Regulations
Accident prevention regulations describe the technical prerequisites to be applied and give recommendations in order to ensure safe current consumption from existing connection points at installation and operation sites.
Based on DGUV information 203-006, it is required to use e.g. a mobile residual current protective device (pursuant to DIN VDE 0661), which fulfills the following functions, when connecting electrical equipment to external outlets:
- Rated differential current IΔn ≤ 30 mA
- Switches all poles, including the protective conductor
- Undervoltage release
- No automatic restart after the voltage returns
As well as the following functions:
- Must be impossible to switch on if the protective conductor is interrupted or energized
- Must switch off if voltage is detected on the protective conductor or if the protective conductor is interrupted during operation
- Must not switch off the protective conductor if external voltage is detected on the protective conductor.
DGUV regulation 49 and GUV-I 8651 describe tools and protective measures used
for firefighting.
The generators of the fire department should be primarily used. In order to
increase the level of protection, we recommend employing additional protective
measures, such as a mobile residual current protective device.
If a different connection point is necessary in exceptional cases, it may only
be connected by means of a safety switch (differential current protective
device with residual current, protective conductor breakage, protective
conductor voltage, and external voltage monitoring).
PRCD-S pro: Latest generation mobile residual current protective device
In addition to the characteristics required in DGUV information 203-006, the PRCD-S pro offers:
-
It can only be switched on when the resistance of the protective conductor is < 1 kΩ
-
Detection of smooth DC residual currents > 6 mA*
-
Fault-free switching even with gloves
-
Clear display of the device status and possible errors by means of integrated LEDs
-
(depending on device type)
Detection of smooth DC residual currents
Electrical consumers and equipment could create smooth DC residual currents.
If these are then connected to a circuit with a type A residual current-
operated circuit breaker, these smooth DC residual currents can lead to a
malfunction of the residual current-operated circuit breaker.
PRCD-S pro detects smooth DC residual currents > 6 mA reliably! *
PRCD-S pro
Self-monitoring device
- Function test of the residual current circuit every time the device is connected to the outlet and every 2 operating hours
- Relay point test every time the device is switched on/off
- Monitoring of the resistance of the protective conductor
- Status of devive and error signalling by LED
Fault-free switching with gloves
Thanks to the latest electronics, the PRCD-S pro does not care whether or not
a user wears gloves or not. It is always possible to switch the device on
without a fault under any and all operating conditions. Even with gloves.
Undervoltage release
If the voltage decreases during operation, the device triggers switching off
the electrical consumers. The device does not switch on again automatically.
It is necessary to switch it on again manually.
PRCD-S: Proven through years of use
Compared to PRCD-S pro, PRCD-S is an cost-effective alternative mobile protective device for construction and installation sites.
PRCD-S is available in various configurations:
- Intermediate device for the user’s wiring with degrees of protection IP55 and IP68
- Extension with safety plug and safety connector
- Integrated in cable drum
PRCD-K: For specialized use
DGUV information 203-032 requires suitable protective measures before
connecting two or more electrical devices to a generator. PRCD-K meets these
requirements and serves to increase the level of protection.

Periodic inspection
The mobile protective devices (PRCD-S pro, PRCD-S, PRCD-K, etc.) must be
subjected to routine periodic inspections. DIN VDE 0701 and DIN VDE 0702
describe the procedure and DGUV 203-006 describes the inspection periods to be
followed, among other things. Measuring instrument manufacturers offer
suitable measuring instruments for mobile protective devices.
On its homepage, Heinrich Kopp GmbH provides an information sheet for periodic
inspection that can be downloaded for each device type.
