GENERAL SAFETY AND USE INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING! While operating this generator, several basic safety precautions must always be followed in order to reduce the risk of fire, electric shocks and personal injuries.
Read and understand the instruction manual before start using this diesel generator. Keep this manual for future reference.

General

These preventive measures are essential for your safety, always operate the generator carefully, responsibly and  considering that the user is responsible for any accidents caused to third parties or their property.
The generator may only be used by people who have read the instruction manual and are familiar with its handling. Before first use, the user must be properly and practically  trained. The user must be trained on how to use thegenerator by the distributor or other competent person.
This instruction manual is an integral part of the generator and must always be provided alongside the appliance.
Familiarize yourself with the control devices and use of the generator. In particular, the user must know how to quickly stop the appliance.
Do not use the generator if you are not both physically and mentally well. Do not operate the generator if you are tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication. If you have a health problem, ask your doctor if it is safe for you to use the generator before doing so.
Never allow the generator to be used by children,individuals with limited physical, sensory or mentalabilities, individuals with lack of experience and knowledgeof the appliance, or others unfamiliar with the useinstructions.
The generator may only be used as stated in this instruction manual. Any other use, which may be dangerous and may cause injury to the user or damage to the generator, is not permitted.
For safety reasons, any alteration to the generator other than the assembly of accessories authorised by the manufacturer is prohibited. The warranty on your generator will be voided if you alter it in any way.

Diesel fuelling and handling

Diesel is toxic and highly flammable! Keep diesel only in jerry cans designed and approved for this purpose. Always screw and tighten tank caps and fuel containers. Defective caps must be replaced.
Never use bottles or similar to remove or store service products such as fuel. Someone, particularly children, may be mistakenly taken to drink them.
Diesel fuelling shall be carried out before running the combustion engine and the generator shall be placed on a level surface. While the engine is running, it is not permitted to open the tank cap or refuel.
Refill and empty the fuel tank outdoors only. Before refuelling, shut off the engine and let it cool down.
Do not overfill the fuel tank. In order to allow space for fuel to expand, never add fuel above the lower edge of the filler neck.
If diesel overflows, immediately clean any spilled fuel. The combustion engine should only be started after the dirty diesel surface has been cleaned. Any attempt at ignition shall be avoided until the diesel vapours have volatilized (dry with cloth).
If diesel has come into contact with the clothing, it must be changed.
Keep diesel away from sparks, flames, heat sources or other ignition sources. Do not smoke near diesel containers and appliances with diesel on the tank, or during the fuelling process.

Electrical safety instructions

The generator produces enough power to cause electric shock capable of causing damage and injury to the user in case of misuse.
Do not run the generator or power tools in wet environments, such as rain or snow, near swimming pools or watering systems, with wet hands. These actions could result in electrocution. Keep the generator dry.
If the generator is stored outside without any protection against weather conditions, check all electrical components on the control panel before each use. Moisture or frost can cause malfunctions and short circuits in the electrical components that may result in electrocution.
Protection against electric shock depends on the circuit breaker installed in the generator’s control panel. If the circuit breaker needs to be replaced, contact the distributor to replace the circuit breaker with one having the same characteristics.
Use only insulated extension cords with electrical cables whose cross-section is suitable for the power of the equipment. If using 1.5 mm² cables, the length of the extension cord must not exceed 60m, if 2.5 mm² , it must not exceed 100m.
Generator transport
Carry the generator only when the combustion engine is not running. Before moving it, shut off the engine.
Always carry the generator when the engine is cold and there is no fuel on the tank.
When transporting the appliance, regional legislation in force must be respected, in particular that concerning cargo protection and object transport on loading surfaces.

Before you start operating

Make sure that the appliance is only used by people who are familiar with the instruction manual.
Check the leak tightness of the fuel system, particularly visible parts such as tank, tank cap and couplings. In the event of leakage or damage, do not start the combustion engine. Have the generator repaired by an official distributor.
Before operating the generator, replace damaged and worn-out parts.
Check that all nuts and bolts are properly tightened. It is important to inspect regularly the equipment in order to ensure safety issues and a good performance from the generator.
Before operating the generator, check if the cap is properly connected to the spark plug.
Make all adjustments and work necessary for the correct assembly of the generator. If you have any questions or difficulties, contact your official distributor.
To ensure that you run the appliance safely, you should consider a few precautions and procedures before start-up:

  • The generator is correctly assembled;
  • The safety devices are in perfect condition and function properly. Never operate the generator if the safety devices are missing, inhibited, damaged or worn out;
  • The fuel tank, fuel injection components and tank cap are in perfect condition.

