Manual

Welcome.
We are delighted that you have decided to purchase a product. Your new POWER BAR is mains distribution panel, which incorporates filters and other protective circuitry specially designed to optimise the sound of high-quality Hi-Fi components. The POWER BAR absorbs interference borne on the mains supply and thereby prevents it reaching the system. It also prevents any interaction between the individual system components, and effectively eliminates interference caused by stray earth and shield currents. Severe voltage peaks and surges often occur in thunderstorms and when equipment is switched on and off. The distribution panel is also fitted with a voltage surge protection system which reduces these peaks, and thereby helps to avoid potentially terminal damage to the highly sensitive Hi-Fi electronics connected to it. We are grateful for the faith you have shown in our company in purchasing this product, and hope you enjoy many hours of undisturbed listening pleasure provided by your POWER BAR mains distribution panel.

Interference can affect a Hi-Fi system by several different routes, and suitable measures need to be taken to avoid each potential problem.

Radiated interference
In the modern world we are constantly surrounded by high frequency electro- magnetic interference fields. The mains leads and inter-connects of a typical Hi-Fi system can act as aerials, picking up these fields and passing them on to the devices to which they are connected. The POWER BAR mains panel and POWER LINE mains leads are completely shielded all round, and the shield prevents stray electrical fields reaching the internal conductors; instead they are simply passed to earth. The construction of the conductors in mains leads is arranged in such a way that open conductor loops cannot arise, and this means that magnetic fields cannot occur within them.

Mains-borne interference
The wires of the mains power supply network also tend to act as aerials. A further problem is that the mains supply is usually connected to a wide range of equipment which generates powerful interference, such as computers, switching units, control systems and motors, all of which inject a broad spectrum of interference into the mains supply. This interference is passed on via the mains network and inevitably reaches the sensitive Hi-Fi equipment – unless prevented. All Hi-Fi components feature internal mains filters which guard against this type of incoming interference, but it is always better to suppress the interference before it reaches the equipment rather than provide protection inside the unit itself. The POWER BAR provides effective protection in the form of symmetrical PI filters with current compensated inductivity, and these filters absorb a broad band of mains-borne interference and prevent it reaching the system. The filters are complemented by ferrite rings which are fitted to the outer sleeves of the POWER BAR supply cable and POWER LINE mains leads. The ferrite rings suppress interference fields, prevent them penetrating into the system, and also prevent them passing from device to device.

Interference generated by other system components
The ferrite ring on the POWER BAR cable is movable, i.e. you can re- position it to deal with the frequency spectrum which is causing you problems. If interference occurs, adjust the position of the ferrite ring until the optimum

Polarity indicator
It is not only external equipment which generates interference; the individual components of a Hi-Fi system – especially digital machines – can also cause problems. The design of the mains filter system prevents such interference reaching other units via the mains wiring system. This is achieved by decoupling the source device sockets from each other using separate shield current blocking filters. Additionally all the sockets are wired in a star-type cabling from a central connecting point.
The polarity of the mains connector can make a difference with many high- quality Hi-Fi components, and it is important to establish this correctly. The mains connector polarity can have a significant influence on the quality of reproduced sound, depending on the winding technology employed for the mains transformer and the design of the mains power supply section. The POWER BAR includes a visual polarity indicator which enables you to check that polarity is correct. The mains plug attached to the POWER BAR should be connected in such a way that the indicator LED does not glow. If the polarity is set up in this way, the marked terminal of each mains supply socket is the phase line, and this should be connected to the correspondingly marked terminal of the Hi- Fi unit connected to that socket. If you use the POWER LINE, all you have to do is connect the marked terminal of the safety mains plug to the marked terminal of the POWER BAR, and all the units connected to the distribution panel will have correct polarity automatically, since the Euro mains connectors which we use are polarised, i.e. they can only be connected one way round.

Voltage surge protection
Modern Hi-Fi devices are very sensitive to voltage peaks and surges which can occur in the mains power network due to a lightning strike or other event. The POWER BAR mains distribution panel includes an integral surge protection circuit designed to widen the safety margin for the components connected to the panel. This circuit can suppress currents of up to 10000 Amps and more, and thereby prevents almost all dangerous excess voltage peaks reaching the devices connected to the system. If other electrical equipment in your house is damaged by a lightning strike, please check the surge protection circuit of the POWER BAR. In case of failure the polarity indicator LED lights up red. Please note that, like a standard electrical fuse, this circuit may be destroyed by a serious surge in voltage, so it is essential to ask your specialist dealer to If you fail to do this the protective effect of the system may be lost.

Important notes

The operation instructions, the connection guidance and the safety notes are for your own good – please read them carefully and observe them at all times. The operating instructions are an integral part of this device. If you ever transfer the product to a new owner please be sure to pass them on to the purchaser to guard against incorrect operation and possible hazards.

If the unit gets very cold (e. g. when being transported), condensation may form inside it. Please do not switch it on until it has had plenty of time to warm up to room temperature, so that any condensation evaporates completely.

Care of the unit
Disconnect the mains plug at the wall socket before cleaning the case. The surfaces of the case should be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth only. Never use solvent-based or abrasive cleaners! Before switching the unit on again, check that all cables are plugged in correctly

Enclosure openings
Liquid or particles must never be allowed to get inside the unit through the ventilation slots. Mains voltage is present inside the unit, and any electric shock could cause serious injury or death. Never exert undue force on mains connectors. Protect the unit from drips and splashes of water; never place flower vases or fluid containers on the unit. Do not place naked flame sources, such as candle lights on the device.

The device is designed to operate in a temperate climate and altitudes up to 2000 m above sea level. The range of permissible operating temperatures is +10 … +30°C.

Overload
Make sure that the connected devices do not exceed the maximum total load capacity (see Technical data) of the POWER BAR. Connecting loads which together exceed the total load capacity of the POWER BAR may result in fire and destruction of the POWER BAR.

Service and damage
The case should only be opened by a qualified specialist technician. Repairs and fuse replacements should be entrusted to an authorised specialist workshop. With the exception of the connections and measures described in these instructions, no work of any kind may be carried out on the device by unqualified persons.
If the unit is damaged, or if you suspect that it is not functioning correctly, immediately disconnect the mains plug at the wall socket, and ask an authorised specialist workshop to check it.
