**SETUP
**
- Thread the light stand adapter into the bottom of the Star Light. If the light stand used (sold separately) has a 1/4”-20 male thread, thread the Star Light onto the light stand.
- If the light stand used has a top stud (no thread), loosen the lower knob on the light stand adapter until the silver reversible thread adapter releases. Slide the stand adapter without the silver reversible adapter over the stud and tighten using the lower knob.
- If using the power cord, attach to the back of the Star Light and tighten down to secure.
- If using the included batteries, slide each into the designated battery dock on each side of the light base until it locks in.
Before use: Plug the included battery chargers into household sockets. The LED light on the chargers display red while charging and turn green when the batteries are fully charged. This can take up to 6 hours if the batteries are completely drained when charging begins. The included batteries can power the Star Light for up to 70 minutes at full power before needing recharging. Open the Star Light beginning with the front arm. Turn clockwise for 4 clicks. Turn the second arm 3 clicks, and so on until the 5 arms resemble a 5-point star. The last arm will stay in its initial position pointing straight down. *DO NOT FORCE THE ARMS OR TRY TO OPEN IN A COUNTERCLOCKWISE POSITION. To close, reverse the above steps until all 5 arms are aligned and in the down position.
ACCESSORIES
- Mirrorless cameras and mobile phones can be attached using the included ball head. Mirrorless cameras can be attached to the ball head by threading onto the ¼”-20 male thread on top of the ball head. For cell phones, thread a phone holder (sold separately) into the top of the ball head. Loosen the tightening knob near the bottom of the ball head to attach to the shoe mount on the Star Light. Slide the shoe on the bottom of the ball head onto the cold shoe on the Star Light. Tighten down using the knurled knob to secure.
- To turn on, press the On/Off button directly below the LED display and the Star Light should illuminate.
MANUAL CONTROL
Depending on the setting selected when the light was last used, the digital
readout will display either a number between P1 and P100 or a number between
3200 and 5500.
P = POWER.
Adjust the power between 1 and 100 to achieve the desired light intensity.
3200 – 5500 = KELVIN TEMPERATURE.
Use this function to either accurately reproduce the true colors of the
subject (5500K / daylight) or reduce to (3200K / tungsten) to produce a warmer
look. Most environments are somewhere between 3200K and 5500K because of
multiple light sources in the room. This setting can also be used to change
the Kelvin temperature anywhere in between 3200K and 5500K to approximately
match the available light in the room.
To change from selecting intensity to Kelvin temperature, press the controller
button one time.
MOBILE APP CONTROL
DAYLIGHT KELVIN MODE
The color temperature and brightness can be controlled remotely using the free Savage Light Manager app available for download in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. With the Bluetooth setting on your phone enabled, turn the Star Light on by pressing the controller knob on the back panel once. Open the Savage Light Manager app on your phone. Pairing the Star Light in your phone manually is unnecessary. The Star Light should sync with the app automatically when the app is opened. The light will not pair until the app is opened.Note: The light will not unpair unless the Bluetooth function on your phone is turned off in the settings menu or the battery is removed. Remove the battery for storage to prevent accidental draining between uses.
COLOR TEMPERATURE WHEEL
The Savage Star Light can be set to 5500K / daylight output. It can also be set to 3200K / tungsten light that is similar to a cool white incandescent look. In many rooms, there are multiple light sources in the room that are blending together. In those instances, the light in the room is neither daylight nor tungsten. The Kelvin wheel allows the user to blend the 2 light sources to match the available light in the room. It can also be used to “warm” or “cool” the subject for creative purposes. To enable the color temperature blending function on the Star Light, tap the “Color Temperature Wheel” (C). You will then be able to slide your finger around the color wheel (1) to achieve the color temperature of your choice. Once the desired color has been selected, scroll right on the white Light Output Bar (2) to increase or left to decrease light output. Below the Light Output Bar (2), there are 6 “Preset Buttons”. They are not programmable. The first button in the Standard presets labeled will decrease the light output to 0% (the light will still be in the On position). The second buton labeled “3200K” will adjust your light to tungsten. The third button labeled “5600K” will set the light to daylight color temperature. The 25% and 5% buttons are for reducing the light output at the selected Kelvin temperature. The Light Output Bar (2) can also be used for finer light output adjustments.
MANAGE BULBS
MANAGING BULBS
FOR ANDROID: Name your light:Tap the “List” icon at the top left of the app. A
sidebar will open up that lists “Manage Bulbs” Click the “Settings” icon next
to “Manage Bulbs”. You should see the light listed. It will begin with
“Magic….” Tap the wrench icon next to the listed light. A box will open to
renaming. Type in the name of your choice and select OK. If you have multiple
lights, it is possible to control them separately using the Savage Light
Manager.
IPHONE:
Tap the “List” icon at the top left of the app. A sidebar will open up that
lists “Group Manage” and “My Device”. Click “Group Manage”, then “Add”. Type
in the name of your choice and select OK.
Repeat above steps to rename the second light. Important: If you are using the
app on more than one phone, you can only pair the device/devices to one phone
at a time. If the device is paired to more than on phone at the same time, the
functions will not work.
TO CONTROL MORE THAN ONE LIGHT USING: DEFAULT GROUPS
Tap the “List “icon at the top left of the app A side bar will open up that
lists “Default Groups” Tap on right pointing arrow next to “Default Group” and
you should see each paired light. Note: only lights that are currently turned
on will be visible. If the light is controllable with the app, it will be
highlighted with a blue background for Android or gray for iPhone. If multiple
lights are highlighted, then the app will control all at the same time. If the
light does not have a blue/gray background, tap on it in the app. Blue/gray
background will come on and the light will be controllable. Note: the bulb to
the left of the named light should appear to be lighted. If it does not, tap
the bulb and it will appear to light. Note: The chain to the right side of the
light should appear unbroken, if the 2 links appear to be separated, tap on
the chain until they appear connected. Breaking the chain can be used when
temporarily disabling the light from the app is desired. Only highlighted
lights will be controlled by the app. To control lights separately, tap any
light icon and the blue highlight will disappear. That light will no longer be
controlled by the app allowing the user to control each light independently.
Troubleshooting
Note: The Savage Light Manager was designed to work with multiple Savage
lighting products. The app has extended features which may not be compatible
with all lights. The Savage Star Light was designed for use with the “Color
Correcting” Wheel to adjust color temperature and brightness. The RGB, special
effects and Music/Mood features are not compatible with the Savage Star Light.
Problem: Light behaves erratically.
FOR ANDROID:
If the app has been running in the background for extended periods of time,
the app’s cache can fill up. Solution: To solve, close the “Savage Light
Manager” app. Go to “Settings” in your phone. In settings, go to “Application
Manager”. Scroll to the app “Savage Light Manager”. Tap “Storage”. Tap “Clear
Cache”. This will likely solve the issue. Re-open the “Savage light Manager
App” and re-try. If light fails to pair with your device’s Bluetooth,
GPS/Location Service may need to be enabled.
FOR iPhone:
Closeout of the app completely and then re-open. You can also try to remove
the battery from the light and re-attach or restart the phone completely. If
the light appears to be paired but the light cannot be controlled, see
instructions for Default Groups. The light that is being used should be
highlighted in blue/gray, the bulb to the right of the device should appear on
and the chain to the left of the described device should appear unbroken.
