Important Safety Instructions

Read these instructions carefully and retain them for future use. If this appliance is passed to train them then these instructions must be included.
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons including the following:

WARNING Risk of explosive gases!

  • Working in the vicinity of lead-acid batteries is dangerous.
  • Batteries generate explosive gases during normal operation. t Never smoke or allow sparks or flames in the vicinity of the battery or vehicle’s engine.

WARNING Risk of injury!
Do not use the appliance with dry cell batteries that are commonly used with home appliances. These batteries may explode and cause injury or damage to property.

WARNING: Do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
CAUTION: When working with vehicle batteries, always follow the advice from the manufacturer of the battery and in the vehicle operating manual. Never leave the appliance unattended during charging.

This appliance can be used by children aged 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be done by children without supervision.

  • If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons to avoid a hazard.
  • During charging, the battery must be placed in a well-ventilated area.
  • Never place the appliance directly above a battery being charged. Gases from the battery will corrode and damage the appliance.
  • Operate the appliance as far away from the battery as charging cables permit.
  • Never charge a frozen battery. Allow the battery to return to room temperature before charging. Refer to the Winter Charging chapter of the instruction manual for charging batteries during lower temperatures.
  • Never allow battery acid to drop onto the appliance.
  • Never touch the charging clamps together when the appliance is energized (do not short-circuit).
  • After charging, disconnect the appliance from the supply mains. Then remove the chassis connection and then the battery connection.
  • Keep children under close supervision when using the appliance in their proximity.
  • Always operate the appliance on a level, stable, clean and dry surface.
  • Do not set the appliance on flammable materials, such as carpeting, upholstery, paper, cardboard etc.
  • Never use a damaged appliance after it was dropped!
  • Disconnect the appliance from the socket-outlet and contact the retailer’s service centre for examination and repair.
  • Do not attempt to repair the appliance yourself. In case of malfunction, contact the retailer’s service centre.
  • To avoid damaging the power cord, do not squash, bend or chafe it on sharp edges. Keep the power cord and appliance away from hot surfaces and open flames.
  • Place the power cord in such a way that unintentional pulling or tripping over it is not possible.
  • Do not operate the appliance with wet hands or while standing on a wet floor. Do not touch the plug with wet hands.
  • Never reach to retrieve the appliance after it has fallen into the water. Unplug the appliance from the socket outlet first.
  • Do not open the appliance housing. Do not insert any foreign objects into the inside of the appliance.
  • Do not pull the plug out of the socket outlet by the power cord.
  • Always pull on the plug itself. Do not wrap the power cord around the appliance.
  • Connect the plug to an easily reachable socket outlet so that in case of an emergency the appliance can be unplugged immediately. Pull the plug out of the socket outlet to completely switch off and disconnect the appliance. The power plug is used as a disconnecting appliance.
  • Disconnect the plug from the socket-outlet when not in use and before cleaning.

Personal Safety

WARNING : Risk of burns!
Remove all personal metal items such as jewelry and watches when working with lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries can produce a short circuit current powerful enough to weld a ring or similar objects to metal causing severe burns.

  • Wear safety goggles and protective gloves when working with lead-acid batteries.
  • Always have someone within range or close enough to assist in case of an emergency when working near a lead­acid battery.
  • Prepare a bucket of fresh water, soap and baking soda nearby for use when battery acid comes in contact with skins or clothing. Wash immediately and seek medical attention if the condition X deteriorates.
  • Neutralize acid spills with baking soda before cleaning up.
  • Do not place metal tools or objects on the battery or appliance.

Intended Use

  • This appliance is intended for charging 6V/12V lead-acid, AGM (absorb glass mat), STD (standard wet or flooded lead-acid) and GEL batteries usually found in vehicles, motorcycles, RVs (recreational vehicles), etc.
  • This appliance can be used for preliminary detection, diagnosis or analysis of the condition of a battery.
  • This appliance is intended for private use only.
  • This appliance is intended to be used in indoor and outdoor areas, however, it is not water-proof. Keep away from rain.

