Important Facts about Blood Pressure and SelfMeasurement

  • Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood flowing in the arteries generated by the pumping of the heart. Two values, the systolic (upper) value, and the diastolic (lower) value are always measured.
  • The device indicates the pulse rate (the number of times the heart beats in a minute).
  • Permanently high blood pressure values can damage your health and must be treated by your doctor!
  • Always discuss your values with your doctor and tell him/her if you have noticed anything unusual or feel unsure. Never rely on single blood pressure readings.
  • Enter your readings in the enclosed blood pressure diary. This will give your doctor a quick overview.
  • There are many causes of excessively high blood pressure values. Your doctor will explain them in more detail and offer treatment where appropriate. Besides medication, relaxation techniques, weight loss, and exercise can also lower your blood pressure.
  • Under no circumstances should you alter the dosages of drugs or initiate treatment without consulting your doctor.
  • Depending on physical exertion and condition, blood pressure is subject to wide fluctuations as the day progresses. You should therefore take your measurements in the same quiet conditions and when you feel relaxed! Take at least two measurements per day, one in the morning and one in the evening.
  • It is quite normal for two measurements taken in quick succession to produce significantly different results.
  • Deviations between measurements taken by your doctor or in the pharmacy and those taken at home are quite normal, as these situations are completely different.
  • Several measurements provide a much clearer picture than just one single measurement.
  • Leave a small break of at least 15 seconds between two measurements.
  • If you are pregnant, you should monitor your blood pressure regularly as it can change drastically during this time.
  • If you suffer from a cardiac arrhythmia consult with your doctor before using the device. See also chapter «Appearance of the Irregular Heartbeat (IHB) Symbol» of this user manual.
  • The pulse display is not suitable for checking the frequency of heart pacemakers!

How do I evaluate my blood pressure?
Table for classifying blood pressure values in adults in accordance with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2003. Data in mmHg.

Range Systolic Diastolic Recommendation
1. blood pressure normal < 120 < 80
2. blood pressure normal 120 – 129 80 – 84
3. blood pressure slightly high 130 – 139 85 – 89

doctor
4.| blood pressure too high| 140 -159| 90 – 99| Seek medical advice
5.| blood pressure far too high| 160 – 179| 100 – 109| Seek medical advice
6.| blood pressure dangerously high| ?180| | Urgently seek medical advice!

The higher value is the one that determines the evaluation.
Example : a readout value between 150/85 or 120/98 mmHg indicates «blood pressure too high». The slot-in
card 3 on the front of the device shows ranges 1-6 in the Table.

Using the Device for the First Time

Activating the fitted batteries
Pull out the protective strip from the battery compartment 7.

Setting the date and time

  1. After the new batteries are fitted, the year number flashes in the display. You can set the year by pressing the M-button AT. To confirm and then set the month, press the time button AL.
  2. Press the M-button to set the month. Press the time button to confirm and then set the day.
  3. Follow the instructions above to set the day, hour, and minutes.
  4. Once you have set the minutes and pressed the time button, the date and time are set and the time is displayed.
  5. If you want to change the date and time, press and hold the time button down for approx. 3 seconds until the year number starts to flash. Now you can enter the new values as described above.

Selecting the correct cuff
Microlife offers different cuff sizes. Select the cuff size to match the circumference of your upper arms (measured by close-fitting in the center of the upper arm).

Cuff size for the circumference of the upper arm
S 17
M 22
L 32
M-L 22

Pre-shaped cuffs are optionally available.
Only use Microlife cuffs.

Contact your local Microlife Service if the enclosed cuff 8 does not fit.
Connect the cuff to the device by inserting the cuff connector 9 into the cuff socket 4 as far as it will go.
If you buy a spare Microlife cuff (size S, 17-22cm), please remove the cuff connector from the cuff tube from the cuff supplied with the original device and insert this cuff connector into the tube of the spare cuff (only valid for cuff size S).

Selecting standard or MAM mode
This device enables you to select either standard (standard single measurement) or MAM mode (automatic triple measurement). To select standard mode, slide the MAM switch AK on the side of the device downwards to position «1» and to select MAM mode, slide this switch upwards to position «3».

MAM mode

  • In MAM mode, 3 measurements are automatically taken in succession and the result is then automatically analyzed and displayed. Because the blood pressure constantly fluctuates, a result determined in this way is more reliable than one produced by a single measurement.
  • After pressing the ON/OFF button 1, the MAM-symbol BK appears in the display.
  • The bottom, right-hand section of the display shows a 1, 2, or 3 to indicate which of the 3 measurements is currently being taken.
  • There is a break of 15 seconds between the measurements (15 seconds are adequate according to «Blood Pressure Monitoring, 2001, 6:145-147» for oscillometric instruments). A count down indicates the remaining time and a beep will sound 5 seconds before the 2nd and 3rd readings will begin.
  • The individual results are not displayed. Your blood pressure will only be displayed after all 3 measurements are taken.
  • Do not remove the cuff between measurements.
  • If one of the individual measurements was questionable, a fourth one is automatically taken.

Taking a Blood Pressure Measurement

Checklist for taking a reliable measurement

  1. Avoid activity, eating, or smoking immediately before the measurement.

  2. Sit down on a back-supported chair and relax for 5 minutes. Keep the feet flat on the floor and do not cross your legs.

  3. Always measure on the same arm (normally left).

  4. Remove close-fitting garments from the upper arm. To avoid constriction, shirt sleeves should not be rolled up – they do not interfere with the cuff if they are laid flat.

  5. Always ensure that the correct cuff size is used (marking on the cuff).
    • Fit the cuff closely, but not too tight.
    • Make sure that the cuff is positioned 1-2 cm above the elbow.
    • The artery mark on the cuff (ca. 3 cm long bar) must lie over the artery which runs down the inner side of the arm.
    •  Support your arm so it is relaxed.
    •  Ensure that the cuff is at the same height as your heart.

