THE GOLDEN RULES FOR MAINTAINING YOUR MANE

Hair extensions aren’t difficult to look after but you will definitely need to put time and effort into your hair extensions aftercare. These ‘do’s and don’ts’ should be followed by everyone, whatever your hair extension type.

DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS WET/DAMP FOR 48 HOURS AFTER APPLICATION.

UNDER-WASHING AND OVER-WASHING:

To maintain healthy-looking hair extensions, it’s essential to find the right balance between washing too much and too little. Skip the shampoo too much and your extensions may slip due to oils. But, over-wash your extensions and they’ll start to become dry and lifeless. The solution? Give your extensions a good wash once or twice a week! This way, you can clear out any icky build up without draining them of their natural moisture. If your hair needs washing more often than your extensions, here’s a sneaky little hack: wash only the top section of your natural hair by washing forwards and clipping the extension hair back out of the way !

SLEEPING WITH WET HAIR:

Seriously girls, keep those extensions dry before hitting the hay!

Sleeping with damp hair can lead to major tangles, stickiness, frizz, matted roots, and twisted bonds. And don’t forget, wet hair is extra fragile! Rubbing and friction with your pillow while you sleep can spell trouble. So, give your hair some love and dry it thoroughly before bed. Then, using a silk hairband, tie away in two loose braids or a low pony to keep it safe and sound all night long.

DRYING YOUR HAIR:

Hair is more fragile when it is wet, so rough rubbing and wringing your wet hair to get it dry are big no-nos. Instead, try treating your extensions to a gentle pat-down with a soft microfiber towel. These are much gentler to use, they don’t tangle or snag the hair, which overall causes less breakage. Microfiber towels also reduce frizz and are more absorbent. When blow dry your hair, start with a low heat until your hair is 80% – 90% dry, then turn up the heat at the end to style as desired. Always blow dry with the air flow towards the floor, neverdry your hair upside down!

AIR DRYING YOUR HAIR

First things first, only ever air dry your kids and ends if absolutely necessary.Use a hairdryer to dry your roots fully and keep the heat on low. This will prevent either your weave from swelling and unravelling, ensure your tape adhesive doesn’t slip or become sticky, and stop moisture from lingering inside your micro or nano bead extensions for too long.

Next, run an air dry cream through your locks and comb downwards to help your cuticles stay in the right direction. And remember, only air dry during the day; never go to bed with your hair damp or wet!

FRICTION AND IMPROPER HANDLING

Due to the processing involved in creating your beautiful hair extensions, they require proper care and handling. Hair extensions can be damaged over time from excessive heat, overnight rubbing on a pillow, and rough handling during styling. To prevent this, it is recommended that you style your hair gently and avoid tugging or pulling with hot tools. Carefully brush and comb your hair, and here’s a top tip – invest in a silk pillowcase or bonnet. Silk is a frictionless material that can reduce the risk of knots, tangles and damage to your hair.

BRUSHING YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS:

Let’s talk about the art of brushing your hair extensions! It’s no simple task, it’s an essential skill to keep those locks looking top-notch!

When it comes to brushing your dry hair, it’s best to do it several times a day, especially before washing it. Start at the ends and work your way up, giving your roots some lovin’ too since they can get tangled. For the best results, go for a flexible boar bristle brush. They’re gentle detanglers and spread natural oils from your scalp to the tips, making your hair extensions moisturised and healthy.

Now, let’s talk wet hair! Take it easy with a wide-tooth comb and start detangling from the tips and work your way up. Wet hair is fragile, so you must handle with care! Take your time and be gentle to keep your hair extensions looking like a dream.

EXCESSIVE USE OF KERATIN OR PROTEIN PRODUCTS:

Going overboard with protein-packed products can be a red flag for your hair extensions. Who knew that using keratin or other protein- laden potions could be a major culprit behind dullness, brittleness, and snap-prone hair? Although these ‘bond building’ products might be a lifesaver for your natural hair, they’re a no go for hair extensions. So, swap out those protein-rich formulas for sulphate- free moisture based options that are gentle and protein-free.

OVERUSE OF HEATED STYLING TOOLS:

Those long, luscious extensions deserve to be flaunted, so we whip out the hair dryer, curling iron, and straighteners to look our best. But, here’s the thing: overusing those hot tools can really take its toll on your hair and start to cause damage and breakage. If you want to keep those extensions looking and feeling healthy, cut down on the hot tool action and use heat protection like your hair depends on it!

