The technology behind the suspension upside-down cargo bike fork
Introduction
Welcome to the discovery of the technology behind the suspension upside-down cargo bike fork -the Cargoca. In this paper, we take a closer look at an innovation that has been specially developed for use on cargo bikes. The Cargoca suspension fork is characterised by its innovative upside-down design, which offers exceptional braking stiffness to meet the high demands and loads in the cargo bike sector. The individual features of this suspension fork are explained in more detail below and all questions relating to compatibility and benefits are answered.
Why we use the upside-down technology?
The upside-down concept gives the suspension fork high braking stiffness. This is due to the fact that the most solid part of the fork is located at the top near the head tube, where the greatest bending moments occur. The robust construction of the fork makes it possible to absorb these moments effectively. Another advantage of the construction and the special design is that the use of steel tubes can be dispensed with. This reduces the weight and improves the weather resistance of the fork. This is because steel tubes, even if they are coated, tend to rust in some cases.
Which materials are used?
The Cargoca suspension fork is mainly made of anodised aluminium and plastic. Aluminium was chosen for its light weight and high strength, which reduces the overall weight of the cargo bike. The anodising process improves the corrosion resistance of the aluminium, making the suspension fork more durable and resistant to the elements. Aluminium also offers high stability, which is essential for transporting heavy loads on cargo bikes. Plastic is also very light and weather-resistant. These properties make anodised aluminium and plastic the ideal materials for the demanding conditions that cargo bikes are often exposed to.
How does the suspension improve load capacity and safety?
When transporting heavy loads with bicycles, the frame is subjected to high
stresses. With unsprung vehicles, shocks and forces caused by uneven surfaces
are transferred to the frame unfiltered. This places a considerable load on
the frame construction and requires a robust design. The effects on fatigue
strength can be considerable. An illustrative example of this is the Baboee
cargo bike, which posed an increased safety risk due to frame breakage.By
using suspension, the forces occurring in the suspension element are damped
and the impulse acting on the frame is changed. The energy of these shocks is
partly converted into heat in the damping by friction, which reduces the load
on the frame. This not only leads to less stress on the frame, but also to
more stable riding behaviour. The modified shocks that act on the frame and
steering through the suspension contribute to improved stability and greater
road safety.
What are the advantages compared to conventional suspension forks?
Conventional suspension forks encounter problems on cargo bikes with steering linkage. The suspension travel is reduced because the steering linkage must be attached to the stanchions, which means that part of the intended suspension travel is lost due to the clamping of the steering linkage bracket. In addition, conventional suspension forks for the high loads of cargo bikes are often designed with steel tubes to be able to absorb the high bending moments in the bridge area. However, this results in a higher weight and poorer weather resistance. These complications do not occur with the Cargoca thanks to its design.
What about maintenance?
The upside-down design significantly reduces the need for maintenance work. The design means that hardly any dirt penetrates the fork, making it virtually maintenance-free. Only components and seals from the mountain bike sector were used in the construction of the product, as these are designed for the harsh conditions of off-road use. This leads to improved durability and longevity of the fork. As a result, they are ideally suited for everyday and urban use and ensure a long service life for the cargo bike fork.
For which types of cargo bikes is the Cargoca suitable?
The fork is basically compatible with all vehicles that have a 20-inch front wheel. It is also compatible with most Long John vehicles, for example:
- Riese & Müller Load 60 & 75
- Riese & Müller Packster
- Larry vs. Harry
