Intended use:
This GARDENA Telescopic Hedge Trimmer is used to cut hedges, shrubs, and grass
coverings in private domestic gardens and allotments.
DANGER! Risk of injury! Do not use the unit to cut lawns/lawn edges, chop
up material, or make compost.**
SAFETY
If not used properly this product can be dangerous. The warnings and safety
instructions must be followed to ensure reasonable safety and efficiency in
using this product. The operator is responsible for following the warnings and
instructions in this manual and on the product. Never use the product unless
the guards provided by the manufacturer are in the correct position.
Symbols on the unit:
| Read the operator’s manual.
---|---
|
Wear safety glasses and ear protection.
| Do not let the unit
become wet with rain or other moisture. Do not leave the unit outdoors while
it is raining.
| Disconnect the main cable if the cable becomes damaged or cut.
| Risk of fatal injury due to electric shock!
Keep at least 10 m away from electricity lines.
General Power Tool Safety Warnings
WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow
the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or
serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool”
in the warnings refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery
operated (cordless) power tool.
-
Work area safety
a) Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks that may ignite dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. -
Electrical safety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adaptor plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling, or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. The use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. The use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock. -
Personal safety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tools may result in personal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. The use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards. -
Power tool uses and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate at which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits, etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation. -
Service
Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. Hedge trimmer safety warnings:
• Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the switch is off when clearing jammed material. A moment of inattention while operating the hedge trimmer may result in serious personal injury.
• Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter blade stopped. When transporting or storing the hedge trimmer always fit the cutting device cover. Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce possible personal injury from the cutter blades.
• Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the cutter blade may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Cutter blades contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.
• Keep the cable away from the cutting area. During operation, the cable may be hidden in shrubs and can be accidentally cut by the blade.
Additional Safety Recommendations
Warning! Keep toddlers away when you assemble the unit.
Small parts can be easily swallowed. There is also a risk that the polybag can
suffocate toddlers.
Work area safety
Only uses the unit in the manner and for the functions described in these
instructions. The operator or user is responsible for accidents or hazards
occurring to other people or their property.
While operation and transport pay special attention to the hazard for third
parties posed by the increased working radius when the telescopic tube is
extended.
Risk of stumbling. While operating pay attention to the cable.
Warning! When wearing hearing protection, and due to the noise produced
by the unit, the operator may not notice persons approaching.
Do not use the unit when a thunderstorm is approaching.
Do not use the unit nearby the water.
Electrical safety
The British Standards Institute recommends the use of a Residual Current
Device (R.C.D.) with a tripping current of not more than 30 mA. Check your
R.C.D. every time you use it.
Before use, examine the cable for damage, and replace it if there are signs of
damage or aging.
If the replacement of the supply cord is necessary, this has to be done by the
manufacturer or his agent in order to avoid a safety hazard.
Do not use the unit if the electric cables are damaged or worn.
Immediately disconnect from the mains electricity supply if the cable is cut,
or the insulation is damaged. Do not touch the electric cable until the
electrical supply has been disconnected.
Your electric cable must be untangled, tangled cables can overheat and reduce
the efficiency of your unit.
Always disconnect the main cable before disconnecting any plug, cable
connector, or extension cable.
Switch off, remove the plug from the mains and examine the electric supply
cable for damage or aging before winding the cable for storage. Do not repair
a damaged cable, send the unit to the next GARDENA Service Center or dealer
authorized by GARDENA.
Always wind cable carefully, avoiding kinking.
Use only on AC mains supply voltage shown on the product rating label.
Under no circumstances should an earth be connected to any part of the unit.
If the unit starts unintentionally when the mains plug is connected,
disconnect the mains at once. Contact GARDENA Service to check the unit.
Warning! This unit makes an electromagnetic field while it operates. This
field may under some conditions interfere with active or passive medical
implants. To decrease the risk of conditions that can possibly injure or kill,
we recommend persons with medical implants speak with their physician and the
medical implant manufacturer before operating.
Cables
Use only permitted extension cables as per HD 516.
→ Ask your electrical specialist.
Personal safety
Always wears suitable clothing, protective gloves, and stout shoes.
Avoid contact with the oil of the blade in particular when you react
allergically to it.
Thoroughly inspect the area where the unit is to be used and remove all wires
and other foreign objects.
All adjustments (inclining the blade head, altering the length of the
telescopic tube) have to be made with the sheath in place, and the unit must
not rest on the blade in the process.
Always hold the unit properly with both hands on both handles (A) and (B).
Before
using the unit and after any impact, check for signs of wear or damage and
repair as necessary.
Never attempt to use an incomplete unit or one with an unauthorized
modification.
Power tool use and care
Know how to stop the unit quickly in an emergency.
Never hold the unit by the guard.
Do not use the unit if the protection equipment (protection cover, quick
blade-stop) is damaged.
Do not use ladders whilst operating the unit.
