Introduction

Congratulations! You’ve just bought a Luminette®. Welcome to the world of portable light therapy.

Before using your Luminette®, please read this notice carefully and keep it somewhere safe. Also, please take the time to familiarise yourself with your new appliance using Figure 1.

The role of light

The human brain uses the light/dark cycle to synchronise internal functions including mood, appetite, digestion, sleep, libido, etc. These circadian rhythms oscillate over a period of 24 hours, forming your biological clock.

Melatonin is what is often called the sleep hormone. The brain starts producing it when the sun sets, in order to encourage us to sleep. But as the as the sun rises and the light increases, the brain stops producing it. We get up easily, full of energy.

As well as regulating our body clock, light also greatly affects mood, increases vigilance and improves physical and intellectual performance.

Light therapy

In certain situations, our body clock is no longer in phase with the external environment. The circadian rhythms are out of sync.

This is particularly true in winter when there is insufficient light; some people develop winter blues. It can also happen to people who go to sleep too early or too late. Jet lag is another form of a disrupted body clock. Finally, shift work (which concerns more than 10% of employees in Europe) is now recognised as causing serious health problems by interfering with circadian rhythms.

All these problems can be relieved; indeed, completely cured with the correct use of light and dark. When light is not naturally available, light therapy is the solution which offers the most advantages for the least unwanted side effects.

Applications
  • Winter blues
  • Fatigue – lack of energy
  • Circadian rhythm sleep disorder 9 EN
  • Jet lag
  • Working antisocial hours
Contraindications

No matter what your reason is for using Luminette®, we recommend not exceeding the recommended daily duration of use.

There are very few contraindications.

If you have an eye disease (glaucoma, retinitis or retinopathy or macular degeneration), we recommend that you consult a specialist before using the Luminette. If you have cataracts, light therapy may be less effective.

If you are concerned by a psychiatric condition (depression, hysteria, neurosis and psychosis), it is recommended to consult a doctor before using the appliance. It is also not advisable to use the Luminette® while driving a vehicle, or using machinery requiring concentration or a wide field of vision.

Luminette can also be worn over contact lenses or corrective glasses. For optimal results, the nose bracket of the Luminette should be placed behind corrective glasses. Note that it is not recommended to use Luminette with sunglasses or any color-filtering glasses.

Possible reactions

Possible adverse reactions to light from this appliance are relatively mild and of a transient nature. They may include:

  • Headache.
  • Eyestrain or visual disturbances, intraocular pressure.
  • Nausea.
  • Agitation, sedation, jumpiness/jitteriness and very rarely hypomania or mania.

Measures to avoid, minimise or alleviate these adverse reactions:

  • Always use the appliance in a well-lit room.

Use

When can I use my Luminette

To get rid of winter blues

Do you lack energy and motivation? Have difficulty getting up in the morning? Feel like hibernating? Constantly snack? Have lowered libido? If so, you could be suffering from «winter blues», which results from lower light levels in autumn and winter.

We advise a light therapy session as soon as you wake up in the morning

To fight fatigue and get energy back

Luminette® reproduces the beneficial power of daylight and stimulates special receptors in the eye to trigger the body’s energising response to light. This helps you to fight energy dips, to feel more energetic, active and alert, and to improve your mood.

We advise a light therapy session as soon as you wake up.

To treat circadian rhythms sleep disorders

Some sleep problems result from a phase advance or delay in your biological clock.

In which case, light therapy could be the solution.

Your body clock is slow

Do you tend to fall asleep too late and have a hard time getting up in the morning? We advise a light therapy session as soon as you wake up.

Your body clock is fast

Do you have a hard time staying awake in the evening and do you wake up too early in the morning? We advise a light therapy session at the end of the afternoon or the beginning of the evening, two or three hours before the time you plan to go to bed.

To treat jet lag

Jet lag is the result of crossing several time zones very rapidly, usually in a plane, and results in disturbed body rhythms: insomnia, drowsiness, physical and intellectual fatigue, mood swings, difficulty concentrating.

Some simple steps and the use of Luminette® can considerably reduce the symptoms.

  • During the flight

Set your watch to the time zone of your destination, drink lots of water and try not to drink alcohol, coffee or tea.

  • When you arrive

If you are travelling east, when you arrive we advise you to avoid sunlight on the first morning (by wearing blue blocker glasses or high sun protection sunglasses) and to get as much as you can in the afternoon (by, for example, using your Luminette®) in order to maintain low levels of melatonin. During the following days, put your session forward by two hours a day, taking care not to go past your normal bedtime.

