Dad
Thank you for helping me dig the wood out of the uniquely organized scrap standby pile in your garage, and for your invaluable advice and guidance with this build.

Thank you for supplying encouragement and unwavering enthusiasm, as well as endless cups of tea to help fuel product development.
Also for being perhaps the only person who seemed to understand what I was going to build from the very start!

Holly
Thank you to the sister who never stops, who has endless energy and imagination and whose impeccable taste in music helped inspire this project.

Dougie
Thank you to the best brother-in-law who planted this idea in my head when he said “Music is a huge deal”

Setting Up Your Smart Turntable

  1. Plugin the AC power cable
to the back of the turntable.

Up

Lift the lid of the turntable from the front.
It should ‘click’ into position once open and stay supported.
(If the latch doesn’t click into place automatically, you can press it into place manually)

turntable3Turn the main power switch on the right-hand side of the turntable to the ON position.
It will take a few moments for the turntable to power up.
It might beep a couple of times and the screen will show various patterns until it’s ready to use.

Wifi

This step will only need to be completed once as the device will automatically connect to the same Wifi network again in the future.

Raspberry Pi HD-001 Smart Turntable User Manual - Connecting to
Wifi

1.Plugin a USB keyboard and mouse into the two USB sockets on the back of the turntable.

2. Lift off the vinyl from the record deck to reveal the full display.
The record is not attached to the surface and should lift off easily.
3.Press ALT + F4 on the keyboard to reveal the desktop interface on the display.
4. Click the Wifi icon in the top-right of the screen.
5.Select your Wifi network, enter your Wifi password and click connect.
6.Now that you have connected to Wifi, you can restart and begin using your Smart Turntable. Restart by clicking the small raspberry icon in the top left of the display, and selecting ‘Shut Down’.

From now on, your Smart Turntable should connect to your Wifi automatically.
If you change your Wifi network or its settings, you may need to repeat these steps.

Connecting to Spotify™

By connecting your Smart Turntable with your Spotify account, it will be able to know what you are listening to, and show the correct album cover on the record as you listen.

retro!

You’ll want to keep your keyboard plugged in for this bit, as you might need to type in your Spotify login details.

1.Once your Smart Turntable starts up, you should see the screen shown here.

Tap on your picture to select who will be using the device this time.

Tapping Tips:
The display on this device uses a slightly more old-school touchscreen than your fancy modern smartphone.
It won’t respond to a feather touch, but it doesn’t need to be stabbed or held down in order to work.
My best advice is just to tap with confidence, using the end of your finger.

2.The Turntable will ask you to confirm that you are happy for it to access your Spotify account information.
Don’t worry, it won’t ask you this every time.

3.Sign in to Spotify using your usual login name and password.
The first person to sign in will be prompted with a normal login screen from Spotify.
The second person to sign in might see a screen similar to this one. Spotify likes to assume you’re the same person as before, so be sure to click the ‘Not you?’ link in order to enter your own details instead.

4.The currently playing track should appear in the center of the record If Spotify is currently playing it will rotate.
If the track is paused the label will remain stationary until the song is set to play.
You can change this setting.
See ‘Changing Settings’.

Connecting Bluetooth

Once you have Spotify connected successfully, it’s time to play some music from the speakers.
To do this, we need to connect using Bluetooth. Open your Bluetooth settings on your phone or computer, and select ‘SANWU AUDIO’ from the available devices.

Switching Users

1.On the main ‘Now Playing’ screen, tap once to bring up the main menu.

2.Tap on ‘Change User’.
The turntable will return to the welcome screen, allowing you to select a new listener.

Turning Off Your Turntable

Your Smart Turntable is powered by a little computer called a Raspberry Pi. Just like a regular computer, it’s never a good idea to suddenly turn off it’s power without shutting it down.

Don’t just use the main power switch to turn off your Turntable.
Always shut it down properly first.

1.Tap once on the display to bring up the main menu.
2.Select ‘Shut Down’ from the list of options.
3.Select ‘Yes’ when the Turntable asks if you are sure you wish to shut down.
4.After about 5-10 seconds, the display will be dark and it will be safe to use the main power switch to turn off the device completely.

Music can still be played over Bluetooth after the Shut Down button is pressed and the Raspberry Pi has turned off. The Bluetooth components and speakers are a separate
system from the Raspberry Pi and they don’t need to be shut down. As long as the Pi has shut down and the display is dark, it is safe to switch off, even if music is still playing.

Changing Settings

Your Smart Turntable comes with a few options which you can set according to your preference.

1.On the main ‘Now Playing’ screen, tap once to bring up the main menu.
2.Tap on ‘Settings’ to display the settings menu.
Click the back arrow at the top of the screen if you wish to return to the main menu.
3.Tap on any of the options to change it’s setting.

Available Options

Rotation
On: The record label will rotate any time a song is playing. If a song is paused, the label will stop turning.
Off : The record label will remain stationary regardless of whether a song is currently playing or paused.

Auto Pause

On: The turntable will pause your Spotify playback if the needle is lifted from the surface of the record. It will resume playback if the needle is placed back onto the surface of the record.
Off: The position of the needle will not affect playback.

Track Info

This setting adjusts the length of time that the track information is shown on the display each time the song changes.
Off : Track information will not be shown.
5s : Track information will show for approximately 5 seconds, then fade.
20s: Track information will show for approximately 20 seconds, then fade.
Always : Track information will be permanently displayed at all times.

Clear All User Data

This will delete all of the stored data on the device. This is useful if you wish to log out both of the accounts for any reason, or it can be useful in certain troubleshooting scenarios.

SpecsTroubleshooting

Won’t switch on.

Check the power lead is secure. Double check the fuse in the plug.
Do you see any LED lights inside the case (look closely through the speaker grille) if you see any lights then the unit is getting power.
It might be a problem with the display.
If there are absolutely no red or blue LED lights then there may be a problem with the power supply inside the machine.

No user interface appears or ‘Webpage Unavailable’

Your Wifi connection might be down. See steps under ‘Connecting to Wifi’ to check that the device is connected.

Turntable starts, but touch screen doesn’t work

There is a bug in the touch screen software which sometimes (rarely) prevents it from working correctly. Remove the record and press
ALT + F4 on the keyboard. Double click the ‘TouchScreen Fixer’ icon on the desktop (you’ll need to use a mouse to do this).
If that doesn’t correct the issue, shut down, unplug, wait a few seconds and then restart the turntable.

Something else is wrong

While I did what I could to make sure your turntable works properly, it is after all a home made object and might screw up from time to time.
Luckily the device comes with a lifetime warranty and should you need help, just get in touch with me and I’ll see what I can do!