Bear in mind the local regulations on the hours when it is allowed to use tools with a combustion engine and the permitted noise level.

While operating

Keep third parties away from the generator’s area of operation. Never work while animals or people, especially children, are in the danger zone.
The exhaust system reaches high temperatures that can ignite some materials. Keep flammable materials away from the appliance.
Keep the generator at least 1 m away from structures, buildings and other equipment during operation. Do not attach the generator to any structure.
Operate the generator with special care near slopes, ditches and wells. Place the appliance on a firm, level floor at a safe enough distance from these danger zones.
In case of nausea, headaches, sight problems (eg. reduced vision), hearing problems, dizziness and reduced ability to concentrate, stop working immediately. These symptoms may be caused by high exhaust gas concentration.
The combustion engine releases poisonous gases as soon as it starts running. These gases contain toxic carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas, as well as other harmful substances. Inhalation of carbon monoxide can cause loss of consciousness and can result in death. The combustion engine should never be started inside confined or poorly ventilated spaces.
The control and safety devices installed in the generator cannot be removed or inhibited.
During operation, the generator must never be lifted, pushed or pulled.
Starting the generator:
Turn on the combustion appliance carefully following the operating instructions. Using the appliance according to these instructions reduces the risk of injury.
The apparatus must only be connected to the generator after the combustion engine is running.
The input load connected to the generator must be in accordance with the generator’s capacity. Overloading the generator will damage it or shorten its service life.
The generator must not operate at speeds for which it has not been designed for. Operating it at higher speeds than those specified by the manufacturer will increase the danger of injury to the user and damage to the equipment.
Do not cover the generator while it is running. To reduce the risk of fire, ventilation slots and exhaust outlet should always be kept unclogged.
Do not modify parts that could increase or decrease the speed set by the manufacturer.
Use at the workplace:
Shut off the combustion engine if:

  • Whenever you want to move away from the appliance or if it is not under watch;
  • Before refuelling the tank. Only refuel when the engine is cold.

Stop the combustion engine and remove the cap from the spark plug:

  • Before tilting, lifting, loading or transporting the generator;
  • Before the machine is inspected, cleaned or before repair work is carried out.

Disconnect all electronic devices connected to the generator before switching it off.

Maintenance and cleaning

To carry out the maintenance tasks, we present you some safety rules. However, as it is not possible to encompass all possible risks during maintenance work, only the user can decide whether to perform the task.
When carrying out maintenance and cleaning work, changing accessories and transporting the generator, always wear gloves.
Before starting cleaning, adjustment, repair and maintenance tasks:

  • Place the generator on a firm and steady floor;
  • Turn off the combustion engine and allow it to cool down;
  • Remove the cap from the spark plug.

Keep the spark plug cap away from the spark plug, as an unintentional spark can cause burns or an electric shock. The contact of the spark plug with the cap may cause an involuntary start of the combustion engine.
Allow the diesel generator to cool down in particular before carrying out maintenance work on the combustion engine, exhaust manifold and muffler. It can reach temperatures above 80° C.
Frequently check the equipment, especially before storage (for example, before the winter period), regarding wear and damages.
For safety reasons, replace worn or damaged parts immediately so the appliance is always in perfect operating conditions.

Cleaning:

The generator must be entirely cleaned after use.
Clean the engine by hand (avoid introducing water into the air filter and exhaust). Avoid wetting the controls and other equipment / attachments that are difficult to dry. Water stimulates the appearance of corrosion and rust on metal parts and causes damage to electrical equipment.
Do not use aggressive cleaning products. These products may damage plastics and metals, compromising the safe operation of the generator.
Maintenance:
Only maintenance works described in this instruction manual may be carried out, all other works must be performed by an official distributor.
If you lack the necessary knowledge and resources, you should always ask an official distributor.
Use only VITO-approved attachments for this generator or technically identical parts. Failure to do so may result in personal injuries or damages to the generator. If in doubt, you should contact an official distributor.
For safety reasons, the fuel injection components (hoses, tank, tank cap and couplings) should be checked regularly for damage and leaks. If necessary, they should be replaced by an official distributor.
Keep warning and information stickers always clean and legible.
Keep all nuts and bolts well tightened in order to ensure a safe operation.
If any components or safety devices are removed for maintenance works, they must be repositioned immediately.
Long-term storage

Allow the combustion engine to cool down before storing the appliance in a closed compartment. During operation, the exhaust gets extremely hot and remains so for a few minutes after shutting down the engine. Avoid touching the exhaust while it is hot.
Never store the generator with diesel in the tank inside a building. Diesel vapours may come into contact with flames or sparks and ignite.
Store the generator in a dry area, with the fuel tank empty in a well- ventilated location. Avoid places with high humidity to avoid the appearance of corrosion and rust.
If you want to empty the tank, for example before the winter period, the fuel tank should only be emptied outdoors.
Store the generator in a good operating condition.
Ensure that the generator is protected against misuse (e.g., by children).