  6. Press the ON/OFF button 1 to start the measurement.

  7. The cuff will now pump up automatically. Relax, do not move, and do not tense your arm muscles until the measurement result is displayed. Breathe normally and do not talk.

  8. When the correct pressure is reached, the pumping stops and the pressure falls gradually. If the required pressure was not reached, the device will automatically pump some more air into the cuff.

  9. During the measurement, the heart symbol AN flashes in the display and a beep sounds every time a heartbeat is detected.

  10. The result, comprising the systolic AQ and the diastolic AR blood pressure and the pulse rate AS is displayed and a long beep is heard. Note also the explanations on further display symbols in this booklet.

  11. When the measurement has finished, remove the cuff and pack it into the device as shown in Fig. II.

  12. Enter the result in the enclosed blood pressure pass and switch off the device. (The monitor does switch off automatically after approx. 1 min.).
You can stop the measurement at any time by pressing the ON/OFF button (e.g. if you feel uneasy or have an unpleasant pressure sensation).
If the systolic blood pressure is known to be very high, it can be an advantage to set the pressure individually. Press the ON/OFF button after the monitor has been pumped up to a level of approx. 30 mmHg (shown on the display). Keep the button pressed until the pressure is about 40 mmHg above the expected systolic value – then release the button.

The appearance of the Irregular Heartbeat (IHB) Symbol

This symbol AM indicates that an irregular heartbeat was detected. In this case, the measured blood pressure may deviate from your actual blood pressure values. It is recommended to repeat the measurement.

Information for the doctor in case of repeated appearance of the IHB symbol:
This device is an oscillometric blood pressure monitor that also measures the pulse during blood pressure measurement and indicates when the heart rate is irregular.

Traffic Light Indicator in the Display

The bars on the left-hand edge of the traffic light display BM show you the range within which the indicated blood pressure value lies. Depending on the height of the bar, the readout value is either within the normal (green), borderline (yellow), or danger (red) range. The classification corresponds to the 6 ranges in the Table as defined by the WHO, as described in «Section 1.». Additionally, the colors on the display differ according to the readings. If, for example, the readings are in the range of 1 to 2 the display light is green, in the range of 3 the light is yellow, and in the range of 4, 5, and 6, the display light is red. Data Memory At the end of each measurement, this device automatically stores the result, including the date and time.

Viewing the stored values

Press the M-button AT briefly, when the device is switched off. The display first shows «M» AP and then a value, e.g. «M 17». This means that there are 17 values in the memory. The device then switches to the last stored result. Pressing the M-button again displays the previous value. Pressing the M-button repeatedly enables you to move from one stored value to another.

Memory full

Pay attention that the maximum memory capacity of 200 is not exceeded. When the memory is full, the old values are automatically overwritten with new ones. Values should be evaluated by a doctor before the memory capacity is reached – otherwise, data will be lost.

Clearing all values
If you are sure that you want to permanently remove all stored values, hold down the M-button (the device must have been switched off beforehand) until «CL» appears and then release the button. To permanently clear the memory, press the M-button while «CL» is flashing. Individual values cannot be cleared. How not to store a reading As soon as the reading is displayed press and hold the ON/OFF button 1 until «M» AP is flashing. Confirm to delete the reading by pressing the M-button AT.

Replacing the Slot-in Card

You can replace slot-in card 3 by pulling it out to the side, as shown in Fig. IV, and replacing the paper insert. It may be helpful to have your doctor note down the medication dosage or an emergency telephone number on the card. Extra cards are supplied with the device for this purpose.

Setting the Alarm Function

This device allows you to set 2 alarm times at which an alarm signal will then be triggered. This can be a useful aid, for instance as a reminder to take medication.

  1. To set an alarm time, press the time button AL (the device must have been switched off beforehand) and immediately afterward the M-button AT and hold both down until the bell symbol BN appears in the bottom left of the display. Then release both buttons. The flashing «1» in the display indicates that the first alarm time can now be set.
  2. Press the time button to set the hours – the hour display flashes and pressing the M-button allows you to set the alarm hour. To confirm, press the time button.
  3. The minute display will now flash. The minutes can be set using the M-button. To confirm, press the time button again.
  4. The bell symbol will now flash. Use the M-button to select whether the alarm time is to be active (bell) or inactive (crossed out bell). To confirm, press the time button.
  5. To set a second alarm time, proceed as above but if the «1» flashes, press the M-button to select «2» and confirm with the time button.
  6. An active alarm time is indicated by the bell symbol in the display.
  7. The alarm will sound at the set time every day.
  8. To switch off the alarm when it is sounding, press the ON/OFFbutton 1.
  9. To permanently switch off the alarm, proceed as above and select the crossed-out bell symbol. This will then disappear from the display.
  10. The alarm times must be re-entered each time the batteries are replaced.

Battery Indicator and Battery change

Low battery
When the batteries are approximately ¾ empty the battery symbol AO will flash as soon as the device is switched on (partly filled battery displayed). Although the device will continue to measure reliably, you should obtain replacement batteries.

Flat battery – replacement
When the batteries are flat, the battery symbol AO will flash as soon as the device is switched on (flat battery displayed). You cannot take any further measurements and must replace the batteries.

  1. Open battery compartment 7 at the back of the device by pushing inwards at the two arrows and pulling out the battery compartment cover.
  2. Replace the batteries – ensure correct polarity as shown by the symbols in the compartment.
  3. To set a date and time, follow the procedure described in «Section 2.».
The memory retains all values although date and time (and possibly also set alarm times) must be reset – the year number, therefore, flashes automatically after the batteries are replaced.
