  • Do not use a damaged cord or plug. If the appliance is not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, return it to a service centre.
  • Do not pull or carry by cord, use the cord as a handle, close a door on the cord, or pull the cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run the appliance over the cord. Keep the cord away from heated surfaces.
  • Do not unplug by pulling on the cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.
  • Do not handle chargers, including charger plug, and charger terminals with wet hands.
  • Do not put any objects into openings. Do not use any opening blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair, and anything that may reduce airflow.
  • Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of the body away from openings and moving parts.
  • Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
  • Do not use to pick up flammable or combustible liquids, such as gasoline, or use in areas where they may be present.
  • Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes.
  • Do not use without a dust bag and/or filters in place.
  • Do not charge the unit outdoors.
  • Use only the charger supplied by the manufacturer to recharge.
  • Do not incinerate the appliance even if it is severely damaged. The batteries can explode in a fire.
  • This appliance is intended for household use only and not for commercial or industrial use.
  • Do not allow the cord to hang over the edge of a table or counter or touch hot surfaces.
  • The unit should be placed or mounted away from sinks and hot surfaces.
  • Plug the charger directly into an electrical outlet.
  • Use the charger only in a standard electrical outlet (120V/60Hz).
  • Unplug the charger from the outlet before any routine cleaning or maintenance.
  • Do not look into the air vents when the unit is switched on, as sometimes there is a possibility of small debris being discharged from the air vents, especially after cleaning / replacement of the filters as debris inside the unit can be disturbed.
  • This product includes rechargeable Li-ion batteries. Do not incinerate batteries as they will explode at high temperatures.
  • Leaks from battery cells can occur under extreme conditions. If the liquid, which is a 20‑35% solution of potassium hydroxide, gets on the skin (1) wash quickly with soap and water or (2) neutralize with a mild acid such as lemon juice or vinegar. If the liquid gets into the eyes, flush them immediately with clean water for a minimum of 10 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Additional Safety Warnings

  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off‑position before picking up or carrying the appliance. Carrying the appliance with your finger on the switch or energizing an appliance that has the switch on, invites accidents.
  • Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.
  • Use appliances only with specifically designed battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
  • When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
  • Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts the eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.
  • Do not use a battery pack or appliance that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behaviour resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury.
  • Do not expose a battery pack or appliance to fire or excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 266 °F (130 °C) may cause an explosion.
  • Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or appliance outside of the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside of the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
  • Have servicing performed by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the product is maintained.
  • Do not modify or attempt to repair the appliance or the battery pack except as indicated in the instructions for use and care.
  • Only for use with S003AQU1500015 charger.

Additional Safety Information

WARNING: Never modify the appliance or any part of it. Damage or personal injury could result.

  • Wear protective clothing and wash exposed areas with soap and water. Allowing dust to get into your mouth, and eyes, or lay on the skin may promote the absorption of harmful chemicals. Direct particles away from the face and body.
  • Air vents often cover moving parts and should be avoided. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

ASSEMBLY

WARNING: Do not attempt to modify or repair the appliance.

Wall Mounting

The product can be wall mounted, if desired, using the wall mount bracket, screws and anchors supplied. To wall mount the vac, refer to Figures B, C, D and E.

  • Figure C – Insert the charger cord into the curved slot in the wall mount bracket 9 leaving approximately 8–9 inches (203 mm – 227 mm) excess as shown.
  • Figure D – Hang the vac on the wall by placing the opening on the base of the vac over the hooks in the wall mount bracket as shown in Figure D.
  • Figure E – Insert the jack plug 11 into the charging socket.

Charging the Battery
WARNING: For use only with the supplied charger.
From the new, the rechargeable cells of the product need a minimum charge time of 16 hours to ensure full power.

  • The switch must be in the off (“O”) position, the product will not charge if it is in any other position.
  • Figures A, F – Plug the jack plug 11 of the charger 10 into the charging socket 3 of the tool. Plug the charger into any standard 120 Volt 60 Hz electrical outlet.
  • While charging, the charger may get warm; this is perfectly normal and safe. It is safe to leave the appliance connected to the charger indefinitely. The charger automatically reduces power consumption when charging is complete.

USE
Switching On and Off (Fig. G)

  • Figure G – To start, slide the On/Off switch 1 forward (i.e. “O”= Off, “I” = On).
  • To stop, slide the switch back.
  • Return the product to the charger immediately after use so that it will be ready and fully charged for the next use. Ensure that the product is fully engaged with the charger plug.

Cleaning and Emptying the Product

WARNING: Projectile/Respiratory Hazard: Never use the vac without its filter.
NOTE: The filter is reusable; do not confuse it with a disposable dust bag, and do not throw it away when the product is emptied. We recommend that you replace the filter every 6–9 months depending on frequency of use.
There are two methods of cleaning the bowl, a quick empty method and a thorough clean method.

