Quick start.

Keypad can be used as a primary or secondary controller. This devices a plenty of complex use cases while this section will explain how Keypad can be used as both a stand alone Z-Wave Network or as a Secondary controller to another Z-Wave network.

Product Usage.

Keypad can operate in two different modes. The mode is chosen the way the device is included into a Z-Wave network:

  1. Stand Alone Mode. In this case Keypad acts as the primary network controller and will include other devices such as e.g. a strike lock control or a door bell. No other central controller is needed. The management of user codes is done using Keypad itself.
  2. Network Mode. Keypad is included as additional device into an exiting network. In Z-Wave terms it will then act as inclusion (secondary) controller. It will send commands to a central controller and is managed by this controller. In this mode the device can still directly control door locks but it can also be used to trigger scenes in a central controller.

Primary Controller usage (Stand Alone Mode).

Keypad as a stand alone controller is to be used as a method to control your Z-Wave door locks and other Indicator devices (ie. light switches, Door bells, etc).

There are 2 control groups:

  • Door Locks. (Group 2)
  • Indicator devices (Group 3).

Keypad will automatically sort out your devices that you pair to Keypad between these 2 groups as you pair them. You are allow to pair up to 10 devices for each group.

Association Groups.

Group Association is a specific function in Z-Wave that allows you to tell Keypad who it can speak to. Some devices may only have 1 group association meant for the gateway, or multiple group associations that can be used for specific events. This type of function isn’t used too often, but when it is available, you may be able to use it to directly communicate to Z-Wave devices instead of controlling a scene within a gateway which can have unforeseen delays.

Some gateways have the ability to set Group Associations to devices that have these special events and functions. Typically this is used to allow your gateway to update the status of Keypad instantly.

By default, your primary gateway should have been associated to Keypad automatically during the pairing of your Switch. For any case you have a Secondary Z-Wave Controller, you’ll need to associate it to your Keypad in order for your secondary controller to update its status.