Technical Assistance

The generator should only be serviced by the brand’s technical assistance center, or other qualified personnel, replacing any necessary parts with original parts.

ASSEMBLY, OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Battery’s positive terminal connection

  1. Open the engine access door (11) and remove the positive terminal battery cap;
  2. Place the bolt on the disconnected terminal and tighten the terminal clamp on the positive pole of the battery.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

This generator was factory tested and calibrated. If the generator does not supply power at the correct voltage, consult authorized service personnel.

  • The rated power is the power that the generator can supply during continuous operation;
  • The maximum power, is the power that the generator can output during a short period of time;
  • Many electrical equipments require more power to function than that indicated in the technical data table, during the engine start-up and stop. When the appliance needs this extra power, the generator supplies the necessary energy for a short period of time. Check the maximum power of the appliance before plugging it to the generator. In case the power is higher than the maximum power of the generator, do not connect it.

AC sockets

When connecting equipment or an extension cord to the AC sockets (31, 32, 33) of the generator, the following points must be observed:

  • The appliances and extension cords are in good condition. Faulty appliances and extension cords can cause electric shocks;
  • If an appliance starts to operate abnormally, slows down or stops suddenly, turn it off immediately;
  • The power of the devices connected must not exceed the capacity of the generator. Never exceed the maximum power of the generator. The maximum power allowed by the generator, cannot be used for a period of more than half an hour.

Exceeding the time limit at full load will slowly overload the generator and even though it will not trip the circuit breaker, it will shorten the useful life of the generator.
To connect the appliances to the generator, proceed as follows:

  1. Set the current selection knob (28) to position 1 (230V) or position 2 (400V);
  2.  Make sure the circuit breakers of the AC sockets (31, 32, 33) are in the “ON” position and check the voltage value on the control panel display (27), it must show 230V / 400V ± 5% (50Hz). Only then, you can switch on theequipment;
  3. Connect the appliances to the AC sockets;
  4. Do not switch on the devices simultaneously, switch on one at a time, the higher-powered ones first.

Never connect electronic equipment directly to the AC sockets. You should use a current/voltage regulator.
Do not use floodlights or spotlights simultaneously with other appliances.

AC sockets circuit breakers

The circuit breakers of the AC sockets (29, 30) automatically trip in the event of a short-circuit or significant overload of the generator.
If the AC circuit breakers trip automatically, check that the appliances connections are made correctly, the interconnection cables are not damaged and the power of the appliances is not greater than the power of the generator before restarting the generator.

12V DC terminals

The DC terminals (36, 37) must be used for charging 12V car batteries or using 12V DC appliances.
If the battery is installed in the car or other appliance, before connecting the cables between the DC terminals and the battery terminals, disconnect the ground cable from the (-) terminal of the battery.
The DC terminals of the generator are marked with red and black colour to identify positive (+) and negative (-) respectively.
To charge a battery, clamp the positive (+) battery cable to the red terminal of the generator and the negative (-) battery cable to the black terminal of the generator.
If the terminals are reserved, the 12V DC fuse (38) will be damaged. Therefore, to resume operation, it should be replaced.
The DC system is completely independent from the AC system, so the absence of the fuse or the poor condition of the fuse will not prevent the operation of the AC system.
To disconnect the cables, first loosen the cables from the generator terminals to prevent the other end from coming into contact and sparking.
The batteries are highly explosive, keep them away from sparks, flames, cigarettes and sources of ignition and charge in a ventilated area.
Do not start the vehicle while the battery cables are connected and the generator is running, otherwise you may damage the vehicle and the generator.

Earth terminal

The earth terminal (35) is connected to the command-andcontrol panel (6), the non-current carrying metal parts and the earth terminals of each socket.
To prevent electric shock to the user, damage to the generator and the appliances connected to it, connect the earth terminal to the ground. To do this, use a wire with adequate capacity, as indicated below. 0.12 mm → 1 A
For example: for 20 A, a 2.4 mm wire.