For a Quick Empty (Fig. H, I)

  • The top of the bowl is open when the bowl is removed so that dust can be easily emptied without touching the filter.

  • To replace the dust bowl, place it back onto the handle until it “clicks” firmly into position.
  • For a more thorough cleaning, remove the bowl as described below.

For a More Thorough Cleaning (Fig. H, J)

  • NOTE: Either a bag filter 7 or a pleated filter 8 will work with these vacuums.
  • Figure H – Press the dust bowl release button 2 on the handle and remove the dust bowl.
  • Remove the filter from within the bowl.
  • Shake or lightly brush any loose dust off the filter.
  • NOTE: The brush on the nozzle can be used to remove dirt on the filter.

Bag Filter and Pre-Filter (Fig. K1, K2)

  • The bag filter and pre-filter can be separated to allow for better cleaning.
  • Twist the bag filter to separate it from the pre-filter.
  • The dust bowl 4 and filters can be washed in warm soapy water. Allow to dry before placing back into the vac.
  • If using a bag filter, twist the two pieces back together after they have fully dried.
  • Place the filter back into the bowl pressing firmly to ensure a secure fit.
  • To replace the dust bowl, place it back onto the handle until it “clicks” firmly into position.
  • IMPORTANT: Maximum dust collection will only be obtained with a clean filter and an empty dust bowl. If dust begins to fall back out of the product after it is switched off, this indicates that the bowl is full and requires emptying.
  • Wash the filters regularly using warm, soapy water and ensure that it is completely dry before using again. The cleaner the filter is, the better the product will perform.
  • The filter must be correctly in position before use.

Nozzle/Accessories (Fig. L, M)

  • Figure L – A crevice tool 6 is built into the nozzle and can be extended as shown in Figure L by pulling the extension piece until it locks into position.BLACK-DECKE-HLVA315J-Cordless-Handheld-Vacuum-FIG-12
  • To store the crevice tool 6 into the nozzle press the stopping rib 12 and then push the crevice tool 6 into the nozzle until it locks into position.
  • Figure M – A brush accessory 5 is built into the nozzle and can be flipped upwards for use.

**Scented Filter***
BEFORE FIRST USE – Remove the bag from the scented pre-filter. Reassemble per the instructions above.
When the vacuum is turned on, the plastic-scented filter will emit an aroma to freshen the air.

WARNING

  • Causes mild skin irritation.
  • Toxic to aquatic life.
  • Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
  • Dispose of contents/containers to an approved waste disposal plant.

NOTE: When the plastic-scented filter no longer lets off the aroma, it can be an indication that the filter needs to be replaced. See below for information on replacement filters.
HLVA320JS vacuums are supplied with a scented filter, though any vacuum covered in this manual can accept a scented filter.

Replacing the Filters
The filters should be replaced every 6 to 9 months and whenever worn or damaged. Replacement filters are available from your BLACK+DECKER dealer.

  • Remove the old filters as described above.
  • Fit the new filters as described above.

MAINTENANCE

  • Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the vac.
  • Never let any liquid get inside the vac; never immerse any part of the vac into a liquid.

WARNING: Make sure the vacuum is completely dry before using it.
IMPORTANT: To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, maintenance and adjustment (other than those listed in this manual) should be performed by authorized service centres or other qualified service organizations, always using identical replacement parts.

Troubleshooting

  • If the product does not work, check the following:
  • The charger was correctly plugged in for recharge. (It feels slightly warm to the touch.)
  • The charger cord is not damaged and is correctly attached.
  • The charger is plugged into a working electrical outlet.
  • The switch is in the “OFF” position when charging.

Battery Removal and Disposal
This product uses Lithium Ion rechargeable and recyclable batteries. When the batteries no longer hold a charge, they should be removed from the vacuum and recycled. They must not be incinerated or composted.
The batteries can be taken for disposal to a BLACK+DECKER Company-Owned or Authorized Service Center. Some local retailers are also participating in a national recycling program (see “RBRC® Seal”). Call your local retailer for details. If you bring the batteries to a BLACK+DECKER Company-Owned or Authorized Service Center, the Center will arrange to recycle old batteries. Or, contact your local municipality for proper disposal instructions in your city/town.
To remove the battery pack for disposal:

  1. First, before attempting to disassemble the product, turn it on and leave it on until the motor completely stops ensuring a complete discharge of the batteries.
  2. Using a hex screwdriver, remove the seven screws securing the two housing halves.
  3. Lift the housing cover away from the assembly.
  4. Detach all lead connections from a battery pack.
  5. Remove the battery pack and dispose of it as per recommended guidelines.

The charger and batteries are not serviceable. There are no serviceable parts inside the charger or battery pack.
