Decide what fixtures you need

Screw-in Hooks or Eyelets

These work well for our smaller shade sails, for casual, temporary installations or inside the house where there are no weather changes, for example in a conservatory.

Shade Sail Fixture Kits

For our larger sails, or for more permanent shade sail installations, we recommend using shade sail fixture kits, which include pad eyes, turnbuckles, and carabiners. These will help provide a more secure and tensioned structure. You can find our shade sail fixture kits in our store or by searching for ASIN B07L3X29Q9

Measure the area

Measure the area to make sure your new shade sail will fit

The measurements given for our shade sails are the widest part, tip to tip and include the D Rings in each corner. You will also need to measure any fitments or hooks you will be using to install the sail, and make sure you have made allowances for angling and pulling the shade sail as tight as possible. You can allow between 10cms and 75cms for tensioning depending on the size of the sail.

Space Needed

To help with your measurements, here are the sizes of our Clara Shade Sails Turnbuckles, Pad Eyes and Carabiners (Sold Separately) We do include with each sail 1.5m lengths of nylon rope for each D Ring, however, if you need that extra length, you can purchase longer rope or some of our customers use steel rope for more strength. You can see examples of this in our Customer Gallery and also get further inspiration for different ways to install shade sails .Clara-Sun-Shade-Sail-Triangle-3-6m-White-fig \(5\)

Do you need posts to fix your sail to

Should you not have enough fixing points for your installation, you can use metal or wooden fence or pergola type posts that can be purchased from any DIY store or wood merchants. A diameter of 125mm for round poles/posts, and 125mm x 125mm for a square pole/post would be a good minimum size. Based on the length of the sail, plus your fixtures/hook length, measure from your other fixed points, and dig a suitably deep hole for you pole or post. Make sure your pole or post is fixed securely in the ground, using a mixture of gravel and concrete to keep the pole or post in place and to stop any movement.

Angle and tension your sail

For external sails, if you are planning on using as rain cover as well as sun protection, to avoid rain water pooling, you will need to angle your sail so that: Triangle Sails have at least one corner that is at an angle of 20-30 degrees lower than the others. Rectangle and Square Sails have two corners that is at an angle of 20-30 degrees lower than the others. Keep this in mind when you are working out the length of any posts you will be setting up. Allowing for the higher and lower corners, decide where your fixing points need to be. If you are using screw in hooks or eyelets – fasten the sail using the cord provided, making sure you pull the ropes as tight as possible. If you are planning on using the sail in a conservatory, or you plan to take the sail down after each use, you can simply install by attaching the D rings in each corner to the hooks you have fitted. If you are using shade sail fixtures – attach the pad eyes to your posts or brickwork (We recommend screws that are a minimum of 2.5cm long). If you are fixing to bricks or masonry, you will need to use suitable raw plugs. Once fitted, clip the sail corners on using the carabiner(s), and connect the turnbuckle(s), turning to tighten. If you have a bit more space between your sail and fixing point, you can always use the rope provided, or purchase longer rope.

IMPORTANT: When attaching your sail, you need to make sure that the seams and Clara labels are facing down, so the waterproof side is facing up. The sail will need to be pulled as tight as possible, so the material in the centre and around the edges is taut. Any sagging will allow water to collect, which could lead to water coming through the seams or stretching the material. PLEASE ALSO NOTE, should there be damp in the air, for example mist, fog, morning dew or rain that is coming in at an angle, the sail can’t stop water or damp coming in from the sides. This shade sail installation is a great example of how taut and angled the shade sail should be.Clara-Sun-Shade-Sail-Triangle-3-6m-
