Anti-legionella recommendations

Informative
Legionella are small rod shaped bacteria which are a natural constituent of all fresh waters. Legionaries’ disease is a serious pneumonia infection caused by inhaling the bacteria Legionella pneumophilia or other Legionella species. This bacterium is frequently found in domestic, hotel and other water systems and in water used for air conditioning or air cooling system. Hence the main intervention against the condition is prevention, through control of the organism in water systems. The European standard CEN/TR 16355 gives recommendations for good practice concerning the prevention of Legio-nella growth in drinking water installations but existing national regulations remain in force.

General recommendations

  • “Conditions for Legionella growth”. The following conditions encourage Legionella growth:
  • water temperature between 25 °C and 50 °C. To restrict the growth of Legionella bacteria, the water temperature shall be in a range that the bacteria will not grow or have minimum growth, wherever possible. Otherwise, it is necessary to disinfect a drinking water installation by means of a thermal treatment;
  • stagnation of the water. To avoid long periods of stagnation, the water in every part of the drinking water installation should be used or flushed at least weekly;
  • nutrients, biofilm and sediment within the installation including water heaters, etc. Sediment can support the growth of Legionella bacteria and it should be removed on a regular basis from e.g. storage systems, water heaters, non-flown through expansion vessels (e.g. once a year).

Regarding to this storage water heater, if

  1. the product is switched-off for a period of time [months] or
  2. the water temperature is kept constant in the range 25 – 50°C and the Legionella bacteria could grow in the tank. In such circumstances, reduce the proliferation of the bacteria by running a “thermal sanitisation cycle”.

Water heaters are sold with software that allows a “thermal sanitisation cycle” to be run when it is activated in order to reduce the proliferation of Legionella in the tank. This cycle is suitable for domestic hot water systems and complies with the guidelines for the prevention of Legionella stipulated in Table 2 of standard CEN/TR 16355 (see below).

Table 2 – Types of hot water systemARISTON-Electric-Water-Heaters-
FIG-17

Electromechanical water heaters are sold with the thermal sanitisation cycle disabled (default setting). If, for some reason, any of the above “conditions in favour of the proliferation of Legionella” occurs, it is strongly recommended to enable this function according to the instructions found in this manual [see <>]. However, the thermal disinfection cycle does not kill all Legionella bacteria in the storage tank. It follows that if the function is disabled, the Legionella bacteria may reoccur. Note: when the software performs the thermal sanitisation treatment, it is likely that the power consumption of the water heaters increases.  Electromechanical water heaters are sold with the thermal sanitisation cycle disabled (default setting). Caution: the water temperature in the tank can cause immediate serious burns when the software runs the thermal disinfection treatment. Children, disabled persons and the aged are particularly at risk of burns. Check the water temperature before taking a bath or shower.

INSTALLING NORMS

Attention! The installation and set-up of the water heater must be carried out by a qualified technician in conformity
with the applicable rules and hygiene and sanitary standards in force and with any provisions set forth
in this manual.

Hot-water boiler bonding against the wall

  1. Water heater mounting is made on the main wall using brackets and fastening hooks. Fastening hooks (not included in the supply) with a diameter of at least 12 mm are recommended. Depending on the model, you will need 2 or 4 of the fastening hooks.
  2. Prepared fastening must support a weight that is three times higher than the weight of the water heater filled with water.
  3. The appliance should be installed as close as possible to the point of water intake to limit heat (A in Fig. 1).
  4. Allow for a clearance of at least 50 cm under the appliance and a clearance of 10 cm from the ceiling for maintenance.
  5. Fastening of hooks to the wall must prevent inadvertent movement of the bracket of the water heater over them. After installation, be sure to check security of the fastening.
  6. To prevent the property of the customer and (or) third party from damage caused by failures of hot water supply system, it is recommended to mount the water heater in the premises provided with waterproof floor and sewer drain. Never put objects sensitive to water under the water heater.
  7. During mounting water heater in the unprotected areas, you must install underneath the protective tray with drainage into the sewer.

Hydraulic connection
Attention! Installation of safety valve Included In the delivery set Is necessary.
Do not install any stop valve between the safety valve and cold water inlet of the water heater and do not block
the drain hole of the safety valve.
Demountable connectors should be used for the water heater connection to the water supply system.

Standard connection

  1. Safety valve (A in Fig. 2) supplied must be installed on the cold water inlet of the water heater (marked with the blue ring).

  2. Connect the inlet of the safety valve to the cold water line with a tube or flexible hose.

  3. Connect a tube or flexible hose to the hot water outlet of the water heater (marked with the red ring) for hot water
    removal to the draw-off point.

