Make calls over Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi calling expands your coverage in places where the cellular network isn’t as strong. Google Fi will route your call over whichever network we determine will give you the best experience. So even if you’re connected to Wi-Fi, your call might go over cellular.

We recommend connecting to Wi-Fi whenever it’s available and always keeping your Wi-Fi turned on. Set your phone to automatically connect to open networks that we’ve verified as fast and reliable.

How to make a call over Wi-Fi

If you have a Designed for Fi phone, just make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi, and make a call like you normally would using the phone dialer.

For information about which Compatible with Fi devices can make Wi-Fi calls, refer to Use your own phone with Google Fi.

When you make a call:

  • If both Wi-Fi and cellular are available: Fi will route your call over whichever one gives you the best experience.
  • If you start a call on Wi-Fi and then your connection weakens or drops: Google Fi automatically continues your call over a cellular network if one is available.

Tip : If you still have trouble making Wi-Fi calls, make sure the Carrier Services app is updated. To check, search for carrier services in Google Play, and tap Update. This may also help access the Wi-Fi calling option in the device.

To use Wi-Fi only, turn on Airplane mode then Wi-Fi. Your phone won’t connect to cellular while in Airplane mode. Remember to turn off Airplane mode  when you’re not on Wi-Fi anymore.

Check if your call is going over Wi-Fi

If your call is connected over Wi-Fi, at the top of the screen you’ll see Wi- Fi and the name of the network you’re connected to.

Wi-Fi calling while outside the U.S.

In almost all places you go in the world, you can make a call using Wi-Fi. The rates for making Wi-Fi calls depend on the country you are calling. These rates are the same as when you’re calling from the U.S.

You’re not charged for calls to U.S. numbers over Wi-Fi—they’re included in your plan.

Tip: Before traveling abroad, confirm if the country you plan to visit blocks Wi-Fi calls.

Make calls on Google Home

You can use your Google Home to make phone calls. With Google Fi, you can also show your number on recipients’ Caller IDs and make international calls at listed rates.
