About This Manual
This manual is a high-level overview designed to familiarise the installer with the communication interface/PBMS tools enabling the installer to view the internal data of the battery and to facilitate firmware updates.
PC Interface Communication cables
The RS232 interface RJ11 plug port is used only for connecting a PC to the battery for firmware updates, settings updates, real-time battery data monitoring, and troubleshooting. These functions are reserved for Freedom Won technicians or authorised service centres.
Communication Connection:
The figures below show the RJ11 connector (left) and a DB9 connector (right). The table below shows the pinouts for the RJ11 plug with the corresponding DB9 pinout used for most RS232 to USB adapters.
RJ11 to DB9 Connections
No.| RJ11| DB9| Signal
1| Pin 1| Not connected| Not connected
2| Pin 2| Not connected| Not connected
3| Pin 3| Pin 2| TX
4| Pin 4| Pin 3| RX
5| Pin 5| Pin5| GND
6| Pin 6| Not connected| Not connected
Pin 1 and Pin 2 on the RJ 11 connector are not connected to anything, while Pin 3, Pin 4, and Pin 5 are connected to Pin 2, Pin 3 and Pin 5 on the DB9 female plug respectively of the RS232 to USB adapter if this adapter is used.
The figure below is of a RJ11 cable with a USB Type A connector, which is an alternative to using a DB9 RS232 to USB adapter.
- Connect the RJ11 cable (Image 1) seen in the above figure to the eTower.
- The male USB Type A is then plugged into the laptop’s USB port (Image 4).
Cable Verification:
- Connect the RJ 11 to the RS232 port on the eTower and connect the female DB9 to the male DB9. Then, connect the USB plug to the USB port on your laptop.
You should be able to see the new COM port under the device manager tab as shown in the picture below:
