ASSEMBLE GEORGIE
AT HOME BY FOLLOWING OUR STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS AND YOU’LL BE READY TO PLANT IN NO TIME!
Filling GEORGIE With Soil
- ONCE YOU’VE ASSEMBLED AND PLACED GEORGIE IN YOUR PREPARED AREA, YOU’RE READY TO PLANT!
- Use perlite to fill the 11 container holes at the bottom of the plastic planting container. To make the perlite less dusty and easier to handle, lightly hose it with water.
- Once all the container holes are full of perlite, choose a quality potting mix (top tip: look for one with red ticks on the bag for certified Australian Standard Premium Potting Mix) to fill the remainder of the planting container to just below the top edge. Add a few handfuls of a complete organic fertiliser or pelletised chicken manure to this potting mix and mix it through the top 15-20cm of soil.
- Next, plant your chosen seeds, seedlings, or potted plants according to the packet or label instructions – keep in mind you can plant slightly closer than suggested. Once you’ve finished planting, mulch around the new plants to help retain soil moisture. Organic sugar cane mulch is ideal for GEORGIE – sprinkle it over the soil surface to a thickness of 3-5cm deep.
- Water new plants and seeds in thoroughly, but gently. While the new plants are establishing their new roots in GEORGIE – it’s best to water them from above for the first week or two. Once the plants have settled in, they’ll begin to draw water up from the reservoir and you won’t need to water them from above anymore – just keep the reservoir topped up with water as needed.
Replenishing GEORGIE’S Soil
AT THE END OF EACH PLANTING SEASON, WHEN YOU’VE REMOVED SPENT PLANTS FROM
GEORGIE, IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO REPLENISH YOUR SOIL.
No need to remove it all and start again! Instead follow the steps below:
- Remove the layer of mulch (pop it aside as you can put it back once you’re finished).
- Add enough compost (bagged or homemade) or premium potting mix to fill GEORGIE back up to just below the top edge of the container.
- Thoroughly mix a few handfuls of pelletised chicken manure or complete organic fertiliser through the top 10-15cm of the soil. Now you’re ready to plant your next crop.
- Plant your next crop and re-apply mulch, topping it up with fresh mulch as needed.
- Remember to thoroughly water your new plants so they have a great start to life!
GEORGIE’S Quick Start Guide
FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO BEGIN YOUR HOME GROWING JOURNEY TODAY.
-
KNOW YOUR POTTING MIX
Different plants prefer different soil but generally, the better the potting mix, the better your plants will grow. In Australia look for the Premium Red Australian Standards Mark ticks, in New Zealand look for Premium labelled potting mixes. You will need 175L of potting mix to fill GEORGIE. -
PERLITE CAN HELP
GEORGIE will work without it, but perlite improves drainage and helps absorb water. At the bottom of the Self-Watering Planter, you can add perlite to the round holes, before laying your potting mix on top. -
ADDING NUTRIENTS
For the best results we recommend adding a few handfuls of complete organic fertiliser or pelletised chicken manure to the potting mix and mix it well through the top 20cm of soil. Now you’re ready to plant! -
DECIDE WHAT YOU’RE PLANTING
Herbs, vegetables, berries and flowers can all be grown in GEORGIE. Check out our seasonal planting guides for inspiration or select your own plants using a growing guide for your climate. Layer sugar cane mulch around plants to help retain moisture. -
WATERING ADVICE
While new plants are establishing their roots in GEORGIE – it’s best to water them from above for the first week or two. Once the plants have settled in, they’ll begin drawing water from the reservoir, so you won’t need to water them from above anymore – just keep the reservoir filled with water as needed. -
