TRAINING PLAN
Be sure to monitor your intensity and exercise speed.
This is especially important when starting a new training program. The easiest way is to start slowly and watch how fast you progress. In the first few weeks of exercising with a seated elliptical trainer, you may want to start at a speed between 1-3, depending on your current fitness level. As you become more accustomed to the exercises, make slow, gradual adjustments throughout the workout so that you can work at a moderate level while still being able to speak during the exercises and not feel like you are having difficulty breathing and speaking at the same time. Starting at a level that is too high poses a risk of injury. It is important to give your body the time it needs to build its endurance and strength when starting an exercise program.
Things to consider when starting an exercise program:
- Follow each section of the training and work to find a pace/resistance that allows you to exercise at a comfortable pace.
- Slow down if you feel out of breath or if your muscles twitch, or feel weak or tired. You should feel like you are moving, but you should also be able to speak in complete sentences.
- Consider doing your workouts about three times a week with a rest day in between as needed.
- Progress by adding a few minutes each time you exercise until you are at 30 minutes.
- Stretching the lower body after exercise is also important to prevent injury.
- Be sure to stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water before and after your workout to ensure you are well hydrated.
EXAMPLES OF TRAINING PROGRAMS
Duration
|
Intensity/tempo
---|---
5 mins| Warm up at a comfortable pace and keep the speed between 1-2.
3 mins| Increase the speed by one level. (2-3) You should feel that you are
exercising, but at the same time be able to have a conversation.
2 mins| Increase the speed again so that you are between level 3-4.
3 mins| REDUCE SPEED
2 mins| Increase the speed again until you are working a little harder than
when you started.
5 mins| Reduce the speed to a comfortable level to cool down the device.
Total training time: 20 minutes
To expand on this workout, start by adding another three minutes to the second phase of exercises and then increase your time by two more minutes before doing the five-minute cool down at the end of your workout. This should extend your workout to 25 minutes. (see examples below) Stay at this level for a week and then add another section of three minutes of lighter workouts and two minutes of harder workouts. Now you are at the 30-minute level for the exercise. (see below) Three examples in table form: how to increase activity to improve endurance (increase time frame of 20, 25, 30 minutes):
Note: The exercises can also be varied by the level of initial intensity.