Before First Use

DANGER: Risk of suffocation!
Keep any packaging materials away from children and pets – these materials are a potential source of danger, e.g. suffocation.

  • Remove all the packing materials and review all components before use.
  • Remove cord wraps and fully uncoil the cables.
  • Check the appliance for transport damages.
  • Before connecting the appliance to the power supply, set the voltage switch to the corresponding voltage in the country of residence

Operation

DANGER: Risk of explosion or fire!

  • A spark may be visible when making the connection to a battery. Do not make this connection in the presence of flammable fumes.
  • Do not use the vehicle battery in the proximity of open flames. Do not smoke when using a vehicle battery.

WARNING: Risk of injury!

  • Remove any jewellery (e.g. watch, bracelet and ring). Be careful not to short-circuit the battery with any metallic object.
  • Batteries contain corrosive materials. Should battery acid come into contact with skin or eyes, flush it with water and consult a physician.

CAUTION Risk of electric shock!

  • Take special care when working with a vehicle battery.
  • Loose connectors result in an excessive voltage drop and may result in overheated wires and melted insulation.
  • Do not start the vehicle engine during operation.

Preparation

CAUTION Risk of injury!

  • Always disconnect the (negative/-) battery terminal clamp connector first.
  • Always reconnect the (positive/+) battery terminal clamp connector first.
  • Keep metal tools away from the battery terminals.
  • When cleaning the battery terminals, be careful to keep corrosion from coming into contact with eyes and skin.

NOTICE

  • The appliance will not charge an empty battery. To charge an empty battery, a surface charge or jump is required from a working vehicle’s battery first. If unsure, seek help from a local vehicle service centre for examination or repair.
  • Removing the battery from a vehicle may be necessary for charging or to clean the battery terminals.
  • Before disconnecting the battery, ensure the vehicle’s ignition and all accessories in the vehicle are switched off, so as not to cause an arc. Always remove the (negative/-) terminal from the battery first.
  • It is recommended to study all manufacturer’s battery instructions and precautions such as removing cell caps while charging and recommended rates of charge.
  • Ensure the area around the battery is well-ventilated while the battery is being charged. Do not charge a battery while in an enclosed area.
  • Determine the correct voltage to be maintained by referring to the vehicle or battery operating manual.
  • Maintain as much distance as possible between the battery and the charging appliance.
  • When possible, use the hanging loop (H) to mount the appliance away from the battery and/or vehicle. This also helps to reduce tripping hazards during operation.

Lead-acid batteries with removable cell caps:
Follow the manufacturer’s specific charging and maintenance instructions with special attention to the safety risks.

Lead-acid batteries without cell caps (maintenance-free battery):
Follow the manufacturer’s specific charging instructions with special attention to the safety risks.

NOTICE I Never start the vehicle’s engine if the appliance or the battery are connected to the socket outlet as this can cause damage to both appliances.

Connecting the appliance (battery inside vehicle)

NOTICE

  • For more recent vehicle models, the charging points may not be located near the battery. Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s specific charging instructions before connecting and disconnecting the appliance.
  • Disconnect the charging clamps (E)/(F) only after disconnecting the power cable with plug (M) from the socket outlet.
  1. Connect the power cable with plug (M) to a suitable socket outlet (Fig. 1).
  2. The power indicator (L) and LED display (J) light up and the battery voltage indicator (N) displays the current battery voltage.
  3. Select the appropriate charging voltage for the battery.
  4. Connect the red positive clamp with cable (F) to the (positive/+) terminal of the battery (Fig. 2).
  5. Connect the black negative clamp with cable (E) to the vehicle chassis or engine block away from the battery. Do not connect the clamp to the carburettor, fuel lines, or sheet metal body parts (Fig. 3).
  6. After attaching the charging clamps (E)/(F), gently move the clamps back and forth several times to ensure there is a good connection. This helps prevent charging clamps from slipping off the battery terminals and reduces the risk of sparking.
  7. Monitor the progress of the battery and appliance when charging.
  8. Remove the charging clamps (E)/(F) when the battery is fully charged and the charging progress indicator (G) on the appliance is showing 4 bars.

