For single patient use only. Make sure there are no foreign objects in the mouthpiece or the device.
Contents: Threshold PEP positive expiratory pressure device Instructions for use Therapy diary
- Turn the control knob (Fig. 1A) to align the red edge of the pressure indicator (Fig. 1 B) to the setting prescribed by your physician. A higher number equals greater effort. Attach mouthpiece firmly.
- Put a nose clip on your nose and breathe through your mouth.
- Seal lips around the mouthpiece, take a full breath in, and breathe out 2 or 3 times longer than you breathe in. Continue this pattern for 10-20 breaths (Fig. 3).
- Remove the mouthpiece from the mouth and perform 2-3 ‘huf coughs.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 approximately 4-6 times or until your therapy has lasted for about 10-20 minutes, or until secretions have been cleared. Therapy should be performed 2-4 times per day as needed or as instructed by your physician.
Important :
Training should be consistent and ongoing. Record readings in the therapy
diary.
Cleaning instructions
Wash in warm soapy water after each use. Flush all parts with clear water.
Shake out excess water and air dry.
DO NOT BOIL OR HEAT.
****ANY CHANGE IN THE SETTING IS DONE ONLY AS DIRECTED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN. IF YOU FEEL PAIN, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, OR NOTICE THAT YOUR PULSE RATE HAS INCREASED DRAMATICALLY, STOP YOUR SESSION AND NOTIFY YOUR PHYSICIAN.
Intended use
A PEP device is a medical device designed to provide positive expiratory pressure to the airways using a resistive load.
Indications for use
When used with the “huff’ coughing technique, Threshold PEP therapy will
help you remove mucus from your airways, reduce the air that may be trapped in
your airways, keep your airways open and clear of mucus, and improve the
delivery of your bronchodilator medication if you are receiving bronchial
hygiene therapy.
‘Huff coughing:
— Remove Threshold PEP from mouth
—Take in a slow, deep breath
— Hold for 1-3 seconds
— Exhale in short, quick forced exhalations
Note for physicians and physiotherapists
Threshold PEP provides positive expiratory pressure (PEP) therapy for patients
who have the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis,
cystic fibrosis, atelectasis, or other conditions producing retained
secretions. PEP therapy, combined with forced expiratory technique ‘buff
coughing, may be used for airway clearance, bronchial hygiene, or as an
alternative to conventional chest physical therapy (CPT), and pursed-lip
breathing. Improves bronchodilation when used in combination with respiratory
drug delivery via nebulizer or MCI spacer devices. Choose a setting that
allows the patient to produce an inspiratory to the expiratory ratio of 1:3 to
1:4 during inhalation of a breath larger than normal tidal volume and
exhalation to functional residual capacity (FRQ. You will know your patients
are overcoming the resistance of the valve and performing the therapy at the
pressure you’ve set when air can be heard flowing through the device. If your
patients require a mask to correctly perform PEP therapy, any mask with a
standard 22mm female connector can be attached.
