Tips and Techniques
NOTE: Here are a some basic introductory instructions for three popular appliqué methods to get you started.
- Appliqué cutting instructions and templates DO NOT have added seam allowance.
- All stems are ⅝” wide finished. Optional: use a ½” bias maker. Add seam allowance to the cutting instructions if required.
- Finger press an “X” on each appliqué background square to help center and place the design.
- For straight stems, cut strips on the straight-of-grain. For curved seams, cut strips on the bias.
- For the final pressing, lay the block wrong side up on a thick flannel or terry cloth.
- Trim completed appliqué blocks to 16½” × 16½”.
Needleturn Method
- Cut out a template, do not add seam allowance to the template.
- Trace the shape onto the fabric with a water-soluble pen, chalk, or lead pencil.
- Cut out the shape, adding at least a ¼” seam allowance.
- Pin the shape to the background and stitch along the drawn line, tucking the seam allowance under the shape as you go.
Fusible/Machine Method
- Trace the template shape onto the paper side of the fusible web. Cut around the shape, adding at least ⅛” extra around the shape.
- Adhere the fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric, and cut out the shape along the drawn line, adding at least ⅛” extra around the edges.
- Remove the paper backing. Place the shape where desired and fuse it in place. Machine-sew the edges with a zigzag, straight, or blanket stitch.
Layered Interfacing Method
- Trace the template shape onto the interfacing and cut out the shape with a ¼” seam allowance. Cut a similar shape out of the fabric. Layer the interfacing and fabric RST. Stitch on the traced line.
- Clip “V” notches in the seam allowance along curved edges.
- Cut a slit or “X” in the middle of the interfacing. Turn the applique piece right side out and press well.