  4. For easy maintenance, it is recommended to install a T-piece with shut-off (B in Fig. 2) between the cold water inlet and safety valve of the water heater. It will help to drain water from the water heater without safety valve removal.

  5. To facilitate the access of air into the tank when draining water, it is recommended to install an additional T-piece with shut-off valve at the hot water output.

  6. When water pressure exceeds 5 bar, place before the safety valve a reducer to reduce the pressure.

  7. The device cannot work with water where hardness is less than 12°F. If water is with hardness above 25°F,
    it is necessary to use softener to reduce the formation of scale and the probability of failure of the heating element.
    The water hardness should not fall below 15°F Connection to open tank filled with water

  8. Water is supplied to the water heater from the tank by gravity. Safety valve is not necessary in this type of connection.

Electrical connection

Attention! Electrical wiring should be done by a qualified technician, ensuring it complies with safety rules. The manufacturer is not to be held responsiable for any damage caused by the incorrect earthing of system or for fault defaults of electricity supply.

  1. If the product is already equipped with a cable and plug, simply connect it to a power supply source.
  2. If the water heater is supplied without a power supply cable, use a cable featuring the same characteristics (type H05VV-F 3×1,5 mm2, Ø 8,5 mm) for connection. Remove the cover. The power supply cable should be threaded through the relevant hole on the cover of the appliance and fixed to the thermostat terminals. Then every wire should be fixed in place by the corresponding screw.
  3. The water heater must be earthed. Grounding scheme should ensure the absence of electric potential on the body of the water heater. The earth cable (of yellow-green color) should be fixed to the terminal marked by the symbol . Fix the power supply cable using the cable clamps.

Make sure that the power supply voltage conforms to the water heater technical characteristics indicated on the data plate.

USER INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION Observe all general warnings and safety standards listed at the beginning of this text in full; all such instructions are obligatory.

Advice for user

  • Avoid positioning any objects and/or appliances that could be damaged by water leaks beneath the water heater.
  •  Should you not use any water for an extended period of time, you should: disconnect the appliance from the electrical supply by switching the external switch to “OFF”; turn off the plumbing circuit taps.
  • Hot water at above 50°C flowing out of the taps at the point of use could cause serious scalds or even death from
  • burns. Children, the disabled and the elderly are more exposed to the risk of burns. It is strictly forbidden for the
  • user to perform any routine or extraordinary maintenance.
  • To clean the external parts use a damp cloth soaked in soap and water.

Adjusting the temperature and activating the functions
The product is set to “Manual” by default, with a temperature set to 70 °C and the function “ECO EVO” is active.
In case of a power failure or if the product is switched off using the button ON/OFF (Ref. A), the last temperature set remains saved.
Slight noise may occur during the heating phase due to the water being heated.

For models equipped with user interface shown in figure 9 and 11:
Switch the appliance on by pressing the ON/OFF button (Ref. A). Set the desired temperature by selecting a level between 40°C and 80°C using the “ + ” and “ – ”. buttons. During the heating phase, the LEDs (Ref. 1-5) related to the temperature reached by the water remain on; the subsequent ones, until the temperature is set, flash progressively. If the temperature drops, for example due to water being drawn, the heating is automatically reactivated and the LEDs between the last one on (steady) and that related to the set temperature start
to flash progressively again.

For models equipped with user interface shown in figure 10:
Switch the appliance on by pressing the ON/OFF button (Ref. A) During the heating phase, the lines on both sides of the display (Ref. C) remain on.
On first installation, the display must be oriented according to the installation of the product. If vertical no action is required; if horizontal, the display must be oriented accordingly by pressing the “MODE” + “ECO” simultaneously for 5 seconds.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR WORKS

Attention! Do not try to repair the appliance by yourself. All maintenance and repair works should be carried out by a qualified technician in conformity with the safety norms and with any provisions set forth in this manual.

Water Drain
If there is a possibility that the ambient temperature drops below 0°C in the room where the appliance is installed, drain water from the water heater.

  1. Disconnect the appliance from the electrical supply;
  2. Make sure that the water in the appliance is of safe temperature;
  3. Turn off the tap of cold water supply to the water heater;
  4. Turn on the hot water tap on mixer for pressure relief inside the tank;
  5. Turn on the T-connector stop valve installed at hot water outlet (marked with red ring) for air access into the tank. If it is absent, remove the connections at the water heater outlet;
  6. Connect drain hose directed into the sewer to the T-connector stop valve installed at the cold water inlet of the water heater (marked with the blue ring) and open it. If there is no T-connector, connect the hose to water heater inlet;
  7. After draining, make sure there is no water inside the water heater.

Freezing of water inside the water heater leads to irreversible changes and defects. It invalidates all warranty liability on the part of the manufacturer
