STEPS

1. Start tapping the seal in towards the crankshaft with your flat head screwdriver and small hammer. The seal should almost be touching the crankshaft. Once the seal is close enough to the crankshaft you should start seeing the inner lip of the seal. If not, continue step 1.

2. Once you see the inner lip of the seal insert your flat-head screwdriver behind the seal and slowly but carefully pull the seal out. The seal is internally reinforced with metal and is rubber coated. Make sure you remove the entire rubber oil seal and metal inners. The metal inner reinforcement is built from steel and will be magnetic. The engine cases are aluminum not magnetic. While removing the seal if you separate the metal inners for the rubber you can use a magnet to remove the metal pieces. You will be able to see the groove cut into the OD of the engine case to locate the OEM seal where the crankshaft passes through the engine case.

3. Once the seal is removed, clean and polish the crankshaft and cases of any nicks, burrs, rust, dirt or sharp edges with fine emory cloth. Clean around the cases with a towel to ensure no metal shavings or oil is left. Once clean, make sure the two small oil relief ports located to the left and to the right of the main bearing where the case halves meet and are sealed, there is no excess case sealant in those ports by running torch tip cleaners through the relief ports. These ports do have a slight dog-leg in them and are about 3/4” long completely through. These ports relieve the oil bled off the main bearing behind the seal back in the bottom end for recirculation. Failure to check and clean these ports will result in the seal to continue leaking and or pushing the seal out via hydraulics as that oil will be at the pressure of the engine oil pressure with nowhere to relieve.
   Remove the foam seal from the inner clutch cover.

4. Install the new seal inside on the crankshaft. The seal must sit flush against your cases. Although not required you may use a small amount of oil around the inside of the seal to help ease it on and over the crankshaft.

5. Install the aluminum ring around the new seal. Although not required you may use a small amount of silicone on the inner flange of the aluminum ring.