Connecting the appliance (battery removed from vehicle)

NOTICE I Disconnect the charging clamps (E)/(F) only after disconnecting the power cable with plug (M) from the socket outlet.

  1. Place the battery on a flat level, stable, clean and dry surface. Do not set the battery on flammable materials, such as carpeting, upholstery, paper, cardboard etc.
  2. Connect the power cable with plug (M) to a suitable socket outlet (Fig. 4).
  3. The power indicator (L) and LED display (J) light up and the battery voltage indicator (N) displays the current battery voltage.
  4. Select the appropriate charging voltage for the battery.
  5. Connect the red positive clamp with cable (F) to the (positive/+) terminal of the battery (Fig. 5).
  6. Connect the black negative clamp with cable (E) to the (negative/-) terminal of the battery (Fig. 6).
  7. After attaching the charging clamps (E)/(F), gently move the clamps back and forth several times to ensure there is a good connection. This helps avoid charging clamps from slipping off the battery terminals and reduces the risk of sparking.
  8. Monitor the progress of the battery and appliance when charging.
  9. Remove the charging clamps (E)/(F) when the battery is fully charged and the charging progress indicator (G) on the appliance is showing 4 bars.

Disconnecting the appliance

CAUTION Risk of electric shock!
When removing the clamps, always take out the black clamp (negative/-) first, then the red clamp (positive/+). This is to avoid sparking.

  1. Disconnect the power cable with plug (M) from the socket outlet. The power indicator (L) and LED display (J) go off.
  2. Disconnect the black negative clamp with cable (E) from the (negative/-) terminal of the battery.
  3. Disconnect the red positive clamp with cable (F) from the (positive/+) terminal of the battery.
  4. Reconnect the (positive/+) battery terminal clamp connector to the (positive/+) terminal of the battery.
  5. Reconnect the (negative/-) battery terminal clamp connector to the (negative/-) terminal of the battery.

Winter charging

CAUTION Risk of injury or damage!
Do not leave the appliance constantly connected to the battery during winter as this can be dangerous and cause damage to the battery. Disconnect when the battery is fully charged.

NOTICE

  • Do not charge a frozen battery. If your vehicle’s battery is frozen, allow the battery to thaw and warm up completely before operation.
  • Once the battery has thawed, check if the battery contains any charge. If the charge is too low, the appliance will not be able to charge the battery. Refer to a local vehicle service centre for examination or repair.
  • Fully charged batteries can withstand extremely cold temperatures. It is important to maintain the vehicle’s battery during the winter to avoid the battery from freezing.
  • During winter, batteries charge less efficiently and lower temperatures prevent the battery cells from accepting a charge.
  • When using winter charging mode, the appliance can automatically adjust the voltage required for the battery so it remains fully charged even in lower temperatures.
  • This mode is particularly beneficial for AGM (absorb glass mat) batteries as they have a higher cut-off voltage by nature.

Mode selection
Press the MODE button (I) until the desired charging function is selected. Once the mode has been selected, the appliance begins charging automatically.

During the charging process, the charging progress indicator (G) flashes showing the battery status (1 – 4 bars).

It is recommended to monitor the progress of the battery and appliance when charging.

Step charging program

  • This 7-step charging program allows for optimization of battery power, overcharging and damaging the battery.
  • The appliance automatically cycles through the 7 steps when a charging mode has been selected.

Cleaning and Maintenance

WARNING Risk of electric shock!

  • To prevent electric shock, unplug the appliance before cleaning.
  • During cleaning do not immerse the appliance in water or other liquids. Never hold the appliance under running water.

Cleaning

  • To clean the appliance, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Never use corrosive detergents, wire brushes, abrasive scourers, or metal or sharp utensils to clean the appliance.

Storage
Store the appliance in its original packaging in a dry area. Keep away from children and pets.

Maintenance
Any other servicing than mentioned in this manual should be performed by a professional repair centre.

Plug fuse replacement {for UK only)
Use a flat screwdriver to open the fuse compartment cover. Remove the fuse and replace it with the same type (5 A, B51363/A). Refit the cover.