Starting the engine

  1. Ensure that the AC socket circuit breakers (29, 30) are in the “OFF” position when starting the engine;
  2. Open the engine access door (11);
  3. Set the throttle lever (19) to the running position, to the right;
  4. Pull the decompression lever (26) while turning the switch key (24) to the “START” position;
  5. Release the decompression lever to start the engine and then the key.

Operating the starter more than necessary may discharge the battery more quickly or damage the engine. Always leave the starter key in the “ON” position during engine operation.

Stopping the engine

  1. Switch off all appliances;
  2.  Remove the power cords of the appliances from the AC sockets (31, 32, 33) and turn the circuit breakers of the AC sockets (29, 30) to the “OFF” position;
  3.  Disconnect the cables connected to the DC terminals (36, 37);
  4.  Let the engine run for 1 minute at no load;
  5. Turn the ignition key (24) to the “OFF” position;
  6.  If the engine continues to run after turning the ignition key to “OFF” position, press the engine stop lever (20).

Do not stop the engine using the decompression lever or if there are connected appliances to the generator. Stop it only after unplugging all devices.

In the event of an emergency, immediately turn the starter key (24) to the “OFF” position, and if the engine continues to run, press the engine stop lever (20).

Connecting the generator to a building’s electrical installation via ATS
ATS stands for “Automatic Transfer Switch”. It is a power transfer device required when using a generator as an alternative electric power source. Its purpose is to  switch/alternate between the public power grid and thegenerator, separating them without the possibility of simultaneous connection.
There are three sets of electrical connections, a multicore cable and earthing which should always be connected according to the needs of the power grid and model of the ATS in question.
As long as the ATS identifies the existence of mains electricity, it will remain connected to it. As soon as it detects a power failure from the mains electricity, it will give the order to start the generator so that it can start producing energy.
Fuel
The generator’s engine is designed to run on diesel. Never use contaminated fuel or an oil and fuel mixture. Avoid dirt or water in the fuel tank. Otherwise, problems may arise with the fuel pump and injectors.
To check the fuel level and top up the tank, the engine must be stopped. When refilling the fuel tank do not add diesel above the maximum level, the upper limit of the filter.

High altitude operation

At high altitude, the usual air–fuel mixture will be extremelyrich. Performance will decrease and fuel consumption willincrease.
If you always use the generator at altitudes above 1000mabove sea level, you should seek specialised technicalassistance to make the necessary adjustments. Even withproper fuel injection, generator power decreases by anaverage of 3.5% for every 300m increase in altitude. Theeffect of altitude on power will be greater if the necessaryadjustments are not made.
If an engine prepared for high altitudes is used at lowaltitudes, the air-fuel mixture will reduce performance levels and may overheat the engine causingserious engine damage.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Before any maintenance or cleaning work, place the generator on a level surface and press the engine stop lever (20).

Checking and changing the engine oil

The generator is equipped with an alarm system for engine oil level/pressure. The engine stops automatically when the oil pressure is low or the amount of oil in the sump is below the minimum level.
Selecting the right oil is extremely important for preserving performance and extending engine life. If you use lowquality lubricating oil or if the oil is not replaced periodically, the wear and tear on the bearings, cylinder and other moving components will increase significantly and the service life of the engine will decrease.
Let the engine run for a while, without connecting any appliance to the generator and check that the engine oil level/pressure alarm light stays on. If the light is or turns on:

  1. Place the generator on a flat floor;

  2. Open the engine access door (11);

  3. Remove the oil filler cap (cap with dipstick) (21);

  4. Check the oil level indicated on the dipstick;

  5. Add oil (15W40) until the appropriate level is reached;
    To change the oil:

  6. Place a drain pan under the oil drain plug (23);

  7. Remove the oil drain plug and empty all the oil;

  8.  Tighten the oil drain plug and top up with new oil;

  9. Check the level and adjust to the appropriate level.

Air filter cleaning

Never use the generator without an air filter, with a damaged or incorrectly installed filter. If this happens, dust intake to the engine will occur, causing rapid breakdowns. This type of damage is not covered by the distributor’s warranty.

  1. Remove the bolts, then remove the access cover (7);
  2.  Loosen the wing nut and remove the air filter cover;
  3.  Loosen the fixing nut and remove the filter element;
  4. Blow with compressed air until it is completely clean. If it is very dirty, wash it with water and let it dry completely;
  5. Fit the filter element and assemble the other components in the reverse order of disassembly.

Using a clogged and dirty filter will restrict the air flow in the carburetor affecting the generator performance.

Oil filter cleaning

  1. Loosen the fixing bolt of the filter cover;
  2.  Remove the fuel filter (13) and blow it out with compressed air until it is completely clean;
  3. Fit the clean filter and tighten the bolt.