If you are travelling west, once you arrive, we advise you to stay awake as long as it is still light, and to wear your Luminette® at the beginning of the afternoon (between midday and 3pm). But as soon as it is dark, go to sleep.

To optimise shift work

If you work for more than three nights in a row and you have a hard time staying awake at work and/or on your way home, then we recommend a light therapy session just before starting work and, if you get drowsy, a second session during your work break.

We also advise that you talk to your GP

How long does a light therapy session last

The recommended duration of a session depends on the intensity of the light received by the eye. EN  Your Luminette® allows you to choose from three different light intensities. The table below will tell you the recommended duration of use for your Luminette® depending on the position you choose.

Position (when turning on appliance)| Recommended duration of session (in minutes)
---|---
1| 60
2| 30
3| 20

The chosen light intensity is indicated by the 3 light intensity indicators (see figure 1 ). Once the session time is up, the glasses will blink three times and automatically turn off.

How often do I have to use my Luminette

Use the Luminette every day at the right time to achieve the desired results. Except when you try to beat jet-lag, it is advised to use the Luminette at the same time every day.

When do I start to notice improvement ?

Some users start to feel the energising effect after the first use. Others feel it after 1 or 2 weeks of daily use.

How to charge my Luminette ?

Before using your Luminette® for the first time, we recommend to charge it. To do so:

  • Connect the end of the micro-USB cable to the slot in your Luminette® (see figure 1) and plug the other end (a standard USB) in the charger.
  • Plug the charger into the mains.
  • When the device is completely charged (the charge time is 2 hours), unplug the charger.

You can also charge your Luminette® by connecting it to your computer using the USB cable supplied.

Charge indicator:

  • When your Luminette® is charging, the 3 battery indicators will continually flash slowly in a cycle.
  • When your Luminette® is fully charged, these 3 battery indicators stop flashing and remain lit.
  • If there is an error (battery or circuit failure), one of the indicators flashes rapidly without interruption.

The device may not be used when it is charging.

Battery life:

The battery life will depend on the intensity you choose. A correctly charged Luminette® device should lit for at least 5 sessions.

When you press the start-stop button, between 1 and 3 battery indicators light up to give you an indication of the remaining battery life (3 indicators = the battery is fully charged; 2 indicators = the battery is 2/3 charged; 1 indicator = the battery is 1/3 charged; 1 flashing indicator = the battery is insufficiently charged to be able to complete a session).

We recommend recharging your Luminette® when there is only one indicator remaining.

Switching on and off

Attention: before your first use, be sure you take off the protective film over the hologram.

Ensure that the battery is charged so that your Luminette® will work for the entire session chosen. Press the Start-Stop button briefly to turn your Luminette® on (see figure 1 ).

To change the intensity of the light, just press the Start-Stop button briefly. The intensity will change in a cycle: level 1, then level 2, level 3, and back to level 1, etc.

Luminette remains on for a set period, blink three times when the period is over and automatically shut down. To turn your Luminette® off in the middle of a session, hold down the On-Off button (for 2 seconds).

How to wear my Luminette

For the best results, you need to wear your Luminette® correctly.

To properly position your Luminette®:

  • Set the nosepiece into one of the three slots (see Figure 1). A “click” sound means that your nosepiece is correctly inserted. To take it out, pull firmly on it.
  • Place the padded part of the nosepiece where your nose and forehead meet. The lower edge of the holographic visor should be located just above your line of sight (see figure 2) when you look into a mirror. Make sure the blue light strip sits nicely across your eyes.

Please note that if you wear glasses, the nose bracket of the Luminette® should be behind your glasses (see figure 3).

Once the session has begun, keep your eyes open. Carry on with whatever you are doing. Do not look directly into the LEDs.

Find the perfect fitment : Luminette is one-size-fits-all; however, if it needs tweaking for a tighter or looser fit, bend gently the temples in or out. For an even more secure fit, insert the supplied white plastic “ear-hooks” at the end of the temples.

How to look after my Luminette

This device is meant exclusively for personal use. Between each use, store the device in its protective case in a dry place.

To clean your Luminette®, use a soft cloth moistened with a little clean water.

Be careful to protect the fragile holographic zone; avoid touching it with your fingers. If, despite everything, it gets dirty, clean with cotton wool.
