Please read these operating instructions through completely before using your glass roof system and if it is electrically powered or controlled, read also the separate instructions that are also supplied. Please keep these instructions safe and pass them on to the new owner if you sell your glass roof system.
STOBAG glass roof systems are built according to requirements with structures of aluminum EC9, steel EC3 and glass TRLV. Load bearing capacities in accordance with SIA 261 and DIN 1055. The optional built-in shading systems are built to EN 13561:2004+A1:2008 specifications. The requirements in the standard must also be observed by specialists who assemble or install the system.

Safety warnings

  • The NYON, NYON PLUS and VETRO FINO glass roof systems are not conservatories. There is no thermal separation of aluminium profiles and glass. Build-up of moisture due to fluctuations in temperature leads to drop formation. Also when connected to all-round glazing the room is not completely sealed.
  • Proximity to an escarpment in accordance with SIA 261 6.2.2.4 is not taken into account. A load case such as snow drifts or sliding snow load were not taken into account. Should the above be a hazard to the glass roof system, snow clearance is to be arranged by the owner.
  • Loads which are hung on STOBAG glass roof systems such as hammocks, flowerpots or other weights may lead to damage or cause the system to collapse and for this reason are not allowed. STOBAG accepts no liability for such damage.
  • Depending on the optional lighting systems, lamps or transformers may emit great amounts of heat. Pay attention to the safety distances from nearby objects.
  • Emergency exits must not be blocked by a glass roof in conjunction with vertical awnings. In the event of a power failure, it must always be possible to exit the awning system. In an emergency, the vertical fabric must be cut open.
  • Danger of injury from falling
  • Stepping on the glass panels of the roof system can cause the glass to break and thus lead to a fall, resulting in serious injuries.
    • Never step on or apply heavy loads to the glass panels of the roof system.
    • Only apply loads to the aluminum rafters and ensure suitable fall protection during all work.
    • Always wear anti-slip footwear.

Dangers of working at height
Not taking appropriate care when on ladders or platforms can lead to falls and result in serious injuries.

  • Before any cleaning work on ladders and/or platforms, make sure that the floor below is suitable, even, solid, and stable.
  • Make sure that ladders and platforms are completely intact and are at the correct height for the cleaning work to be performed.
  • Do not lean over far from a raised position (ladders), turn around on the ladder, or step/climb onto facade features or window ledges.
  • Always wear anti-slip footwear.

Modifications may be made to a sun protection system or the configuration of an auto-matic system with electric power only with the agreement of STOBAG or the specialist supplier. Modifications to a sun protection system can create a dangerous situation and considerable risk of damage to people or objects.
Any dismantling or re-installation may only be made by technically qualified and trained personnel. It must be ensured that the correct brackets and fixing materials must be used for the surface on which the system is to be installed. The height the system is installed at must exclude the possibility of harming people as it is extended.
Important for electrically-powered sun protection systems! Risk of electric shock! Work on electrical components may only be carried out by qualified electricians. Examine power cables regularly for wear or other damage. The drive must never be used if the power supply cable is damaged.

Maximum permissible wind loads of the shading systems
Over-glass shading ARNEX PS8000 for: NYON, NYON PLUS and VETRO FINO
Please refer to the user instructions for the conservatory shading system.

Vertical awning VM400 for: VETRO FINO
The integrated vertical shading was designed to meet the requirements of wind resistance class 3 (see Table 1.4).
The shading may only be used up to the wind resistance class declared by the installation company. This may differ from wind resistance class 3.

General operation

  • There should be no people or obstacles in the way of the sun protection system when it is being extended or retracted.
  • Never let children operate the sun protection system or any control unit.
  • The operator must be able to see the sun protection system while operating it.
  • The sun protection system must not be used if it needs to be repaired or serviced. Any control systems installed must either be switched to manual mode or disconnected from the power supply.
  • Moving parts of the sun protection system must not be touched when it is being extended or retracted.
  • The built-in awning provides protection from the sun. It is recommended that the sun protection system be retracted immediately in the event of strong winds over 49 km / hr or rain (See also point 1.3, max. permissible wind load).
  • To prevent damage, the sun protection system should not be operated if it snows, because of the load, or is icy or frosty.
  • As far as possible, only retract the sun protection system when it is clean and dry. Try to remove any leaves and the like before retracting. Damp or wet awning covers should be fully extended to dry out as soon as possible. If this is not done, creases or other visual damage may be caused to the awning which are not covered by the guarantee.

Operation with electric drive or control system

  • We recommend to operate the sun protection systems with an electric drive, also available as an option, are controlled by a wind sensor or automatic sun-wind controller. This will greatly reduce the risk of damage caused by wind and rain.
  • If the sun protection system is retracted by the wind sensor, on some models it may not be possible to extend it again for 10 – 20 minutes during the wind blockage time.
  • It should be remembered that strong gusts of wind may occur when a storm is brewing and the wind sensor may not be able to react quickly enough.
  • If the sun protection system does not have a sun or wind sensor, it must be retracted if you leave the house for holidays, the weekend, shopping and at night.
  • Awnings with electric drive and automatic control system must be set to manual operation during the winter months. Iced-up awnings should only be extended again when the ice has melted.
  • The electric drive is fitted with a thermal protection switch and is not designed for permanent operation. If the drive overheats, because of frequent extensions and retractions, it will switch off automatically, no matter which position the awning is in. The electric drive will operate again after a cooling-off period of 10 – 45 minutes, depending on such factors as the outside temperature, power output and roller positioning.
  • Sun protection systems with electric drives cannot be retracted in a power failure, caused by a storm, for example. If you leave the house for a longer period for holidays or the weekend, we recommend setting the automatic control system to manual operation.
  • In automatic operation, the area of extension and retraction must be free of obstacles.