Replacing the fuel filter

  1. Empty the fuel tank;
  2. Loosen the tightening clamps to release the filter from the fuel hoses;
  3. Remove the clogged filter and replace with a new one;
  4. Fit the clamps.

Check the direction of fuel flow, represented by an arrow on the filter.

Speed limiting bolt

Do not loosen or adjust the speed limiting bolt (22) as this may alter the performance and reduce the service life of the motor, as well as damaging the AVR (automatic voltage regulator).
This will cause the loss of warranty on the equipment.
If the operating speed is not correct, the AVR will produce a forced excitation. Operation under such conditions for a long period of time will damage the AVR.

Storage and cleaning

Preparing storage for long periods is vital to avoid problems and increase the useful life of the generator.
Storage
Never store the equipment with diesel in the tank.
Depending on the region and storage conditions, diesel can deteriorate and oxidize, causing damages in the carburettor and fuel system, difficult starts and clogging caused by particle accumulation.
If you have stored the machine with diesel on the tank, to avoid difficult start-ups, please follow the recommendations below considering the previous storage period:
Less than 1 month:

  • Follow the usual procedure.
    1 month to 1 year:

  • Drain all diesel from the fuel tank;

  • Run the engine until it stops due to lack of fuel.

Over 1 year:

  • Drain all diesel from the fuel tank;
  • Run the engine until it stops due to lack of fuel;
  • Change the oil.

Cleaning
Clean the generator after each use. Careful handling protects the generator and extends its service life.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

The packaging is made up of recyclable materials, which you can dispose on local recycling points.
Never dispose of combustion equipment in your household waste!

Waste such as used oil, fuel, lubricant, filters and wearing parts can harm humans, animals and the environment and as such must be properly disposed of.
Make sure that the deactivated generator is forwarded for disposal in a technically correct way.
Before changing the oil, find a suitable place to put the used oil. Do not throw it in the rubbish, do not dump it in water courses or leave it on the ground.
Local environmental regulations will give you detailed information on how to proceed.
You can obtain information regarding the disposal of the appliance and used oil from the legal responsible for recycling in your city.

The maintenance schedule shown in this instruction manual is based on normal working conditions. If the appliance is used under severe conditions such as overload, overheating, abnormal humidity conditions or too much dust, consult the dealer for recommendations that apply to your specific needs.
Failure to follow the maintenance schedule and precautions may result in injury to the user or death.

• The throttle lever is not in the start position;
• The air filter is dirty;
• Very low engine oil level;
The appliance is too tilted;
• The fuel pump and injector do not supply the required fuel;
• The injector is dirty;
• The battery is dead;| • Fill the tank with fuel; Clean the fuel line;
• Use new fuel;
• Set the throttle lever to the start position;
• Clean/replace the air filter;
• Top up oil to the appropriate level; Place the appliance on flat floor;
• Repair or clean ();• Clean the injector ();
• Charge or replace the battery;
Start-up difficulties or reduced combustion   engine power:
• There is water in the fuel tank;
• The fuel tank is dirty;
• The air filter is dirty;| • Empty the fuel tank;
• Clean the fuel tank;
• Clean/replace the air filter;
The engine runs irregularly:
• The air filter is dirty;| • Clean/replace the air filter;
The combustion engine overheats:
• Cooling fins are dirty;
• Engine oil level too low;| • Clean the cooling fins;
• Top up the engine oil level;
The generator is smoking:
• The air filter is dirty;| • Clean/replace the air filter;
Strong vibrations while operating:
• Loose engine housing;| • Tighten the engine fixing bolts;
No voltage at the AC sockets:
• The circuit breaker for the AC sockets is not in the “ON” position;
• The appliances or extension cords connected to the generator are faulty;
• The plug is not well connected to the socket;
• The engine was started with the appliances plugged into the AC sockets;| • Set the circuit breaker for the AC sockets to the “ON” position;
• Change the appliances or extension cords;
• Connect them properly;
• Unplug all devices from the sockets and restart the generator;
 No voltage at the DC terminals:
• The DC fuse is damaged;| • Replace DC fuse;

WARRANTY CERTIFICATE

The warranty for this product is in accordance with the law in force from the date of purchase. You should, therefore, keep your proof of purchase during this period. The warranty covers any manufacturing defect in material or operation, as well as parts and work needed for their repairing.
Excluded from the warranty are the misuse of the product, any repairs carried out by unauthorized individuals (outside the service center of the brand VITO) as well as any damage caused by its use.
