BEFORE YOU PAINT
-
Paint in warmer weather, at least 10°C.
This lets the tar absorb into the surface more easily. -
Check the weather forecast! Look for a period of a few days with no rain.
-
Leave the plastic cover until the surface of the pine tar paint has started to dry.
-
Untreated wood? Just start painting! The same goes for wood that has previously been treated with tar, iron vitriol or distemper–or wood that is dried out.
-
Planed wood? We recommend an extra dilution of 10–20% turpentine.
-
No priming needed! All wood surfaces only need to be cleaned of dirt and dust. Remove any algae and mildew and make sure that the wood is dry before you start painting.
-
Wood painted with distemper? Use a wire brush or a pressure washer to get rid of any flaking paint. Paint over with a similar colour.
WHEN YOU PAINT
- Use a wide brush, approximately 70–100 millimetres.
- Paint as you would with regular paint.
- Avoid applying too thick layers.
- Stir regularly. This is especially important when it comes to pine tar vitriol.
- Paint twice, if the wood has not been treated before.
AFTER YOU HAVE PAINTED
- Paint again after 5 to 10 years on sides exposed to the elements of nature.
- On less exposed sides, you can wait much longer.
- The intervals between painting grow gradually longer the more times you apply pine tar paint, since the tar strengthens and protects the previous layers.