The sun protection system must be operated in accordance with these instructions. Other uses are improper. STOBAG cannot accept liability for damage caused by improper use.

Care and maintenance

When cleaning or servicing sun protection systems with electric drives, ensure that the power is switched off to prevent accidental extension or retraction.

  1. Glass roof cleaning
    Acids, alkalis, and abrasive cleaning agents such as scouring agents, steel wool, blades, etc., as well as solvent cleaners (benzine, thinner) are not suitable for cleaning and will damage the glass roof.
    High-pressure cleaners must also not be used for cleaning because they damage seals and cause leaks in the glass roof.
    Use as much clean water as possible to clean the glass panels. If desired, you may also add some mild detergent. Never step on the glass panel. Another option is to have the installation regularly cleaned by a STOBAG partner.

  2. Maintenance
    In principle, the mechanical parts are low-maintenance. STOBAG nevertheless recommends that the system be subjected to an annual functional check. Please contact your authorized specialist partner to arrange this.

NYON and NYON PLUS
Regular cleaning of the system and especially the water channel is recommended. This prevents clogging of the drainage system and thus overflowing of the water gutter.

VETRO FINO
The glass panes should be cleaned to remove leaves and dirt at regular intervals. This helps prevent clogging of the water drainage system.

Wind sensor maintenance
If there is a control system, the mechanical wind sensor should be checked periodically for damage from external causes and that it is functioning. Check that it turns in the wind. If it does not turn correctly, it must be checked by a STOBAG specialist supplier.

Cleaning awning covers
The acrylic covers is impregnated. If it becomes necessary, clean it as follows:
Small spots can be rubbed off with a clear rubber eraser or brushed off when dry.

If slightly dirty, the covers can be washed with diluted soap solution (5%, approx 30 °C) and a soft brush. It should then be rinsed thoroughly with clear water. It may be necessary to repeat the process. Only wind the awning in when it is completely dry.
For heavier dirt, we recommend a specially developed cover cleaner, used in accordance  with its instructions. A pressure cleaning machine should never be used.

To re-impregnate the acrylic covers, it can be treated with a special impregnation spray, such as Fabric Guard™.

General comment on awning covers

Acrylic fibre awning covers are high-performance products with high light and colour resistance and mould-inhibiting, water and dirt-resistant finish. They will provide many years of safe, comfortable protection from the sun. Despite the high level of technology applied in the manufacture of awning covers, however, the treatment of the cover produces effects that cannot be avoided. These small cosmetic defects do not affect the life or the functioning of the awning cover. These una- voidable effects are explained in the consumer information that follows:

  • Creasing (1)
    can occur during the manufacture and folding of awning covers. Especially with lighter colours, the creases can look darker when viewed against the light.
    Chalk lines are lighter stripes caused during manufacture which cannot always be avoided, even if the greatest care is taken.

  • Corrugations (2,3)
    of the seams and other stitching are caused by multiple layers of cover and varying forces created when the cover is extended or retracted. The tension created can cause waffle- like or fish-boned corrugations.

  • Lengthening of sides (4)
    Seams and stitching have a reinforcing effect but must also withstand great tension. When the cover is extended, the seams and stitching lie over and against each other, which can create pressure and tension. Seams and stitching may be pressed flat and thus extend in length. This can mean that when the cover is extended, the side seams may droop slightly.
    As a rule, this effect can occur in almost all awning covers to a greater or lesser degree. It does not, however, affect their quality or usefulness.
    Water-resistance
    Acrylic sun-protection awning covers are impregnated with a waterproofing substance and can bear short, light rainfall if the incline is at least 14°. If the rain is prolonged or heavy, awnings must be retracted to prevent damage. Awnings that have been rolled-up wet should be extended to dry out as soon as possible.

In the case of this product, the fabric lies horizontally on the glass roof. The fabric must therefore be retracted before it starts to rain to avoid puddles of water. If this happens anyway, please refer to point 4.1.

General information on cold glazing
Glass roofs are “outdoor living” products. There is no thermal separation between the aluminium profiles and the glass. Even in conjunction with all- round glazing, a completely sealed room is not created.
In extreme weather conditions, the ingress of water droplets cannot be completely ruled out.
Droplets may form under the glass roof due to condensation. These cannot be prevented with cold glazing.

Breakdowns

In the event of any faults in the glass roof or sun protection system please inform your approved STOBAG specialist. Do not use the sun protection system if it is defective or being repaired.

Water on the awning fabric
If a pool of water forms on the awning fabric of the glazed shading system, proceed as follows:

  • Do not retract the awning fabric.
  • Remove water from the fabric.
  • Then retract the awning fabric.
  • Wet, rolled up fabrics must be extended again as soon as possible to dry.

Ceasing use/disposal

If you cease to use the awning and dismantle it, ensure this is done correctly and in accordance with safety regulations.
This product was manufactured using ecologically friendly production processes.
The awning, its packaging and any accessories should be sorted for environmentally friendly recycling and/or disposed of in the approved manner.
