SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & TOOLS

SKILL LEVEL:
As with most things in life there is no substitute for skill and experience. It is highly recommended by BAKER DRIVETRAIN that when performing this task or any task related to the Drivetrain components on your motorcycle, that you refer to your Factory Service Manual for your specific model of bike.

SPECIAL TOOLS

  • 1 3/16” SOCKET (FOR CLUTCH NUT REMOVAL)
  • 1 ½” SOCKET (FOR COMPENSATING SPROCKET NUT)
  • TORQUE WRENCH
  • SNAP RING PLIERS

PREPARATION

DISASSEMBLY

  1. For your safety, DISCONNECT BOTH BATTERY POSTS (FAILURE TO DUE SO COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY).
  2. Remove the primary drain plug located at the bottom of your primary, drain fluid and dispose of at your local recycler.
  3. On some models, it is necessary to remove footpegs / floor boards in order to remove the outer primary.
  4. Remove the outer primary cover.
  5. Refer to your Factory Service Manual to remove your stock clutch assembly and related primary components using the proper safety precautions and tools.

  1. With Clutch assembly and primary components out of the way, remove the factory 10 tooth starter pinion (H-D P/N 31342-94). Replace the factory pinion with BAKER’S 9 tooth starter pinion (P/N SP1000) utilizing the Factory Service Manual for proper torque specifications reusing the Factory Hardware. (Fig 2)

  1. Install your new clutch assembly, primary chain, and motor sprocket components following the Factory Service Manual. (fig 3)
  2. Install the clutch nut supplied in the kit with the machined relief facing toward the clutch using “Red” Thread Lock. (fig 4)
  3. Install compensating sprocket nut using “Red” Thread Lock.
  4. Torque to Factory specifications found in your Factory Service Manual.
  5. Adjust primary chain following steps listed in your Factory Service Manual.
  6. Install clutch adjuster Key Hole Fitting and snap ring provided in kit. (WARNING ALWAYS WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION WHEN REMOVING AND INSTALLING SNAP RINGS. SLIPPAGE MAY PROPEL THE SNAP RING INTO THE AIR). (fig 5)
  7. Adjust the clutch following steps listed in your Factory Service Manual.
  8. Install outer primary and fill primary with proper fluid / amount through the derby cover opening (clutch inspection opening). Fluid recommendation and level found in your Factory Service Manual all though we have found that ATF (automatic transmission fluid / Dexron /Mercon) will provide better results.
  9. Install derby cover (clutch inspection cover) with new gasket. Torque to Factory Service Manual specifications.
  10. If floor boards or pegs were removed to install your clutch reinstall them as per Factory Service Manual.

FOR THE LIFE OF YOUR NEW BAKER STREET PERFORMANCE 9 PLATE CLUTCH CAN VERY DEPENDING ON YOUR RIDING STYLE; BETWEEN 500-3000 MILES.

Your BAKER STREET PERFOMANCE 9 PLATE CLUTCH is shipped with a .072” thick Belleville spring (motors up to 120 H.P.) installed during assembly. Depending on your riding style this spring will be all you need. For those guys who live on the edge, have huge motors, balls-out no holding back we’ve included a .093” Belleville spring (recommend for race applications only). This spring when installed will increase your torque handling capacity by 60%.
NOTE: WHEN YOU CHANGE SPRING PRESSURE YOUR LEVER EFFORT WILL ALSO INCREASE.

Refer to the exploded view in Figure 7 as a guide.

  1. Make sure the motorcycle is supported correctly on a lift or kickstand.
  2. Put the motorcycle in 1st gear (this will help when removing the pivot plate bolts).
  3. Remove the derby cover (clutch inspection cover).
  4. Loosen the clutch adjustment.
  5. Remove the clutch pivot plate bolts and remove the pivot plate.
  6. Remove the diaphragm spring from the clutch assembly.
  7. Install the .093” spring, making sure that the spring seat is installed correctly in the pressure plate behind the spring. (refer to Figure 6.)
  8. Install the pivot plate / pivot plate bolts with Red Thread Lock. Lining up the tabs with the spring.
  9. Snug all bolts down evenly in a cross pattern.
  10. Torque all the bolts in a cross pattern to 200 in. lbs.
  11. Re-adjust the clutch following the Factory Service Manual.
  12. Install the derby cover (clutch inspection cover) per Factory Service Manual with new gasket.
  13. RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT.

LIMITED WARRANTY
NOTE: Warranty card must be returned within 45 days of purchase for your warranty to be valid.
BAKER™ transmission assemblies and transmission builder ‘s kits, are guaranteed to the original purchaser to be free of manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 5 years from the date of purchase or up to 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. All other BAKER products are guaranteed to the original purchaser to be free of manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 2 years from the date of purchase or up to 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first, except for the following; Warranty does not cover clutch plate wear, throw out bearing failures or main shaft breakage due to improper clutch nut installation.
Electrical components carry a 30-day warranty; cosmetic finishes (chrome plating, hard anodizing, powder coating) are covered for 60 days. Certain promotional products may carry a shorter warranty as specified at the time of purchase. If the product is found by BAKER to be defective, such products will, at the option of BAKER, be replaced or repaired at cost to BAKER.
In the event warranty service is required, the original purchaser must call or write BAKER immediately with a description of the problem. If it is deemed necessary for BAKER to make an evaluation to determine whether the transmission assembly or transmission kit or accessory is defective, the entire transmission assembly, whether originally purchased as an assembly or kit, must be properly packaged and returned prepaid to BAKER with a copy of the original purchase invoice. If after evaluation by BAKER a defect in materials and/or workmanship is found, BAKER will, at their option, repair or replace the defective part of the assembly.

RETURNS AND EXCHANGES
Any merchandise returned for any reason (exchange, credit or modification) must be accompanied by a Return Goods Authorization (RGA) number or it will be refused. Call BAKER to obtain this number prior to returning goods for any reason. There is a 15% re-stocking fee for all returned items. BAKER is not liable for any shipping.

ADDITIONAL WARRANTY PROVISIONS
NOTE: Limited warranty does not cover labor or other costs or expenses incidental to the repair and or replacement of BAKER products.
This warranty does not apply if one or more of the following situations is judged by BAKER to be relevant: BAKER OEM transmissions ; (these are subject to the OEM manufacturers warranty only), Improper installation, accident, modification (including but not limited to use of unauthorized parts, transmission oils or lubricants), racing, high-performance application, mishandling, misapplication, neglect (including but not limited to improper maintenance), or improper repair. BAKER shall not be liable for any consequential or incidental damages arising out of or in connection with a BAKER transmission assembly, transmission kit, component or part. Consequential damages shall include without limitation, loss of use, income or profit, or losses sustained as the result of injury (including death) to any person or loss of or damage to property. BAKER transmissions, transmission kits and accessories are designed exclusively for use in American V-Twin motorcycles. BAKER shall have no warranty or liability obligation if BAKER parts are used in any other application. If it is determined that a BAKER product has been disassembled during the warranty period for any reason, this limited warranty will no longer apply unless you were instructed to do so by a BAKER Drivetrain technician for diagnostic purposes.
