Detailed Tying Steps – SS Cicada Fly

Cicada Fly Tying Kit

Part 1: Prepare the Cicada head and body
We use two Double Barrel foam popper bodies (XS size, Black) to form the “head” and “body” of the Cicada. The two bodies will face each other on the hook shank and be pressed together.

1 Step 1: Prepare the Cicada body
IMPORTANT:
The position of the hole for the Cicada “body” is slightly diNerent from the front Cicada “head”.
For the body, carefully drill a small hole from the rear pilot hole through to the exact middle of the front cup as illustrated. The Cicada body is now ready to be fitted to the back of the fly.

  1. Put your hook in the vise. Lay a thread base from the kink in the hook to opposite the hook barb.

  2. Tie in a short piece of orange yarn from the middle of the hook kink to opposite the barb, leaving a tag 15mm long. Tie off and cut off your thread.

  3. Fit the Cicada body onto the hook from the front, then slide it all the way to the back until is well past the hook bend as shown. (note: this creates space for you to tie-in the  wings)
Re-attach your thread at the point where the kink starts.
This is the position where you will tie-in the wings. At the kink point where your thread is tied in.

  4. Place the wings on the hook with the thick (dark) portion of the wing skeleton facing upwards.

  5. Pinch and hold the wings in place with your left thumb and finger, then make tight, strong thread wraps with your right hand. Hold the wings in place until you have made 8-10 tight thread wraps.
The wing material is slippery so it needs to be tied very tightly.

  10. Using a fluorescent orange thread, re-attach it to the hook kink and wrap a thread base to the eye of the hook. Tie-off and cut your thread.

  11. Apply superglue to the thread wraps. Carefully fit the prepared Cicada head onto the hook and push it until it meets the Cicada body. Position the two foam parts (body and head) together and hold in place with pressure for a minute or two to give the super glue a chance to dry.

  12. To finish the fly, re-attach your thread and whip finish a small thread dam between the head and the eye of the hook. It adds a nice orange “hot spot” to your fly.
