their specific need and comfort ability. Every decision is client-focused starting with hiring specifically for each individual case ensuring we match to their preference.
Elevating Standards: The American Institute of Caring
Kimberly Weber’s commitment to excellence in care extended to the education and training sector with the establishment of the

American Institute of Caring. This institution is dedicated to training the next generation of caregivers, emphasizing the importance of compassionate, client-focused care. Through rigorous training programs to include CPR, Certified Nursing Assistant Training, etc. the American Institute of Caring equips its students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the home care industry, thereby raising the overall standard of care available to the community.
Innovative Solutions: TICCEO
In her relentless pursuit of creating an “experience” for her employees, Weber also launched TICCEO, a company focused on serving the needs of her staff and her community. TICCEO is a small BISTRO located inside of Iowa Home Care that provides medical uniforms, Iowa Home Care swag, coffee, and light breakfast and lunch options. TICCEO has also provided catering service to several companies throughout the Des Moines metro area.
A Legacy of Care and Compassion
Over the past two decades, Kimberly Weber’s vision and leadership have transformed the landscape of home health care in Iowa. Iowa Home Care’s milestone anniversary is a celebration of the countless lives touched by its services. The company’s growth from a local home care provider to a significant player in the state’s healthcare system underscores the impact of Weber’s dedication and entrepreneurial spirit.
Weber’s other ventures–Angels in the Home, the American Institute of Caring, and TICCEO–further highlight her comprehensive approach to care, addressing various aspects of the industry from direct service provision to caregiver training. Together, these enterprises embody a holistic care philosophy that prioritizes the well-being and dignity of clients.
As Iowa Home Care marks its 20th anniversary, it stands as a beacon of quality and compassion in the home health care industry. Kimberly Weber’s journey is an inspiring example of how one person’s vision and dedication can create ripples of positive change, improving the lives of individuals and strengthening the community as a whole. Here’s to celebrating 20 years of exceptional care and looking forward to many more years of making a difference.