TIGHT HAIRSTYLES:

Yes, we all love that sleek back hairdo, but here’s the deal: when you’re rocking hair extensions, it’s time to prioritize your scalp and hair’s health. Don’t get us wrong; you can still flaunt a killer style without sacrificing your precious locks. Just keep this in mind: if your ponytail is yanking on your extensions, weave, or tapes and giving you a mini facelift, it’s time to loosen up! Save yourself the pain of tension spots and let those extension strands shine without any fear of falling out.

ELASTIC HAIR BANDS:

Avoid harsh elastic hair ties that can damage your hair.

Instead, switch to silk bands and scrunchies for a much gentler alternative.

COLOURING YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS:

Although made from real human hair and technically could be coloured, it’s best to avoid coloringas it is impossible to know the hairs history. Your hair supplier or extensionist won’t be responsible for any unwanted outcomes and in salon colouring will be at your own risk.

USING PURPLE SHAMPOO:

Of course, we all know purple shampoo is a blonde’s best friend. But the truth is, hair extensions are more sensitive and porous than our natural hair so they can be prone to staining! But, if you’re having withdrawal symptoms and are tempted to use the purple stuff, use with caution. We recommend you mix it with your regular shampoo to dilute it a little, don’t let it sit too long and don’t use too often.

PRODUCTS CONTAINING SULPHATES AND PARABENS:

Hair products including shampoo and conditioners containing Sulphates and parabens should not be used.

Your hair extensions are no longer connected to the scalp’s natural oil source which means they need all the moisture they can get! Well Sulphates and Parabens are notorious for stripping oil from hair which is a major red flag for extension wearers as this could cause hair to become brittle, tangled and prone to breakage! Don’t panic, though, there’s plenty of good quality sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners on the market that will leave your hair smooth, hydrated and shiny!

SPF SUN CREAM:

Yes, that’s right, SPF sun cream is the prime culprit for staining and discolouring hair extensions! The ingredients Avobenzone and Octocrylene are the troublemakers here. So, when you’re slathering on that SPF, make sure your hair is nowhere near that cream, even when it’s soaked into your skin! A smart move would be to tie your locks in a high bun, keeping them a safe distance away from any contact. Once you’ve rinsed off the sun cream, you can let your hair down again! Another good option is to purchase an Avobenzone-free sun cream. Even though they might be pricier, your hair extensions will be protected!

FAKE TAN AND TINTED MOISTURISER:

Did you know that fake tan and tinted moisturisers can do more than just give you a glowing complexion? They can also give your hair a touch of unexpected colour too! If you let your tan and hair come into contact, those with darker hair may notice a slight change in colour, but the staining is much more noticeable on blonde hair! So if you’re planning on rocking a bronzed body, be sure to keep your hair tucked away while the tan develops.

SAUNAS & STEAM ROOMS:

Cover your hair with a towel, bonnet, or scarf to shield your precious locks from the heat and dampness to save your extension joints becoming sticky and avoid the dreaded frizz, knots, and dryness that come with humid conditions.

UV RAYS:

It’s not just your skin that’s affected by the sun’s harmful UV rays

– your hair extensions can also be impacted. Long-term exposure to the sun can cause your extensions to lose colour and shine. To protect your hair during those long hot summer days, why not rock a hat or headscarf? And most importantly, don’t forget to apply a heat protector before going outside. For all you sunbed fans, wrap your hair in a soft towel to keep it safe while you tan!

CHLORINE AND SALT WATER:

Chlorine and salt water are a major no-no for your hair extensions! They have a knack for draining your hair of its natural oils, leaving it parched which can then result in matting, dryness, breakage, and even alter the colour of your hair extensions.

If you’re planning on taking a dip in the pool or having a splash in the sea, it’s best to keep your hair extensions secured away in a bun and dry. But, if you can’t resist the urge to dive in headfirst, here are some helpful tips that I recommend you follow: Beforehand, drench your hair with clean water, smother it with your favourite conditioner or leave-in masque, (avoiding the roots) then braid it in 1 or two sections. After your swim, rinse out the chlorine or salt water ASAP using a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.

HARD WATER:

Hard water holds a high mineral content which can dry out your hair extensions and dull your colour over time. Don’t worry though, if you have particularly hard water in your area, there are several things you can do if its causing you issues.

  1. Invest in a filtered showerhead to soften your water.
  2. Reduce the impact of hard water on your hair by lowering the water temperature when you wash your extensions.
  3. Consider a professional hard water treatment. We love Malibu Hard Water in salon treatment!
  4. Apply regular treatments to your extensions to lock in moisture and keep them healthy!
